AIBU?

To think that people living on welfare shouldn't be running off every five minutes for a new tattoo or piercing?

I'm probably going to get shot down for this, but I just had a little disagreement with a woman I know. She posted a photo on Facebook of a rather large tattoo on her forearm that she'd just had done. Last month she had skin divers put in her chest and hand. The month before she had another shit tattoo.
This individual is single and has two children. She hasn't worked a day in the last decade, but is living off the state. Am I being a bitch by thinking she should spend the money she receives on feeding the children and keeping a roof over their heads? I noted that she feeds her boys Pot Noodle for dinner but makes sure she's got her fags too. It just annoys me.

Maybe her kid just really likes pot noodles? Mine do. My cupboards used to look like aisle 2 in Tesco. They even liked the green ones Confused

I don't understand why some people get so angry about other people claiming benefits. Is it envy?

I see this kind of anger at people on benefits on FB - just a few weeks ago I saw several people complaining about the £500 SureStart grants only being available to those earning under a certain amount, moaning that they'd be better off if their partners left them and they quit their jobs.

I felt like replying oh OK, why don't you then? If life on benefits is such a dream. Put your money where your mouth is.

OP, if you were in the same position as this woman, you too could claim what she is. She's not being given some special treatment.

To be honest I think you need to understand that benefits are not funding a lovely lifestyle.

I had the joy of living on benefits when both DH and I were made redundant within weeks of each other

It was a fucking nightmare TBH.
IME you get enough money to survive on. To pay your rent, gas, electric, tv licence, and to eat. And that's it. So why people insist on thinking it's a lovely cushy lifestyle and people sit on their arse watching daytime tv and having tattoos I don't know.

I found it the most miserable 13 weeks of my adult life and what made it worse was the way people like the OP look down on people who are claiming what they are fucking entitled to

Her tattoos and whatever are not paid for by her benefits imvho
And she probably can't afford swimming lessons because anything non essential goes out the window

Just because a lot of people disagree with me doesn't mean I'm wrong. I'm amazed that pissing your money up the wall on tattoos is acceptable to you all. Is this the tattooed benefits claimant discussion board?
If you want to waste money get off your fat arse and earn it.

Even if you're right, it isn't your place to tell her what to do with her money (which she is entitled to) or how to feed her kids.

So OP if this woman was working 16 hours a week for minimum wage, claiming the in work benefits, housing benefit, council tax benefit etc that she's entitled to, and was still spending money on tattoos blah blah pot noodle blah swimming lesson that would be ok?

Isn't the average salary at which we all start covering the costs of the public services we use/have used in our lifetimes something like £26k?

If you're earning less than that OP, you too are being subsidised by the taxpayer.
