After-school programmes do not help children's performance

Well DUH! Based on my own experience they are needed more to provide parents with young children who work some wraparound childcare that enables them to hold down a job. Something you would think would be highly desirable to keep them off Welfare & Medicaid. Hmm

MrsT2007 · 19/03/2017 15:12

Yep mortificado I agree.

I'm hoping things are happening behind the scenes though. There seems to be threads coming together now.

It's 2 months tomorrow since DT's inauguration. It feels like at least 2 years.

CaveMum · 19/03/2017 15:51

In a similar vein to Bigly's last post: www.scarymommy.com/trump-budget-director-cut-programs-feeding-kids-and-elderly/?utm_source=FB

May be reason to have some hope:

MsHoolies, feels like even more than that.

TrueBlueDem · 19/03/2017 16:08

Was just reading this article on dailykos and have a question... is the breakfast pictured a real British breakfast? I've never been to the UK (would LOVE to but no money to). Is it more like a weekend breakfast? Like here in the US a weekend breakfast would be pancakes, eggs etc... something we do w our kids once in a while but not all the time. Normally we eat oatmeal, bagels, coffee etc for breakfast. Please don't blast me for sounding ignorant lol. ;) (Btw I know the point of the article was not the pic but I can't stop looking at it lol...it looks delicious, minus the meat- I'm not a big meat eater. But otherwise the pic is making me really hungry ATM!)

MoonriseKingdom · 19/03/2017 16:15

Trueblue - that would be referred to as the 'Full English'. Definitely something for a lazy Sunday morning rather than a daily breakfast.

MrsT2007 · 19/03/2017 16:15

It's very much a treat

Mostly cereal, toast etc here most days.

Full English you get in hotels, at the pub for brunch or once every so often at home.

A bacon sarnie though may crop up at weekends here....

cozietoesie · 19/03/2017 16:17

I would disagree about the speed, illegitimate. I don't think it's glacial at all - perhaps just feels so when you're inside the news. I reckon it's closer to 'breakneck' as these things go.

catgirl1976 · 19/03/2017 16:26

"Place Marking"

cozietoesie · 19/03/2017 16:28

I've been thinking of you, catgirl.

BiglyBadgers · 19/03/2017 16:31

We have pancakes (usually English rather than American, but occasionally i make American style ones) every Saturday and DH makes bacon sandwiches or bacon and eggs every sunday. We take breakfast very seriously in this house Grin

blueskyinmarch · 19/03/2017 16:31

That's the breakfast DH and i had this morning but without the beans. Beans have no business being on a breakfast. They get their own slice of toast and are eaten at teatime! This is a TRUE FACT.

BiglyBadgers · 19/03/2017 16:37

Really, I don't think they are even trying to be credible anymore. Hmm

Bigly McBiglerson.

Yes big fry-ups are special treats, not everyday occurences. And I'm with the "no beans at breakfatst time!" crowd.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 19/03/2017 16:39

A full English or - better still - a breakfast buffet with all these items and more is the best thing about a hotel stay in the UK. In more refined establishments, it tends to be a smaller, more fancy pants version with artisan local sausages and organic eggs (never baked beans though), so a nod to tradition but less gut-busting. The photo in that article looks delish. Grin

Deejoda · 19/03/2017 16:43

I must disagree bluesky baked beans are a must! You can take away the bacon but not the beans

BiglyBadgers · 19/03/2017 16:46

What! You will never take my bacon deejoda! Shock

Way back in the 70s one of my relatives visited Canade regularly and kept the family supplied with maple syrup so, unusually for the time, my grandma regularly did pancakes and maple syrup for us for breakfast. My kids can't understand the fuss about pancake day (Shrove Tuesday, for our American posters) every year because we have pancakes & maple syrup every weekend. We even take our pancake pan with us on self-catering holidays. Grin

BiglyBadgers · 19/03/2017 16:47

Though I agree that beans are perfectly acceptable. Though as i can no longer tolerate beans or sausages there will be none on my plate.

OP posts:
BiglyBadgers · 19/03/2017 16:48

TrueBlue. I hope you have learnt a valuable lesson today about never starting a discussion about breakfast with a English person unless you have plenty of time to spare Grin

I've just noticed there's no black pudding on that "full" English breakfast. Sad I had 'white pudding' on a business trip to Edinburgh in the 90s - it was amazing, very pale sausage-based pudding with spices & dried fruits in it. The breakfast savory equivalent of novelty Wensleydale with Christmas cake in it.
