Knicker bows

Not exactly a pressing question, but why must all grown women's basic underwear be covered in these childish little bows?

I've got no issues with a nice set of lacies, but WTF are these doing on my sensible Bridget's? AIBU? They infuriate me, and they're on bras too! Why on earth is the purpose of a bow between my boobs... on a t-shirt bra?

I use them to navigate front from back when I'm getting dressed in the dark.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 17/03/2017 19:52

Can report that today's bra has no bow, but today's knickers so have bow.

The back bit is much larger that the front so fairly easy to tell back from front surely? Or maybe that's just my arse Blush

shirleycartersaidso · 17/03/2017 19:54

I taught my kids to get their knickers the right way round by staying 'now to belly button'. Beyond that there is absolutely no reason for them to be there!

VestalVirgin · 17/03/2017 19:55

They ARE there to look pretty. Men are not smarter than women and boys are not smarter than girls.

I usually avoid them - my organic cotton undies don't have bows. But the Diary Dolls bloodproof pants have them. Perhaps it is an UK thing? But I admittedly have never bought non-organic underwear in Germany.

terrylene · 17/03/2017 19:59

It annoys me when they have a bow in the middle that is NOT IN THE MIDDLE M&S Hmm

But what is it with the underwear that not only has a bow, but a little metal medallion thing? www.marksandspencer.com/silk-and-lace-brazilian-knickers/p/p60090703?image=SD_02_T81_6340A_OI_X_EC_90&color=DARKMARINE&prevPage=plp
I had a very soft comfortable pjs from Debenhams with one on the top and the bottom that had to come off

justwanttoweeinpeace · 17/03/2017 20:03

They sell better than the ones without. So it's all bows all the time.

Cut 'em off if you don't like 'em. Can't take more than a few seconds.

I've read it's because blokes fantasies about undoing the bows. Anyway, not all basic knickers have bows, I've had some from M&S that were bow-less.

dodi1978 · 17/03/2017 20:32

I hate knicker bows (and bra bows) with a passion.

I am sure they provide employment in China, in the knicker bow factory.

WaegukSaram · 17/03/2017 20:33

I've read it's because blokes fantasies about undoing the bows.

So our knickers are basically fulfilling some male fantasy? Nice. Hmm

ZogsAnon · 17/03/2017 20:39

No, men need a big hole to identify the front of their underwear.

RosyGold · 17/03/2017 20:51

Just checked my bra - it has a wee bow AND a little crystal drop thingy...I'm amazed both are still intact after hundreds of washes - said bra WAS white, it's now a dull grey Grin

1horatio · 17/03/2017 20:55

These little bow thingies?

I do have a few knickers with real bows. Bows to actually untie... (lots of lace and and a bigg-ish bow). In this case? Sure, why not.

But such a little bow? I somehow doubt a man would be..."Oh wow. What an attractive woman. Oh,,, how nice. There's a teeeny, tiny bow."

Robinkitty · 17/03/2017 20:56

I would like a bow on my black granny pants, I can't tell which way Is the front.

CrohnicallyPregnant · 17/03/2017 21:01

Male pants/briefs/boxers do tend to be easier to tell front and back than female though.

I mean, DH has flies (opening kind, not insect kind) on his boxers, also a label in the centre back. Much easier for him to get dressed in the dark than me- my knickers don't generally have functional holes in and the label is in the side seam.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 17/03/2017 21:09

DH has flies (opening kind, not insect kind) on his boxers 😂 thank you for explaining, I actually did a double take!

Toadinthehole · 17/03/2017 21:41

What I want to know is whether you have to pay a 30% premium for the bow.

Toadinthehole · 17/03/2017 21:42

(no bows on the Toad's manly underwear)

Ecureuil · 17/03/2017 21:46

I like them, they've been very useful for teaching my 3 year old how to put her own knickers on!
(Just checked and the very basic H&M knickers im wearing don't have a bow)

OverAndAbove · 17/03/2017 21:49

None of my knickers have this on. Or my DD's. Just a plain elastic waistband works for us.

In terms of telling the front from the back, the size and shape does that...

LostMyDotBrain · 17/03/2017 21:50

Can't be for showing you which way round surely? The label is a perfectly adequate indication of that.

SeaRabbit · 17/03/2017 21:55

Oh I do agree: it is the work of a moment to snip them off, but it's the principle that gets to me.

I abhor buying nightwear - I like v. simple, no bows, preferably no lace, no flowers. But some colour (NotPink) would be nice. At the moment my nightwear is all plain white as that is all I can find it doesn't have ridiculous girly patterns and/or bows and/or ridiculous cartoon characters with "cute" expressions . Why can I find almost nothing that isn't pink and/or frilly? Why the urge to infantilise women in their night attire and underwear – unless it is really "sexy" for which read high polyester count – so risk of death by static electricity.

BillyButtfuck · 17/03/2017 22:16

I believe it was Nicky Minaj who said there's a bow on her panties because her ass is a present WinkHmm

Toadinthehole · 17/03/2017 22:16

searabbit

None of DW's bras have bows. Nor do her knickers. She wears pyjamas, generally with stripes or flowers. They don't have bows either. She is a bow-free zone, and I'm not aware that she consciously avoids them. No pink either.

I would have thought it was quite easy to avoid bows in a country like the UK where there is masses of choice.

Snotgobbler99 · 17/03/2017 23:30

You women think you've got it tough...

My M&S Y-fronts may be easier to orientate in the dark, but the 'functional' opening is useless. It's tiny and has a huge overlap - the only way you your todger could get out is if it was was 10 inches long and had an eye on the end, to find the way...

If it was a chap who designed them, I'm seriously jealous.
