Start every frigging statement or paragraph with the word 'so' as in 'so I was doing my shopping and I stubbed my toe blah blah'.

No. Just no.

Aibu or am I the only person who gets peeved reading posts and statuses like this? It doesn't isn't sound nice reading it out in my head. Do people talk like this in real life?

prepares to get flamed heavily

OnHold · 06/03/2017 21:26

I don't like posters who write 'i'm going to get flamed for this'.

I find it a bit "look at me being all controversial'

ThisAintALoveSong · 06/03/2017 21:27

But even in an academic setting it seems logical to me that the lecturer would only use 'so' to reiterate or further explain a point they've made. and the audience will presumably be in a laboratory or lecture setting so would be privy with what is to follow. So it doesn't sound arrogant in that sense.

OnHold beat me to it.

isthistoonosy · 06/03/2017 21:27

I hate, think

DD is a tomboy, think tree climbing, nerf guns,

Bugs the hell out of me.

StealthPolarBear · 06/03/2017 21:28

It should only be used describing a consequence or follow on surely. So using it at the start of a train of thought makes no sense.
it seems to me like the response to an unspoken begging for them to tell the story.

NotInMyBackYard1 · 06/03/2017 21:28

I also cannot stand the Facebook status that begin with 'Well......'
I cringe & unfollow!

StealthPolarBear · 06/03/2017 21:29

Nosy I agree. I work in a niche field, think law.
no tell me what it is and I'll think that.

OhBlissOhJoy · 06/03/2017 21:29

I'm guilty of this Blush

ThisAintALoveSong · 06/03/2017 21:29

It is controversial to go against accepted norms. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be questioned. It also means I fully accept whole-heartedly the backlash I am going to get for daring to vent an opinion. Flaming accepted.

'No,just no"can fuck right off too

StealthPolarBear · 06/03/2017 21:30

It always used to impress. I might try to break the awful habit with the opposite.
So....yesterday I went to the supermarket, think lidl
tomorrow I plan on doing my hobby, think drinking copiously and vomiting into next door's roses

OnHold · 06/03/2017 21:31

Everyone has an opinion on MN.You are not unique.

This thread has been done several times before.

Imamouseduh · 06/03/2017 21:31

I hate it too. really annoys me.

Nairsmellsbad · 06/03/2017 21:33

It's the people who can't tell your from you're who bring me out in a rage.

murmuration · 06/03/2017 21:33

I had not noticed this at all, until I read a similar thread and realise I do it a lot (sorry!).

I think I do it sort of like a little nudge, where I'm feeling my story isn't good enough or something, but if I started it with "So..." it makes it seem like it's connected somehow and maybe somebody would read it. Doesn't really make sense written out, but I definitely don't mean it in any aggrandising way. More like a little "Um, hey, um" way. I have been editing it out when I notice, though.

MiniAlphaBravo · 06/03/2017 21:33

Agreed. Very annoying. Notice it a lot on radio 4 too, especially from scientists it seems. No idea why it is used as it is entirely superfluous as far as I can tell.

ThisAintALoveSong · 06/03/2017 21:33

Exactly what stealthpolar said. I wasn't prepared for the authors discussion but they've somehow covertly roped me into it just by the use of 'so' at the bloody beginning of their thought stream.

I don't understand it.

OP posts:
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/03/2017 21:33

I like it. Long may it continue.

SoulAccount · 06/03/2017 21:33

It irritates me when used pointlessly at the beginning of a sentence. And worse when followed by 'basically'.

Verbal litter.

StealthPolarBear · 06/03/2017 21:33

Your not rong nair

OnHold · 06/03/2017 21:34

I like so. I like posts on MN that read like a conversation.

Maudlinmaud · 06/03/2017 21:34

At the end of the day is much worse than so. It reminds me of little britain.

squishee · 06/03/2017 21:34

This again?

I agree though. It adds nothing to the message.

blackteasplease · 06/03/2017 21:34

For me it's people who can't say "he said" or "she said" but have to say "he turned round and said" "then she turned round and said" as though both people in the conversation were constantly spinning.

Often it's "so he turned round and said" come to think of it, so it combines with yours OP.

Closely followed by "he came out and said" "then she came out and said"

Could combine those as say "he came out and turned round and said" to make it even more bizarre.

ThisAintALoveSong · 06/03/2017 21:34

Saying 'can fuck right off' can fuck right off too!
