DH is in the military. Warfare has changed, its no longer about "boots on the ground" or who has the biggest boat/tank/plane. It's about intelligence, unmanned drones, etc.
As DH pointed out to me, the US Naval Air Force (i.e. Just those planes/helicopters attached to the Navy) is bigger than our ENTIRE Royal Air Force.
Plus, again from DH, the US Military has long been inefficient with its manpower and training. For example, in the RAF you'd train an engineer to be able to fix all the components of an aircraft, meaning a smaller ground crew. The US military will train 1 man for the landing gear, 1 man for the wings, 1 man for the engine, etc meaning you need a huge team and that they don't understand each other's jobs.
