Can I have you pro's and con's please from anyone that has one or has had one? Thanks!

The fitness tracking works out of range due to GPS with the new one. The phone features won't work, obviously. It flashes up with a sign to let you know if the phone isn't in range.

iPhoneAddiction · 07/03/2017 00:39

Is there a difference between the normal watch and the sports one? Are they all waterproof?
I mainly want it to get notifications that I can glance at without it being obvious. Plus want to get back into the gym eventually and it will hopefully motivate me to keep at it to be able to view various stats.

I currently wear a garmin watch which counts my steps and tracks my sleep.

The Series 3 will be out in September, probably, so you may want to wait until then.

The Sports watch is made from aluminium so it's lighter and the finish is more matte. All of the straps are interchangeable though, so you could buy a sports one and fit a leather strap etc.

JamDonutsRule · 07/03/2017 02:10

^ and there may be a price cut to the Series 2 in late March after the Apple special event thingy happens.

Plunkette · 07/03/2017 02:30

My favourite thing is that it links to my Apple Maps sat through my car.

So I can see the sat nav in my car screen but my watch "taps" me when it's time to make the next turn.

I moved to a new city just before I got it and it's been so helpful.

The other feature that's great is that I can "ping" my phone if I can't find where I've put it.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/03/2017 02:38

I had a pebble watch for years then got an Apple Watch as a gift. It's ok but the Pebble was much better. I don't use most of the features on the Apple Watch. I find it annoying that when you get a text your phone doesn't make any noise or vibrate, though the Watch does.

iPhoneAddiction · 07/03/2017 06:37

Thanks everyone.

Last question (I think).. is series 1 and 2 okay to wear in the shower?

@Astoria7974 is bang on.

I bought one when Christmas shopping for other people. I don't think I've worn it for 3 weeks. It does everything worse than a phone or watch or Fitbit would.

I use a phone for reading brief emails and messages, my laptop for work on the go and my watch for looking nice and telling me the time. I have a garmin watch for training, riding, running.

I realised quite how much tech I was turfing out into the security basket

Yes. I travel about once a month, long haul. Last time I flew, from my carry on I had:

Kindle
iPad
iPod
iPhone (business)
iPhone (personal)
laptop
camera
portable hard drive
laptop encryption device

That was for a 3 day / 2 night trip!

Until wearable tech actually reduces the number of 'gadgets' necessary, it isn't for me.

MissSingerbrains · 07/03/2017 08:00

Only series 2 is waterproof, OP

MissSingerbrains · 07/03/2017 08:05

Another difference with the sports one AFAIK it comes with preloaded Nike running apps and stuff, which I didn't want, so I just have the normal watch.

I like it as a general fitness tracker, not just for specific workouts. It sets all sorts of daily targets to get to (not just steps) and I like that.

Astoria7974 · 07/03/2017 08:15

Agree Wentwindee. I have an iphone, blackberry, netbook, 2 laptops - am def looking for more functionality rather than an additional device.

I use my wearable (Fitbit Charge HR) to keep an eye on my daily activity levels and my heartbeat & then sync it to My Fitness Pal. Notifications of when someone calls and the ability to read messages & whatsapp is useful too. That's it. That's all I want. Got it for £100 in the sale and bought a couple of changeable straps to help accessorize it with my outfit.

IjustbelieveinMe · 07/03/2017 10:35

Can you use this in a spinning class to track heart rate and cals burnt?

ShelaghTurner · 07/03/2017 10:41

I'm a total Apple fan girl but I barely use my Apple Watch and have debated selling it on. However, this thread has reminded me why I bought it so off to charge it up and give it another shot!

BusterTheBulldog · 07/03/2017 10:56

I had a Fitbit charge, surge and blaze (all were replaced minimum of 3 times due to breaking in various ways). The Apple watch is SO much better. Much more accurate at fitness tracking than Fitbit. Plus the extras are brilliant. Love being able to pay for stuff so easily. Also great for when out horse riding -can speak via my watch. Plus the cheap straps are great for matching to outfits!

LilacSpatula · 07/03/2017 13:15

Toddlerteaplease this is because that's what your settings are set to - you can have the phone or the watch on vibrate/silent/a noise.

Redtartanshoes · 07/03/2017 16:36

I adore mine.

As a side note can someone tell me how to control music via watch. I've stumbled onto it a couple of times but can never remember how to do it

Thanks

Gudgyx · 07/03/2017 16:45

Ijust, yes you can use it to track classes. I use it 3x a week for LBT.

Got mine for Christmas, and I absolutely love it. I have the Series 2 Nike edition, it is fabulous. A few of us in the office have one, so we share data.

The Nike run app is great as well. And the rings are very motivating. Having the watch has actually motivated me to exercise again! I didn't do anything before Christmas, now I've gradually moved up to 3 LBT classes a week, 4-5 runs a week and I try my hardest everyday to close the rings, and get my award :)

Love the timer too, and getting messages etc on it. I've also found an app called littlebook, which lets you view facebook. The facebook watch app just gives you notifications, not let you actually see it, so littlebook is fab for that.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 07/03/2017 16:51

The watch doesn't need to be in range of your phone. Or at least, it didn't the other day when my friend was ten miles away! She'd left her phone at home but had her watch on and her husband answered when she rang from her watch.

I want one. I don't need one, it's totally a want Grin

xmaspost · 07/03/2017 17:25

I have the 1st generation Apple watch. I used it for a few weeks initially, but was always forgetting to charge it ... and it now sits in a drawer gathering dust. The biggest problem for me was charging on daily basis, and forgetting to do that. Also, I found I really did not need it! I believe the newer model has a few more sports features, and better battery life, so it's probably much better.

I have a series 2 and it is great. Very much a want/nice to have than a necessity but very handy for applepay, timer, swim tracker, activity tracker plus discretely being able to check messages and emails.

iPhoneAddiction · 07/03/2017 18:15

I've taken the plunge and ordered one!

Enjoy 😊

Bumply · 07/03/2017 21:17

I used to have a pebble, but it stopped charging and with Pebble selling up I decided to treat myself to a series 2 Apple Watch.
Love it.
I used the Pebble mainly as an extension to the running app I have on the phone and used to wear a chest strap for heart rate monitoring. I love having the wrist HR and being able to ditch the chest strap. I've compared the two and the only difference was when I was doing weights in the gym when it sometimes skips due to my hand being at an awkward angle.
I like not having to have the phone on an armband in the gym - the activity tracker is fine in isolation.
I like having Siri again as the microphone on my phone stopped working when the screen was replaced.

iPhoneAddiction · 08/03/2017 06:43

How easy are they to set up? It's due to arrive today!

Also where is the best place to buy a replacement strap, as I've seen some very nice ones.
