To think I cannot have got this job so won't celebrate

I applied for a job that I wanted. Really,really wanted! With every part of me.

I made a huge effort to write a particularly stellar application form and got invited for interview the following week. It's a good job which I'm qualified to do, I just don't have much experience post qualifying.

I researched for hours upon hours.

I knew everything about the company, the role.

But when it came to the actual interview, I crumbled. I couldn't remember anything, except basic details about myy work history.

The only question I did well in was the question about a specific task that would be a large part of the job. The interviewers seemed to feel
Almost sorry for me and there wasn't any positive body language. I felt that while I got a few nods here and there

But I did relax at the end of the interview and asked some very good questions that I'd written due to my genuine interest in the company and a thorough research. They did seem interested in answering my questions and asked me if I was happy with the answers. But they asked me nothing, didn't seem interested in me at all.

So anyway, my supervisor went for the same position. The position was basically his as he has years experience in the field and he came out of the interview saying he nailed it, they loved all his answers, he knew the answer the everything. He's always really good at interviews while I have no natural ability in them.

But today, I received the phone call to say the job was mine. I'm completely and utterly floored! I have no idea why or how. My supervisor has text to say he'd already had his rejection just before I was called.

My parents have organised a big party but I just feel like they must have made a mistake. I can't have got the job. I didn't even give competent answers and I'm sure it was competency based. Could I really have got the job based on the questions I asked? The interviewers seemed completely disinterested and my interview was over in 20 minutes!

Aibu to hold off celebrating just yet, incase they've made a blunder and I've not got the job at all. I just can't believe I could have got that job, I did rubbish in the interview so want to call on Monday to check I really did get the job.

Plus, it's a highly competitive field with very strong applicants. No chance of us all being rubbish so I was the best of a bad bunch.

It's called imposter syndrome- you feel you are just waiting to be "found out". I suggest you take the job as you deserve this, and work on your self-esteem. Is there a senior role model you can confide in - a mentor of sorts?

I would disguise the call on Monday. Just asking when the job offer will end sent out (along those lines).

Honestly, I was an embarrassment in that interview. I've been rejected before after much better interviews. They can't possibly have look at me and thought 'yup, she's the one'. My interview was so lacklustre.

Don't you dare. Relax, they chose you. Believe it.

I just did really badly in the job interview and don't see how hey could have hired me based on that. None of them know me professionally or personally so that's all they know of me.

I am very good at my job, I am passionate about it and competent. Some interviews I nail. This wasn't one of them.

It doesn't mean I have low self esteem just because I can accept I didn't perform to the best of my ability for this particular interview.

It's highly unlikely they've made a mistake. they could obviously see you had what it takes and your enthusiasm in your questions at the end would have impressed them. Your supervisor sounds a bit full of himself. they will have chosen the best person for the job and that's you! good luck in your new job!

Don't worry about the interview being short. I pretty much always know if someone is going to get a job very quickly in interviews that I give. It's quite often the long ones that I find tedious and just wish would end.

The interview for my dream job was crap. They were hostile, I was stroppy. I got it. It wasn't a trick.

Let it go. They wanted you, warts and all. You must have impressed them, despite yourself.

I know someone who was in floods of tears after an interview because it had gone that badly. A week later she got the job.

They seem so....disinterested! Didn't ask me anything about my availability, training I'd be willing to go on.

It was bizarre.

Your boss might've gone in arrogant and put them off working with them

They obviously saw past the nerves, you said you answered a very relevant question well, and you showed genuine interest and enthusiasm with your questions

They saw something in you that went beyond slick interview answers.

We offered a partnership to somebody who was so nervous during the first interview they were almost incapable of striking a coherent sentence together. They still were quite clearly the best candidate at the time.

I can totally see what you mean though. To be honest - I don't celebrate the 'verbal' offer, I celebrate when I have the contract in my hand.. That is also when I resign. So I would have the party, but only once the contract had arrived!

I could have written this. Of all the jobs I have gotten, EVERY SINGLE TIME I thought I'd done appallingly. Would come home and cry for a couple of days. Beat myself up for being crap at interviews, blaming my over-powering interview anxiety. Genuinely believing I could never have gotten it.

At my last job I was told by my peers I had beaten over 150 applicants and 10 interviewee's by "miles", that they'd all decided I had the job midway through the interview. And like you I thought they'd made a mistake. On the phone, when receiving the good news, I asked if they were sure they'd called the right person! And I was edgy afterwards waiting for that call back to say "yeah, sorry, we did ring the wrong person actually". But thar call never came!

Still to this day I don't understand it. Self-doubt is a fucker!!! Trouble is, I was bullied relentlessly for a number of years, those bullies voices remain in my head every time I try to achieve anything.

Please enjoy your moment of glory. Don't ruin it for yourself. Bask in it and enjoy every damn second. CELEBRATE the shit out of this good news!!!

They weren't Interested because they were going through the motions- they already knew they wanted you. Your supervisor sounds like a prat and they saw through his confidence and didn't like what they saw.

To be honest we go off the written application mainly, and just use the interview to filter out anyone really awful/not having the ability to string a sentence together. The interview doesn't have to be good, just not bad, perhaps it's the same for this job.
