to warn you about Groupon?

My Groupon account was hacked a couple of weeks ago and purchases were made by the hacker to the value of £800. While the money wasn't debited from my bank account, they were marked as Pending Transactions which meant I couldn't use my debit card / withdraw any money for 12 days.

Groupon were absolutely bloody useless. Every phone call resulted in 'we understand the problem, it will all be fixed in 24 hours, we'll confirm by email'. It was never fixed. I never got the confirmation email. I asked to speak to managers, was told this wasn't possible.

Tweeted them, tweets were ignored. Sent emails / used LiveChat, was just given the standard cut-and-paste response: 'We're sorry this has happened to you. We take your security extremely seriously' etc. I was beyond frustrated.

Eventually spoke to my bank, who were amazing and so reassuring - money wouldn't leave my account, I wouldn't be charged overdraft fees etc.

The woman I spoke to in my bank's Fraud Dept told me I was the 12th person she'd spoken to that week who'd reported security issues with Groupon - yet there's been no publicity about this (that I've seen).

I'm now going through the same rigmarole trying to get my account closed (emails going unanswered, phone calls resulting in 'I can't help you right now but I'll get back to you in 24 hours') I've even written to the Managing Director, who has also ignored my email.

If you have a Groupon account - even if you haven't used it for a while, like I hadn't - keep an eye on it and on your bank account. Or better yet, close it. Maybe if they lose enough customers, they'll actually up their security measures.

Also - before you buy anything from them, Google the product first. I've found that in 99% of cases, you can get the same product for the same price or lower elsewhere. Groupon's 'deals' are very often not actually deals.

I've also found Groupon rubbish if anything goes wrong. I ordered a necklace, never received and despite contacting them about 5 times asking for a refund or another necklace and them assuring me it was done I gave up

Groupon nearly caused a business local to me to close due to them overselling a particular offer.
Rather put me off them.

Yogagirl123 · 07/03/2017 16:15

Groupon are the worst company I have ever dealt with, wouldn't touch them with a barge pole in future, poor quality products and useless customer service in my experience.

mollymaid16 · 07/03/2017 18:31

I work for a large bank and haven't heard any problems with groupon security. Ring your bank immediately if your account is at risk

SheSaidHeSaid · 07/03/2017 18:56

I've had endless issues with Groupon.

Wouldn't ever bother with them now, fed up of buying vouchers that vendors don't let you redeem as they underestimated the success of the voucher or that vendors sell as one thing which turn out to be another. Groupons customer services are awful!

Wando1986 · 07/03/2017 19:08

A company I used to work for provide their back office and customer service. I have never bought anything through them since. Never would ever again either.

oldwife · 08/03/2017 07:23

After reading this thread I thought I should close my account too.

I rarely buy anything now - and get so much spam email that one less subscription would be an improvement.

However I had the email asking for my postcode, first line of address and date of birth. Surely to close an account that I have a log in for shouldn't require my sharing this via an email ?

ShotsFired · 08/03/2017 15:27

Those of you who have made the same account closure deal with the devil I did will be pleased to know you get a "rate us" survey a day or so later. I provided detailed feedback on how crap I though their intrusive and unnecessary questioning was.

oldwife see my earlier posts in this thread - I feel exactly the same as you Angry, hence my feedback to them on their stupid survey.

Sukey
There was a programme on Irish radio where suppliers spoke of how they were 'screwed over' ( your words ) by Groupon.
