to not want people to bring their dogs to my house?

Hi there,

AIBU to dislike visitors to our house, to bring their dog with them?

We have an old dog, she's 12 now, and in her later stages of life unwell.

Twice recently we have had visitors thinking it OK to bring their dog around when they visit, Is this normal?

I would never take my dog around someone's house but wondered if it is normal?

I really dislike other dogs coming into our home

I have a dog, but would never assume he was welcome in someone else's house without permission, whether or not the person was a fellow dog owner. YANBU.

Just because someone brings a dog round doesn't automatically mean that the dog has to be allowed in your home. You are well within your rights to tell visitors to leave their dog outside somewhere secure or take them home.

There are some people that treat their dogs like babies and Visitor 1, who did this, is one of these types of dog owners.

We requested their dog stay in the garden and it was met with the same reception as if we had asked them to leave their child in the garden, or something - which made me wonder is it me being unreasonable

I adore my dog, and she has the run of the house - but that's my house. I wouldn't dream of turning up with her at someone else's house, much less expecting her to come inside!

I agree no dogs, but then I don't have outdoor shoes on in the house.

But having a dog yourself changes everything, I quite understand why people think you wouldn't mind. If you had a cat they would think twice.

Given that my house is dog-proofed but not child-proofed, it'd definitely be the child that was consigned to the garden, if someone visited me unexpectedly with both in tow .

YADNBU. I don't have a dog and I certainly wouldn't let anyone bring their dog into my home (wouldn't be happy with it in the garden either, truth be told).

Ignore any ridiculous reactions; it's your house and therefore your say, regardless of whether you have a dog of your own or not. If they don't like it, they have the choice of not visiting in future. I can't stand all that "my dogs are my babies" nonsense.

YANBU. Your house, your rules. I wouldn't let anyone bring their dog into my house or garden even if I didn't have two cats. I'd expect a visitor to ask if it was o.k. and I have no problem in politely saying no.

Not at all. I always ask if I can take my dog (it's nice to take her new places) unless it's my parents who always wonder why I don't bring her with me

I adore my dog but understand not everybody does. If someone didn't want her in their house I could quite happily leave her in the car (though admittedly my car is a doggie palace, with a big comfy cushion, blankets and water in there. I'd also give her a high-value treat like a pigs ear.)

I wouldn't be terribly happy about random dogs in my dog's home. It wouldn't have ended well. Dogs (especially older ones) need their own territory.

Unfortunately we are now getting used to life without her (after 8 years as her forever home) and random dogs would either make me cry or be dog-napped and never returned (or at least sneaked off for cuddles while I did some more crying).

We have a dog and like anyone else there are some other dogs he likes and some not. Friends that have dogs are welcome to bring theirs once we've established they get on!

We have friends like this, they have year old dog and treat it like a child. We arranged to go out to see a local band playing and arranged babysitter but the guy stayed at home because the dog doesn't like to alone in the dark. We have three cats 10 years old and they insist on bringing the dog. The last time they wanted to bring some friends over, I said not to bring the dog as it's upsetting for the cats. She replied but you can lock them away. I said and your dog will be ok with that when we bring our cats to your place. She laughed and said 'but he's different' not to us. I don't think they were happy about it but they came without the dog. Unless the animal is invited, it's rude especially so when you have your own pets. Your house. Your rules.

Yadnbu. I would not dream of taking ddog with me unless he was specifically invited ( my mum luffs him & keeps a blanket and treats at hers ).

No dogs at mine and I make no apologies for it. It's your home so it's up to you! I would stand firm and insist the dog be left in the garden or car if it happens again. I have lots of friends with dogs they adore but they would never dream of bringing the dog uninvited, it's really rude.

My Auntie and Uncle have two dogs who they treat as their babies and take everywhere. They brought them to my non doggy house and were extremely offended as I wouldn't let them bring them inside.

I wouldn't mind as a dog owner but completely get it that you do mind. I would never take my dog to another person's home without checking. Leaving him in the garden would be a bit mean, though.

I assume my dog is not welcome unless told specifically that she is. Surely that's normal?

Most of my friends and I take our dogs to each other's places, but that is because it is acceptable to us (we all compete with our dogs in shows, trials, etc) and the dogs are all socialised together. I would never show up to someone's house with my dogs without them saying 'oh, don't forget to bring the dogs'.

It would never occur to me to bring my dog to someone's house without asking first (and most of the time I don't ask as I just don't bring him end of...) It's just weird!! Maybe because you have an older chilled dog they assume it's OK? Still weird tho!
