To think I cannot have got this job so won't celebrate

I applied for a job that I wanted. Really, really wanted! With every part of me.

I made a huge effort to write a particularly stellar application form and got invited for interview the following week. It's a good job which I'm qualified to do, I just don't have much experience post qualifying.

I researched for hours upon hours.

I knew everything about the company, the role.

But when it came to the actual interview, I crumbled. I couldn't remember anything, except basic details about myy work history.

The only question I did well in was the question about a specific task that would be a large part of the job. The interviewers seemed to feel
Almost sorry for me and there wasn't any positive body language. I felt that while I got a few nods here and there

But I did relax at the end of the interview and asked some very good questions that I'd written due to my genuine interest in the company and a thorough research. They did seem interested in answering my questions and asked me if I was happy with the answers. But they asked me nothing, didn't seem interested in me at all.

So anyway, my supervisor went for the same position. The position was basically his as he has years experience in the field and he came out of the interview saying he nailed it, they loved all his answers, he knew the answer the everything. He's always really good at interviews while I have no natural ability in them.

But today, I received the phone call to say the job was mine. I'm completely and utterly floored! I have no idea why or how. My supervisor has text to say he'd already had his rejection just before I was called.

My parents have organised a big party but I just feel like they must have made a mistake. I can't have got the job. I didn't even give competent answers and I'm sure it was competency based. Could I really have got the job based on the questions I asked? The interviewers seemed completely disinterested and my interview was over in 20 minutes!

Aibu to hold off celebrating just yet, incase they've made a blunder and I've not got the job at all. I just can't believe I could have got that job, I did rubbish in the interview so want to call on Monday to check I really did get the job.

I just know when I've done well at a task or not

Clearly you don't, because you did well enough to get the job Grin.

I can understand being cautious until it is all in writing though.

They already have my references :-)

You say that you are self aware and know when you have done badly, and that you "nailed" the previous interview.

Did you get that job after nailing the interview?

Because I am thinking that you are judging success or failure at interview completely differently to those who are interviewing you and you need to think about what you consider to be a good/bad interviews versus which jobs you got offers for. I dont think that you are as self aware as you think.

I came second for the interview I nailed and got very very positive feedback which said I was confident and controlled throughout and an assurance that the next job that comes up would be mine.

so I did very well!

Obviously with this interview I did well, but not in the conventional way. I don't feel I answered the questions well. But something about my interview heh must have liked.

Bear in mind at interview they are looking for lots of things, including how well you'd fit into the team. Clearly you have demonstrated your ability to do the job in your application, and they have your references (is one from the person that thinks you are gold?).

It sounds like you demonstrated interest and knowledge with your questions even if you felt your answers weren't great.

Well done, you deserve this!

Petronius16 · 12/03/2017 09:04

Don't actually get it but I think he means I don't realise my own worth.

Exactly!

Earlier you posted, I know I did badly, from where I'm sitting you think you did badly. That's quite a difference.

The job is yours go celebrate!!!! Your human and nerves aside they clearly saw your potential! Well done Wine

Well done.

If it helps, I had an interview last year and it was the worst interview I had ever had. I know it, they know it, we have talked about it - it was because the recruiter was an ex colleague at a place I had left 10 years previously...oh gosh I still cringe at it. I was spectacularly nervous - more nervous than I have ever been for an interview - ever.

There was also a 90 minute test that looked at other competencies and abilities and apparently I floored the rest of them.

I went away for a short break just waiting for the call to say Sorry and when a call came, and I was driving back from a trip out [handsfree], I nearly drove into the hedge. I said I'd call back when I got home, in 5 mins, and it gave me time to calm down a little.

I have just completed my probationary period. :)

Well done you. Whoop.

Your stellar application and the good bits of your interview added up to a win. Your preparation saved you when the nerves hit - well done.

SparklyLeprechaun · 12/03/2017 10:03

Congratulations! That was a very nice message your manager sent you.

As for why your supervisor didn't get it, it could be something as simple as they couldn't afford his compensation package, or they wanted someone more junior who would grow in the job. Regardless, well done you.

I remember getting really good feedback about my medical school interview and I thought I was a bumbling idiot! When I get really nervous I kind of dissociate and go into autopilot - but I must have done a good job of blagging it/acting co when inside I was in turmoil! I think if you have done your research and really are genuinely enthusiastic about the post it shines through despite a bit of superficial nervousness. I think we always feel we come across worse than we actually did. Your supervisor probably thought he was better than the job and this showed, hence he didn't get it. A skilled/experienced interviewer will be able to see past the nerves and hopefully really suss someone out, which they did. Congratulations! 💐
