Start every frigging statement or paragraph with the word 'so' as in 'so I was doing my shopping and I stubbed my toe blah blah'.

No. Just no.

Aibu or am I the only person who gets peeved reading posts and statuses like this? It doesn't isn't sound nice reading it out in my head. Do people talk like this in real life?

prepares to get flamed heavily

Haha! I think that may be an internal rhyme issue!

In Glasgow we often say 'so it is' at the ends of sentences. It's raining cats and dogs, so it is. It's fair blowing a gale , so it is. I like that. Much better than 'so, it is very windy today.'

CocoLoco87 · 06/03/2017 21:55

Literally. I literally hate it when people use it in literally every sentence. I literally know what you mean without you having to literally explain things further.

38cody · 06/03/2017 21:56

So, it wouldn't bother me.

ThisAintALoveSong · 06/03/2017 21:56

I like 'so it is' at the end. Sounds reassuring.

I'm weird, so I am.

ps , I think frigging in the rigging is about masturbation ;)

persianprincex2 · 06/03/2017 21:57

My neighbour tortures me every morning with some gossip or family story and always greets me with "Morning, Listen......." and when i answer or tell her something she answers with "oh is that right" Yes it's bl**dy right! I wouldn't be saying otherwise! Petty? Maybe but it's been a looooong day!

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 06/03/2017 21:57

We also use to say 'it is sot' for some reason!

We should suggest this as variants to 'so'

ThisAintALoveSong · 06/03/2017 21:59

I can only remember frigging in the rigging and not a single other word in that song Blush

So is used a lot at the beginning of sentences in Ireland - especially the midlands... Fr Dougall of Fr Ted

TheFirstMrsDV · 06/03/2017 22:03

I also hate 'look' and 'listen' at the beginning of a sentence.
I think Tony Blair started it but Cameron carried it on.
It is SO RUDE.

TheFirstMrsDV · 06/03/2017 22:04

Friggin in the riggin
Friggin in the riggin
Friggin in the riggin cos theres fuck all else to do.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 06/03/2017 22:05

Australian cricketers always start sentences 'look'.It always sounds really aggressive and pissed off.

Weedsnseeds1 · 06/03/2017 22:05

That would drive me mad too *Matilda", the pencil museum is in Kewick not Godalming!

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 06/03/2017 22:06

Thanks for clearing that up Mrs

LunaMay · 06/03/2017 22:06

I agree, I think it's discusting.

ThisAintALoveSong · 06/03/2017 22:07

It is rude MrsDV. If someone said 'look' or 'listen' to me, I would probably walk away. The only person I ask to 'listen' is my 4 year old when he is deliberately playing ignorant when I'm explaining something to him.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 06/03/2017 22:08

Did you do that on purpose Luna ?

(ducks for cover)

It's just one of the many ways people use language to mask nerves or fear of rejection. There's something very non-commital or indirect about it. I notice it used the most when someone is starting a story with a backstory... the backstory starts with "So, I was..." then they tell you something to set the scene before telling you what they want to tell you. It's very American.

People need to be more direct with the way they talk.

user1486897010 · 06/03/2017 22:14

i don't see whats wrong with saying so at the start of a sentance?

boobah23 · 06/03/2017 22:14

I would say that it is a bit annoying, but other things annoy me more. Especially the Americanism where people start their sentence with "Honestly, ...". It really grates on me, and makes me think that whatever comes after that word is not going to be true at all. Angry

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 06/03/2017 22:18

Now, user , is this a wind up...?

ThisAintALoveSong · 06/03/2017 22:18

User - because it's grammatically incorrect.
