To not want to wait to pay whilst a stallholder gives people free samples?

I probably AM BU but I need a rant.

I go to a farmers market in my town on Saturdays for some shopping. It's a good market, loads of really good stuff grown locally.

It does attract a fair amount of tourists which is fine as they must enjoy a look around.

Because I'm usually doing a fair bit of shopping, it's a bit annoying having to get past all these people who aren't buying anything but just looking.

On the honey stall, I stood there with the jar I wanted and my money for AGES whilst the stallholder basically fed these people bits of honey on wooden spatulas. Hmm They didn't even buy any!

She should have given them a taste then dealt with me if you ask me...not stood there, waiting to hear their reactions to each taste before offering another!

AIBU? I probably am. And petty. But I was knackered this morning and worried about my dog who was home with a poorly paw on his own.

In that situation I smile sweetly, put the jar back on the table and go to Tescos. It takes about 5 seconds to take payment for something and the stallholder is an idiot to keep an actual paying customer waiting.

JonesyAndTheSalad · 03/03/2017 23:47

Obsidian I would have but the honey was for DH and I promised I'd get it. It's some bloody raw unfiltered malarky that he insists on. He's at work so I would have felt mean not getting it.

Oh....then I would have waited too. How irritating though. Hope your dog is ok.

littlefrog3 · 03/03/2017 23:59

I'd have just fucked off with the jar of honey. Bet he would have been quick enough to have wanted your money then!

If he didn't notice. Tough bollocks.

SpreadYourHappiness · 04/03/2017 00:12

I suppose it depends who was there first. If they were there first, trying some honey and you just sauntered up, picked up the jar you wanted and expected the stall holder to leave them to serve you, then yes, YABU.

If, however, you were there first and they ignored you, then YANBU.

Beachedwh4le · 04/03/2017 00:16

You were U to go to the Saturday market on a Friday Grin

Butterymuffin · 04/03/2017 00:18

I'd have given it two minutes and then cleared my throat and gone 'Excuse me, I'd like to pay for this'. If stallholder didn't acknowledge you were even waiting then YANBU.

FurryLittleTwerp · 04/03/2017 00:34

Agree Buttery, I'd've done exactly that.

JonesyAndTheSalad · 04/03/2017 00:35

BEached I'm in Oz! It's already Saturday here Grin\

I should just have buggered off shouldn't I! I know they were there first but really...in the stallholder's position, I'd have handed the people their taste, then quickly taken my money...which was obviously the right money.

Twenty dollars for a pot of bloody honey!

JonesyAndTheSalad Ahh, so they were there first, then? In that case, I stand by what I said and I think YABU.

KoalaDownUnder · 04/03/2017 03:26

It irritates me when people are incapable of multitasking.

If you were clearly waiting to pay, why didn't she say 'Excuse me a sec - I'll just serve this lady while you have a taste of those ones'?

highinthesky · 04/03/2017 03:30

Jonesy - lost sales are a hard lesson in business. You have been part of the trader's education Grin

TheMaddHugger · 04/03/2017 04:18

Just take the Jar. Get the stall holder's attention, hand over the $20 hand to hand and leave.
at least that works here and i'm also Aussie

Lulooo · 04/03/2017 04:46

You had to wait a couple from minutes for the stall holder to deal with someone else and you're mad becasue you had to wait? That's life. People exist. YaBU. If you were so bothered you should have spoken up and politely asked to be served because you were in a rush. If not then forget about it and get it over it. It's such a trivial matter I can't believe you've created a thread about it.

JonesyAndTheSalad · 04/03/2017 04:52

Luloo chill out. I said I was probably being unreasonable. I can't believe you'd even bother to type a reply if you think it's so trite.

If they were there first then I think YABU. Giving out samples is her way of attracting new customers and at a stall like chat I would expect a little bit of friendly chat and for the stallholder to take a little bit of extra time with each customer. We probably have different expectations of these kind of things though.

FreeNiki · 04/03/2017 05:02

Meh. I'd just have said here's the money for this put it down and walked off.

Not stood there getting angrier by the second.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 04/03/2017 05:51

Yanbu, daft to keep a paying customer waiting to give out samples.

We have a similar market nearby and the stallholders manage to multi task, "try this one... I'll just serve this lady.... Thanks. How did that taste?"

I would have said "excuse me, can I pay?" though.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 04/03/2017 05:55

We get a lot of tourists at our local market and I think the stallholders know to keep an eye out for a paying customer, as many people just want the free samples. Surprised the honey lady hasn't figured this out yet. Lots of people won't want to hang around to buy expensive artisan honey.

elodie2000 · 04/03/2017 07:01

Eh? Just pick up a jar and wave the money under their nose of you have to - or put it down in front of them & walk away!

ollieplimsoles · 04/03/2017 07:31

Larry David?

TheProblemOfSusan · 04/03/2017 07:46

I kind of think as they were there first YABU but.... I have no patience for shit like this and would usually wait a brief minute, get annoyed and then interrupt to pay. "EXCIUSE ME can I just pay for this quickly" and then be on my way.

So we're probably both understandably unreasonable.
