Yes, minifingerz and when the little darling is 8 months old and licks the bottom of your shoes you just mix tap and boiled or go the whole hog and make the stuff cold and from the tap.

That was for your inventing of a nappy machine . .

minifingerz · 15/03/2017 09:42

pax - do you say things like that as a justification for serving undercooked chicken to your kids? Hmm

Powdered formula is not a sterile product - it's been found to contain salmonella, and other really fucking nasty bugs. You serve it to a small baby whose immune system system is immature and deprived of the immune protective factors in breastmilk which are there to compensate for this.

On top of that you have a product which is made particularly iron rich (to compensate for the fact that the iron in formula is not very bioavailable) which makes it very 'bacteria friendly' and you deliver it in a bottle which has three separate parts too it (at least) including some bits (like the gas reducing insertions) which are a challenge to clean. Add into the mix knackered parents who may be experiencing more chaos and forgetfulness than normal because they're sleep deprived, and you have a recipe for a sick baby.

There's a reason why parents of formula fed babies are much more likely to report vomiting and stomach upsets than the parents of exclusively breastfed babies, and why ff babies are more likely to get admitted to hospital with gastric upsets than exclusively breastfed babies, and it's because parents don't understand these things, as evidenced by the inappropriate comparisons made with the normal immune building diet eating behaviours you see in older babies who are already weaned onto solids.

minifingerz · 15/03/2017 09:43

'Diet eating' = 'dirt eating'

glueandstick · 15/03/2017 09:46

It's like the tommy tippee cups that are kiddy killers. Or not if you possess a brain cell and clean them properly.

minifingerz · 15/03/2017 10:17

Yup - except parents get knackered, or have shit eyesight yes mum looking at you, it was your sloppy cleaning of a feeding cup that landed dd in hospital on a drip when she was a baby or whatever. It happens. Parents can't always do things perfectly.

splendide · 15/03/2017 10:19

Pre mixed formula is better if you have the money to spend - no worries then.

Sparklingbrook · 15/03/2017 10:21

Those cartons of formula came in very handy when in a hurry.

raviolidreaming · 15/03/2017 10:48

what a faff

There is no faff at all. It makes a bottle up in about 90 seconds. Mock all you like, but my life is that little bit easier because of it.
(Just follow the cleaning instructions and there's no apparent issue)

mollyminniemo · 15/03/2017 10:53

To those doubting the use of this machine- believe me its a complete sanity saver. When your baby is screaming her/his head off in the middle of the night every second counts - to be able to feed a bottle of warm milk at the right temperature within 1 minute as opposed to at least 3/4 from a boiling kettle /water cooled down - is major!

raviolidreaming · 15/03/2017 10:58

Agreed, Molly - I bloody love it!

minifingerz · 15/03/2017 11:02

Ravioli

Have you looked at the Tommee Tippee FB page?

There are dozens of posts and pictures from mums who have found mould in their machines who swear they have cleaned and prepped their machines properly.

It just seems to me that some parents will happily ignore any information which raises concerns about a product which makes their lives easier.

Poor babies who've been drinking milk with mould spores in. Seems to be quite a few people on the TT FB page who've found mould in the pipes of their PP machines who've had babies who've been unwell. And yet there are still people who know that this is CLEARLY a risk with the machines who are happy to recommend it without doing any further digging, on the basis that their machine appears to be OK and makes bottle prep easier. Sad

londonrach · 15/03/2017 11:08

Mini...please dont put cold water in. Its about sterlizing the formule with vvv hot water, hence the kettle and the hot blast for this machine. The pp machine is a god send and does a bottle within 2 minutes to the right temp but like anything just needs cleaning which is vvvvv simple. Alot simplier than putting my washing machine on.

minifingerz · 15/03/2017 11:11

London I never said make up feeds with cold water - I said make up the feed with water just off the boil (i.e. A 'hot shot' but out of the kettle not a PP machine) and then top up with cooled boiled water after shaking.

LolaTheDarkdestroyer · 15/03/2017 11:14

It is a fucking faff.

minifingerz · 15/03/2017 11:15

london have you looked at the posts from mothers the TT Facebook page?

Or are you ignoring them because you don't want any doubt cast on a product which you find convenient?

There are loads of people who have said they cleaned and set up their machines as instructed and used the correct filters WHO HAVE STILL FOUND MOULD in the tubing.

One woman said her machine looked fine - clear tubes, no visible mould, but when she put a cotton bud into the machine it had visible mould on it when she got it out.

In other words the machine may look fine but still be unsafe.

DoingThisRight · 15/03/2017 11:16

It is a faff. What is so difficult with making up a bottle in less than a minute 😒

minifingerz · 15/03/2017 11:18

report

mollyminniemo · 15/03/2017 11:22

minifingerz difference being the prep machine has a built in filter that removes impurities from the water, so you'd need to use a water filter stored in fridge to be sure its as fresh.

raviolidreaming · 15/03/2017 11:22

minifingerz I trust myself and my own observations - and those around me - more than Facebook strangers who may say one thing whilst doing another. I looked into the Perfect Prep machines a lot after the Watchdog programme and am satisfied that, as my baby was not premature, that I am not putting them at risk.

Astoria7974 · 15/03/2017 11:23

If you clean it properly, you won't get mould. But I'm guessing an awful lot of people are too lazy to clean & probably got the prep machine because they're too lazy to do a bottle up rather than for any benefit to their babies.

JaniceBattersby · 15/03/2017 11:24

Part of the problem is that health visitors and midwives are not encouraged to talk to mothers about formula feeding. I believe the stock answer on Mumsnet when support is needed is 'read the instructions on the side of the packet.' Hmm

So things like the Perfect Prep machine and how to properly clean and sterilise bottles and dispense formula aren't discussed properly by health professionals and parents.

Don't get me wrong, I think the campaign to normalise breastfeeding has been great and I've been BFing my four children (not all at the same time) for six years now but I think that it's still important for HVs and midwives to talk about FF with parents who want to do so.

raviolidreaming · 15/03/2017 11:35

Absolutely. I was told by my midwife to introduce formula due to low supply / baby losing weight, and yet she still wouldn't offer any advice at all about what formula, how to make it up, how much to give, what bottles and so on. It was actually hugely distressing.

paxillin · 15/03/2017 12:03

pax - do you say things like that as a justification for serving undercooked chicken to your kids?

It is well known that UK tapwater is just as dangerous as undercooked chicken. FACT. Grin
