I didn't write this thread title, I'm just quoting a really intelligent and talented poster on the last Trump thread

Quite frankly I don't think you need to be a bomb or security expert to see that it's a silly rule (see my first reaction to this rule earlier in the thread).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2017 08:53

Why is it only certain carriers that have the laptop ban to the US? why are none of them American? passenger screening is done by the airport, not the carrier. Could it be perhaps some protectionism?

egosumquisum1 · 22/03/2017 08:54

The US is rapidly becoming an unfriendly place to visit for business or pleasure.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2017 08:58

Are we doing this on the basis of .US intelligence gained from the Yemen raid in .January? oh how convenient that the botched raid somehow yielded something important telegraph link

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 22/03/2017 09:38

I wondered about "fake news" and whether that had been an deliberate attempt by the Russian government to steer the country towards Brexit, in light of the information war they're waging with America.

It is very worrying that these things are still being uncovered, all the while that really important decisions about all sorts of things are being taken (supreme court judge appointment, triggering article 50 etc)

lionheart · 22/03/2017 10:56

One part of the ban was related to this, I believe:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-35513348

The passenger who died in this explosion was actually the bomber (according to The Times). The report in The Times talks about al-Qaeda and its affiliates trying to perfect a laptop device that cannot be detected by security.

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/03/2017 11:03

Was listening to Radio 4 early this morning and BBC World Service news was leading with this

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-39348265

Also, The Mail (I know, I know) has a very long piece about Louise Mensch

Lweji · 22/03/2017 11:04

So they tell people to put these things in the hold, and to go through less strict security measures? Hmm

lionheart · 22/03/2017 11:10

Something to do with timers, apparently. Luggage for the hold is more likely to be checked by sniffer dog and would need a timer (more guess-work).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2017 11:19

But why only have the States only imposed this on certain airlines? Why have the States not imposed this on all airlines from those areas? As I said before, security is done by airport workers, not related to the airlines. Wouldn't a terrorist just buy a ticket for a different airline?

MrsT2007 · 22/03/2017 11:33

Ooh the mail are misquoting there. Though that's no surprise as they employ Katie Hopkins....

MrsT2007 · 22/03/2017 11:51

This is brilliant though. I blooming love Tim Minchin

cozietoesie · 22/03/2017 11:52

Just a thought - if you have 5 minutes. Wink

Nominate a charity to receive the Trump salary

Lweji · 22/03/2017 12:03

Planned Parenthood

Lweji · 22/03/2017 12:04

would need a timer (more guess-work)

Surely you just needed to leave the laptop running, or ready to receive mobile signals.

Or maybe just a low pressure sensor... Or temperature. Not hard

Lweji · 22/03/2017 12:05

But why only have the States only imposed this on certain airlines?

Apparently US airlines don't operate from those countries.

Still, any half witted terrorist would just depart from another country. Surely.

cozietoesie · 22/03/2017 12:16

Enter it on the form then, Lweji. Who can tell, eh? Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2017 12:16

American Airlines fly to Turkey, I've not checked the rest.

PausingFlatly · 22/03/2017 12:26

Brexit benefits the Russians.

Firstly, it divides a large bloc (the EU), and divide and rule of anyone who might stand against you is always good.

Secondly, it throws the UK into paralysis, as we're currently seeing, where we can't even pay attention to our own internal legislation and issues, because everything is now about the logistics of Brexit. There's a similar though lower cost to the rest of the EU.

Thirdly, lots of dissension, and dissatisfaction and disruption in a major country... if they can't find pickings of one kind or another in that, they're not the militarised, aggressive superpower I take them for.

Lweji · 22/03/2017 12:27

Enter it on the form then, Lweji. Who can tell, eh?

I did. I'm just reporting. :)

lionheart · 22/03/2017 12:51

I don't know, Lweji. This is what it says in The Times:

'Known laptop bombs have had to be activated by the terrorist by turning the device on. In theory, a laptop bomb could be fitted with a timer and sent into the hold but there is a greater chance of discovery as hold luggage is typically checked by sniffer dogs. Also the bomber would not have control over when the device was activated other than by guessing a time--something that could render the device less effective in the event of a flight delay.'

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 22/03/2017 13:32

I have a journalist friend who arrived at Gatwick this morning to fly to Turkey only to be told she had been denied entry. She's half Turkish and lived out their for a few years so is absolutely distraught. This is second hand information as I've heard this from another friend of ours so I don't know on what grounds they refused her but it certainly has never happened before.
