The major GOP players in Congress appear to have gone a bit silent, haven't they?

I'm reminded of that old 'sailor's tale' of being able to tell that a ship was in trouble because you could see the rats jumping off.

If when Trump's 'ship of state' founders on the rocks of his own ego I wonder how many will go down with him. And who will end up in the Oval Office in his place? Not Pence, I think he'll be dragged under. And so will most of his cabinet (guilt by association). That leaves Ryan, who appears to be keeping himself to himself in this latest debacle.

I think, though, that Trump will be the kind to think "if I'm going down, I'm taking as many as I can with me". I'll bet there are quite a few GOP movers and shakers quaking in their shoes and shredding documents (and the electronic equivalent) like mad.

cozietoesie · 05/03/2017 21:42

I'm inclined to disagree, Across. I think that people are very very tired and they'd probably let it go at 45 - and a chance of major House changes in 2018. The timing of all of this is critical.

saffronwblue · 05/03/2017 21:49

Dum I loved that; the fierce concentration of 45 and the proud proprietorial gaze of his minders.

originalbiglymavis · 05/03/2017 21:57

So Trump is demanding that media reveals sources. Will he make Breitbart reveal theirs (assuming there are actually sources)? I suppose he is happy to brazen out the necessity to reveal any sources if the story reflects badly on him, or doesn't follow his agenda.

He's like the fat, ugly, bullied kid at school who finally gets some power and is put to get his own back on everyone. And show how rightity right right he is.

cozietoesie · 05/03/2017 22:04

I doubt he cares whether the story was made up out of whole cloth or not. It suits him. Wink

originalbiglymavis · 05/03/2017 22:08

I don't think he really knows. That's the worrying part.

It's like my grandma when she started getting confused and would ask where granddad was (he died 20 years before). She would be adamant that they had been out for a walk that morning.

CaveMum · 05/03/2017 22:13

According to BBC News at 10, the FBI are asking the Justice Department to publicly state that Trump is wrong over the phone tapping allegations.

cozietoesie · 05/03/2017 22:15

You might be right, mavis.

originalbiglymavis · 05/03/2017 22:16

Good. I hope the can also demand on what basis he made this statement and investigate how these 'facts' are cobbled together. Then Obama sues for a bigly amount of money and gives it awat oo charities for the people/causes being clobbered by the so called president.

amispartacus · 05/03/2017 22:22

It's like my Grandma reading the Daily Express and then tweeting the headline out to everyone.

Except she isn't as influential as POTUS

Lweji · 05/03/2017 22:46

Good point, original. Could Obama sue Trump for libel? I hope he does.

UnGoogleable · 05/03/2017 22:52

Bad (sick) placemark so I'm here when the shit really, properly hits the fan. Which can't be long now eh?

AcrossthePond55 · 05/03/2017 22:57

You might be right cozie as far as 'the people' go. But I think if the GOP powers that be feel he's badly 'damaging the brand', they aren't going to chance a 'Democratic Revolution' at the midterms by hanging on to Trump's presidency at the risk of losing the majority in one or both Houses of Congress. They'll turn on him faster than a duck on a June bug! Of course, there is going to have to be a 'hyuge' and vocal defection of GOP voters, and Trump's supporters are pretty damned die hard.

cozietoesie · 05/03/2017 23:02

I'm not privy to what's happening in the House right now of course - there will be wheeling and dealing going on as is usual.

cozietoesie · 05/03/2017 23:04

Please No, Un. I'm hoping to make it through to ..........June? (Before the SHTF.)

UnGoogleable · 05/03/2017 23:10

Why June cozie?

I think Trump is salvageable, if he would just STFU, and actually start doing his job rather than pissing about playing golf. If he just kept his head down and did some actual presidenting, a lot of this would quieten down.

But he doesn't want to work hard, and he can't stop tweeting.

TheClaws · 05/03/2017 23:10

I doubt Obama will sue for libel. He has too much class. Plus the capacity to further enrage Trump supporters/fan the flames of unrest would put him off.

AcrossthePond55 · 05/03/2017 23:11

Yes, Lweji a sitting president can be sued per the Clinton v. Jones, 520 U.S. 681 (1997) Supreme Court decision. But this was for conduct prior to taking office.

Based on Nixon v Fitzgerald, though, it was ruled that a president can't be sued for "actions taken in a personal capacity" while in office. It's called 'absolute immunity'. So I guess it would hinge on whether or not his tweet regarding Obama & wiretapping would be considered an official call for investigation by the President of the United States (for which Obama could theoretically sue the Govt) or the statement of the individual, Donald Trump.

amispartacus · 05/03/2017 23:12

and he can't stop tweeting

I've said it before. Can you imagine him on AIBU?

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 05/03/2017 23:16

I suspect we're talking about different issues, Un. Wink

Why June? It's just me being hopeful, I'm afraid.

cozietoesie · 05/03/2017 23:18

It would be called 'official' for this president, I think, Across. Wink

TheClaws · 05/03/2017 23:19

More Rogue POTUS Staff tweets. I'm not quite getting the most recent one.

Rogue POTUS Staff @RoguePOTUSStaff 22mins

Seems to be LITERALLY using wire tap lies (KNOWING it makes him look worse) as substitute for hurting media in revenge for negative coverage

Rogue POTUS Staff@RoguePOTUSStaff 30m30 minutes ago

We're not making light of anything. POTUS seems actually traumatized by recent spate of Russiagate coverage. He can't cope right now.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 05/03/2017 23:20

Yeah, I struggled with that one Claws

cozietoesie · 05/03/2017 23:23

Without acknowledging that that account is genuine......

He's been trying to hurt the media and they're not calling 'Keys' yet. In fact they're not even bleeding enough. So .........flailing around for an alternate opponent?

Gingernaut · 05/03/2017 23:27

It's odd.

It's as if he's seen all the critical press coverage of how the previous incumbents have wasted tax dollars on trips and vacations and actually believed it all.

Now he's doing what he thought all the previous presidents did and he's being blasted for it. More so than the previous incumbents.

It's as if the right wing press has been lying about how lazy previous presidents have been all this time.

They have actually been working? Really?
