They need to get Paul Ryan on side, against Trump. Which perhaps he might, if they can implicate VP and bring him down at the same time, leaving the coast clear for Ryan to take the seat, which I think he's the 2nd in line for after VP, is that right?

I believe so. I don't think it would take much for him to flip - I think he already has, privately. It's just his integrity that would suffer, I suppose, but since he has already done I fair bit of flipping from side to side I guess it doesn't matter that much.

Well he could save face by being seen to be the one and only 'respectable Republican' willing to step in and save the day when POTUS & VP get impeached.

I bet he's loving this.

Ungoogleable I don't know about the enough rope scenario - all of them would be coming out of this looking and smelling distinctly dirty. The GOP is being further damaged every day Trump stays in office.
