AIBU - insufferably snobby? Or me being oversensitive??

So we don't see the in laws often (hubby reasons not mine) we saw them at Christmas to do a gift exchange, lots of prezzies, needed a big bag so used a great big lidl bag - just for transporting, all presents were wrapped nicely and thoughtfully inside. So at the weekend, met up again, SIL says she has a gift for me, makes quite a thing of it. Its the LIDL bag, returned to me "as she couldn't think who it belonged to but then thought of me" The bag was returned to me in a John Lewis bag.

I should add there is history. For example If ever tea is being made at a family occasion, she will say "you like it butch don't you" meaning I like "normal tea" whereas she likes earl grey. She travels with her slippers and brings her own earl grey tea bags if she ever visits our home (I do have earl grey in - I do have some posh friends too!) I find it all very rude AIBU?

I love Earl Grey. can't function properly without it
Are you supposed to be posh to drink it?! 'Cos if you are I think I must have missed the memo somewhere as I'm common as muck. Smile

PickAChew · 12/03/2017 22:35

Do Bargain Booze have carrier bags?

MrsJayy · 12/03/2017 22:36

HA iceland bag Grin

JaneEyre70 · 12/03/2017 22:37

You have to take the John Lewis bag and raise her - return it in a boutique bag or like others have said, Harrods!! That is out and out snobbery and I'd call her out on it.

dontdipyourhairinthebeanjuice · 12/03/2017 22:44

I'm now thinking of having John Lewis bag, delivered by a chauffeur to her home and packaged in tissue paper in one of those very posh boxes with cellophane... Oh my god I'm actually trying to win this Confused

She sounds rude.

I drink Earl Grey too, but I keep a massive box of builders' tea in because many people prefer PG Tips and being a good host is about having a variety of blends in stock, including ones you don't personally like much.

The bag thing is weird. Lidl is great. I bought some Chinese flowering tea there once.

PickAChew · 12/03/2017 22:49

Thinking on, the perfect way to return the John Lewis bag would be in another Lidl bag.

See how long that can go on for!

LaurieMarlow · 12/03/2017 22:52

The bag thing is weird. Rather than specifically snobbish.

I wouldnt stress about the tea/slippers. That's acceptable.

dontdipyourhairinthebeanjuice · 12/03/2017 22:56

Thanks @lauriemarlow, I do have to keep it in perspective, that is what I came here for. It is just a bag. Glad I've got it back really, I had forgotten all about it (because I'm normal like that!)

Your SIL is hilarious! Thanks for giving me a laugh before bed Grin

birdladyfromhomealone · 12/03/2017 23:11

what does her brother think about her behaviour

AcrossthePond55 · 12/03/2017 23:11

So, can someone explain to me why Earl Grey is considered 'posh' (by some people)?

Over here it's just a flavoured tea with a 'name', like 'English Breakfast' or 'Prince of Wales'. It's not like it costs more than any other 'name' tea or is a 'rare' type of tea.

devuskums · 12/03/2017 23:19

Play at her game...return the Lidl bag in a JL bag in an Iceland bag...you did your monthly bag inventory and those just must be hers!!

WhatchaMaCalllit · 13/03/2017 12:37

PickAChew has it nailed - return the JL bag in a Lidl bag (even better if it's the one she is just after returning to you) saying what devuskums suggested - that you've done your monthly bag inventory and the JL bag must be hers.... See how long it can go on for!
You to her - JL bag inside a Lidl bag
Her to you - Lidl bag inside a JL bag
You back to her - JL bag inside a Lidl bag
and so on.....
Smile

Starlighter · 13/03/2017 12:41

Returning your Lidl bag in a John Lewis bag is definitely a dig! Return her John Lewis bag in the dodgiest bag you can find!

daisypond · 13/03/2017 12:42

I don't understand the slippers thing. Why wouldn't you take your slippers (if you wear them)? Unless you're going somewhere hot. I take mine if I'm going to stay with someone.

IamFriedSpam · 13/03/2017 12:46

Play her at her own game - next time you see her, return the JL bag to her in a Harrods one.

Definitely this!

Imamouseduh · 13/03/2017 12:48

I am picturing your MIL as Margot from the Good Life.

Allthebestnamesareused · 13/03/2017 13:23

But OP you refer to "hubby" which is just as Hyacinth Bucket too Grin

PickledCauliflower · 13/03/2017 13:30

I thought hubby was a bit 80s :)
Not snobby though?

RaspberryOverloadsOnChilli · 13/03/2017 13:39

Why do some people think Earl Grey is posh?

I like it and bought some yesterday.

From Lidl Grin

JungleInTheRumble · 13/03/2017 13:39

The only thing you can do is laugh! It's quite ridiculous and funny really.

I have my favourite mug and tea bags which I take with me to my parents house because their mugs are very small and their tea is incredibly strong so you end up with an espresso in tea form. I should just leave it all there really...that would be less weird.
