No, you don't chat. There is a message function but I hardly use it. I just use it for collecting recipes that I'll never bake home decor ideas, and what I call my 'cheer up' boards which are just collections of fluffy animals, kittens and alpacas mostly.
Just sign up! You can always cancel if you decide it's not for you...

It's not really a community. It's like a glossy magazine so you can flick through and "pin" images onto something like a designer's mood board.

It's a picture book with a message function and s lot of faff to get into. I've given up on it. You can find most of what's there using google.

It's a bit annoying that you have to sign in but I do find it really useful. It's a great way to collect and share ideas.

It's a bit buggy sometimes but a really good way of saving things I find around the web. So much better than bookmarks (I never get around to organising them and end up with an inconveniently long list).

Pinterest is an online scrapbook. You collect ideas online and pin them onto a relevant board so they are easy to find. I don't use it to chat even though I have more than 27,300 followers and hundreds of boards (can you tell I am addicted to Pinterest?)

Quite often something on Google images will take me to Pinterest and I start to have a look around and then three quarters of the screen goes black and I can't see any more if I don't sign up!

I missed that ...you can have followers on Pinterest! Wow. What do they follow you for?

You can follow a person so everything they pin shows up in your home page, like Facebook's homepage but Pinterest also show you things they think you'd like. You can choose just to follow specific boards rather than a person.
