To be a bit scared - strange man

ohdoadoodoo · 18/03/2017 19:15

I come home every lunch to walk my dog, and a few days ago, I noticed a man sitting in his car in my apartment block's car park. I saw him looking at me quite thoroughly, but he stayed in his car.

I went inside to get my dog, and as I was walking out through my apartment building's main doors (which are locked unless you have a key), he was conveniently standing there, and asked me if I knew where "Jessie" lived. I said no, sorry, and walked away.

About half an hour ago someone buzzes my apartment, I say "Hello?" and the man on the other end says "Jessie?". I say no, sorry, you have the wrong apartment.

Ten minutes after that, I get a knock on my door, I look through the spy hole and it's the same man.

All my lights are on so he must know that I'm home, but I didn't answer because TBH I'm home alone and don't want to answer my door to strange men.

It could be nothing but AIBU to be a bit creeped out by this? From where the man was parked, he could clearly see me go into my apartment as the building is made of glass.

I'd perhaps leave it for now and if something else happens then call 101. He's asked you face to face and he's knocked on your door. If you still cross paths with him claiming to be looking for Jessie than I would be concerned that he's using that as a decoy for something else

TaliDiNozzo · 18/03/2017 19:52

I'm not sure there's any grounds to call the police really. I take it there's no one in the other flats who has that name?

scottishdiem · 18/03/2017 19:53

How was he dressed? Suit, tie etc then probably some kind of formal private investigator/bailiff type.

Ask for ID next time. If he declines then thats when to call 101.

BettyBaggins · 18/03/2017 19:54

Take a photo of his car, reg and him. Do not answer the door. Keep an eye if he is around again, if so call police for advice.

RebootYourEngine · 18/03/2017 20:02

I wouldnt call the police just yet. If he comes back again i would phone 101.

PatMullins · 18/03/2017 20:05

Emerald how is it funny, exactly? If OP feels genuinely scared or threatened by the man, then calling someone who is in a position to help isn't that fucking out there is it?

Italiangreyhound · 18/03/2017 20:10

EmeraldScorn she has plenty of reason to call the police and ask for advice. He knows she is not Jessie and that there is no Jessie at the address because he already ranger her buzzer.

Your attitude for the OP is really unpleasant.

It is dodgey and I would call the police.

user1484578224 · 18/03/2017 20:11

if it feels wrong it is wrong. Tell police.

1horatio · 18/03/2017 20:12

Call the police.

YANBU.

1horatio · 18/03/2017 20:13

LOL at all of the posters saying "call the police" 😂😂😂😂 and for what possible reason would she phone the cops? It's someone with the wrong address, unless the OP actually is called Jessie and doesn't want to acknowledge it for whatever reason but even then there would be no cause to involve the police unless she was in witness protection! 😀😂

Not sure what's LOL about that.

PatMullins · 18/03/2017 20:15

Fucking weird sense of humour by the looks of things 1horatio

GrumpyOldBag · 18/03/2017 20:15

What BettyBaggins said.

ohdoadoodoo · 18/03/2017 20:16

Just an update. I called the police after being "approached" by him three separate times.

As I was on the phone to them he buzzed me again, so that's four times. The police have told me that they're going to send someone out ASAP.

No one called Jessie has lived here before, at least not for a long time. I've been here a few years and the name of the person who lived here before me was not called Jessie.

I really don't think he was a debt collector or bailiff - he was sitting alone in a beaten up Citroen, wearing plain clothes and there was no ID badge on him.

That's good they're coming out OP, I hope it's nothing sinister.

We're here if you need a chat in the meantime Smile

notapizzaeater · 18/03/2017 20:18

Spooky that's he's rang repeatedly .... Hope you are ok,,

1horatio · 18/03/2017 20:19

Fucking weird sense of humour by the looks of things 1horatio

Yeah. I guess I've seen too much crazy to see the humour.

The police have told me that they're going to send someone out ASAP.

Good. OP, I want you to take this very seriously. Even if the police for some reason doesn't (they should).

Can you go to a friend/family member?

Italiangreyhound · 18/03/2017 20:19

Glad they are coming out.

CheckpointCharlie2 · 18/03/2017 20:20

OK op that's pretty terrifying and I would also have called the police, let's hope they hurry the fuck up.

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 18/03/2017 20:20

The police actually said they'd be coming out for this?! Confused Blimey, most forces you'd be lucky to see anyone for a robbery let alone someone knocking on your door a few times!
I'm another saying bailiff- I don't think they do wear name badges, surely if they did that then they'd never get the person they were targeting to open the door?

user1484578224 · 18/03/2017 20:21

regarding all the LOLS for calling the police I heard a senior police person ( talking about terrorism) saying anybody with any suspicions should contact the police.

This could be for anything that even appeared slightly odd.

Happybee09 · 18/03/2017 20:21

Do you have anyone local who could come and sit with you?

Sunshineandlaughter · 18/03/2017 20:22

So glad you called the police op.

Your initiation was telling you he was odd and you were right to listen to that.

Please post back later and let us know what happened.

Can you stay somewhere else tonight and have that person come and pick you up or have someone else over?

IamRonnieBiggs · 18/03/2017 20:24

I would freak!

I think if you have lived there a while and this was the first bailiff I would. E very surprised

Can you go stay with someone?

Miserylovescompany2 · 18/03/2017 20:24

Maybe OP looks like Jessie? Whoever the bloke is he seems VERY determined. I'd be bloody freaked out if he was knocking on my door repeatedly :(

mrscrocopop · 18/03/2017 20:25

I'm so glad you called the police. Something deffo not right!
