To hate the phrase "giving back"

I can't articulate why, exactly. I think it's because it recognises that society isn't fair but tokens of largesse from the beneficiaries are sufficient to ensure that real change is unnecessary.

Does anyone else hate it? I'm watching fashion police on e! and the phrase was used in a self congratulatory way about an eye wateringly expensive dress. Apparently there's something praiseworthy in it?

Not watched the programme, but to me 'giving back' is used if you volunteer, as an adult or teen, for an organisation you benefited from as a child........ kind of becoming a Youth Group Leader because you had so much fun in a similar group as a child.

I don't see anything wrong in using it like that.
