To think I cannot have got this job so won't celebrate

I applied for a job that I wanted. Really, really wanted! With every part of me.

I made a huge effort to write a particularly stellar application form and got invited for interview the following week. It's a good job which I'm qualified to do, I just don't have much experience post qualifying.

I researched for hours upon hours.

I knew everything about the company, the role.

But when it came to the actual interview, I crumbled. I couldn't remember anything, except basic details about myy work history.

The only question I did well in was the question about a specific task that would be a large part of the job. The interviewers seemed to feel
Almost sorry for me and there wasn't any positive body language. I felt that while I got a few nods here and there

But I did relax at the end of the interview and asked some very good questions that I'd written due to my genuine interest in the company and a thorough research. They did seem interested in answering my questions and asked me if I was happy with the answers. But they asked me nothing, didn't seem interested in me at all.

So anyway, my supervisor went for the same position. The position was basically his as he has years experience in the field and he came out of the interview saying he nailed it, they loved all his answers, he knew the answer the everything. He's always really good at interviews while I have no natural ability in them.

But today, I received the phone call to say the job was mine. I'm completely and utterly floored! I have no idea why or how. My supervisor has text to say he'd already had his rejection just before I was called.

My parents have organised a big party but I just feel like they must have made a mistake. I can't have got the job. I didn't even give competent answers and I'm sure it was competency based. Could I really have got the job based on the questions I asked? The interviewers seemed completely disinterested and my interview was over in 20 minutes!

Aibu to hold off celebrating just yet, incase they've made a blunder and I've not got the job at all. I just can't believe I could have got that job, I did rubbish in the interview so want to call on Monday to check I really did get the job.

AIBU?

Well done! Definitely don't ask if you got the role but acceptable to ask when you'll receive the contract so you can plan handing in your notice once received

Headofthehive55 · 11/03/2017 21:32

I wonder sometimes it's not always on the interview. They know who they want. I've had wonderful interviews and the interviewer has given me very positive feedback at the time, but still rejected. So I don't think you can always tell.

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 11/03/2017 21:37

I know the feeling!

I failed my first year of lawschool and had to try again (you're out in the whole country if you faily anything twice. And I had to repeat all exams).

I couldn't believe it either (at first!). So.. yes, you did it!! Awesome!!!

Petronius16 · 11/03/2017 21:38

They'd decided on you beforehand, it happens. The hardest part of any job is getting it. Congratulations and get on with the job you've earned because they think you're the best.

Inertia · 11/03/2017 21:40

Look at what you did bring to the job application- you put a huge effort into writing an outstanding application, you aced the question involving the role itself, you knew exactly what was expected in the role and in the company and you had researched thoroughly enough to ask testing questions about the company and the expectations of the position.

That will show the interview panel that you work hard, you can meet the demands of the position, you are thorough, you know what to focus attention on, you're a good fit for what the company needs, and you have the ability to build up a two-way communication process. They probably see dozens of cocky gets who are full of their own self-importance, but that isn't necessarily what they want for this role.

Congratulations on your new job!

mydshines · 11/03/2017 21:48

I agree with you op. I recently after many years of unemployment I have actually got a position in the civil service. I still haven't told anyone about it as I still have to reference and garda vetting.
But OMG I got a job . I can't wait to tell everyone when I get placed but completely get you are feeling.

Wauden · 11/03/2017 21:54

Congratulations. They knew from you application form and comparing you from the supervisor and saw through any nerves.

Bettyspants · 11/03/2017 21:55

Bloody awesome! Well done!

SamanthaUnkim · 11/03/2017 21:57

If its a STEM type job, they wouldn't dare not appoint you :-)

anna1313 · 11/03/2017 22:08

Agree you have "imposter syndrome".
What a lovely post though i am very happy for you you got the job
Enjoy the celebration👏🙌

WEll done!!!!

brazilianandjapanese · 11/03/2017 22:16

I'm just self aware. I know when I've done badly. I definitely did badly.

They just went on my job application, clearly.

I'm sure others were equally qualified though.

Is it social work, by any chance?

brazilianandjapanese · 11/03/2017 22:26

Nope not social work redbull

PacificDogwod · 11/03/2017 22:34

I'm just self aware

Well, and that's another valued characteristic when it comes to hiring people.

It's just funny that men seem to have less issue with that kind of self-awareness Wink

PacificDogwod · 11/03/2017 22:36

Pay attention to your language: don't call yourself a failure, don't attribute to luck what is the result of preparation and work and being open to opportunity. Don't insult yourself and don't apologize for yourself.

From here

Just sayin' Grin

brazilianandjapanese · 11/03/2017 22:41

That was an interesting read.

I don't think it's entirely true for me. I just know when I've done well at a task or not. The interview before this I absolutely nailed! I can tell I just didn't do that well in this one.

I might have come across well personally, but my answers were rather lacking.

OP posts:
PacificDogwod · 11/03/2017 22:47

If they invited you for the interview they already knew you were qualified/could do the job and wanted to see whether you were a good fit.

I find Imposter Syndrome endlessly fascinating (and I am of course not saying you suffer from it - I don't know you Grin) - men are far more likely to apply for a job that they are NOT qualified for and feel hard done by if they don't get it or confirmed at their marvellousness if they do.
Women are more likely to be reluctant to apply for something they are ARE qualified for and underplay their achievements.

Libitina · 11/03/2017 22:49

Ask them for feedback if it's bothering you so much.

Congratulations btw Star

brazilianandjapanese · 11/03/2017 22:52

I told my managing director and he sent a text saying

'Not all gold knows it glitters.'

Don't actually get it but I think he means I don't realise my own worth.

Thanks for all the replies. Never imagined I'd get this job!

OP posts:
ChippieBeanAndHorro · 11/03/2017 22:54

All that glisters is not gold—
Often have you heard that told.
Many a man his life hath sold
But my outside to behold.
Gilded tombs do worms enfold.
Had you been as wise as bold,
Young in limbs, in judgment old,
Your answer had not been inscrolled
Fare you well. Your suit is cold—
Cold, indeed, and labor lost.

Well, apparently you're just awesome. Bask in that feeling and enjoy it :)!!

LadyCallandraDaviot · 11/03/2017 22:54

When my previous boss rang to tell me I'd got the job, I said 'really?' in a totally incredulous tone - I didn't believe it at all!!. Boss is now retired, but I'm still here 2 payrises and one promotion later!

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 11/03/2017 22:55

Well, dear old Shakespeare is always useful to quote.

At least that's what his sms made me think of.

And a Lord of the Rings poem ;)

AdoraBell · 11/03/2017 22:55

Agree. Don't call to ask if you've definitely got the job. Just accept that they chose you over the other applicants. Good luck with the job, hope it goes really well when you start. 🥂

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 11/03/2017 22:56

And yes, don't call them!!!
