To use the small Nutella jars as drinking glasses?

I've got loads, my friend thinks I'm a cheapskate says she always chucks hers in the recycling.

I thought that was the point of them?

I use them for mixing salad dressing in. I also have a mustard one, Maille?, that has a stem but would be far too small for me to drink a reasonable amount of wine from.

Sgtmajormummy · 02/03/2017 13:49

I certainly do- the younger kids on playdates have them to see whose is whose and nobody gets upset when they break. I also keep the tops (not dishwasher safe BTW) and use them as storage for leftovers.

I've also sent 10 Lidl "glasses" from their posh desserts to University digs with DS.

Well, why not?

PointxTaken · 02/03/2017 13:51

that's the whole point of them Confused

I thought the only reason people bought the smaller jars (more expensive) was to have a glass once it's finished.

I only use the big jars for nails etc in the shed, it's boring.

Sgtmajormummy · 02/03/2017 13:59

Talking about jar hacks, I took a larger (ahem) Nutella jar, temporarily stuck a piece of my kitchen oilcloth inside as a guide and decorated the jar to match using glass paints.
It's now my sugar jar and I'm very proud of itGrin especially as I'm not a crafter by nature.

Just think how many jars you could save from the recycling bin that way!

SquidMother · 02/03/2017 14:00

Don't they smash differently to real glasses?

I stopped reusing Gu jars after one smashed into a trillion shards (real ramekins break into 2/3 neat pieces IME).

Sgtmajormummy · 02/03/2017 14:05

I buy the smaller jars as a damage limitation exercise.
No restraint (x4) if there's Nutella in the house.

Socksey · 02/03/2017 14:09

All my drinking glasses are old Nutella jars... I thought that's what they were for.

Gurvir0817 · 02/03/2017 14:10

This is such a great idea Halo

megletthesecond · 02/03/2017 14:10

Yanbu.

I use mine for overnight oats.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 02/03/2017 14:11

We use them as drinking glasses and have loads of them. I was a bit annoyed when the changed the design go though! Why would anyone throw them away? They are great for breakfast orange juice and also for when you need a small glass of water to take a headache pill.

Kiroro · 02/03/2017 14:11

That is the point of them

glitterazi · 02/03/2017 14:12

YADNBU. They're perfect drinking glasses! Your friend's bonkers.

BeachysSnowyWellieBoots · 02/03/2017 14:14

We call them 'glasses of shame' Blush

MollyHuaCha · 02/03/2017 14:14

Isn't that what they are made for? It's proper recycling. Well done Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 02/03/2017 14:20

Don't they smash differently to real glasses?

They're tougher than normal glasses - can't remember when I last had one break rather than bounce.

I find the lids ok in the dishwasher but mine has one of those top cutlery shelves which I guess is less harsh.

fluffiphlox · 02/03/2017 14:23

If these are like the mustard jars you get In France then they ARE tumblers. (Have not RTFT so I'm probably contestant 102).

badtime · 02/03/2017 14:25

I have seen this come up a few times on AIBU and I am always astonished that people haven't realised that they are designed as glasses (that is why they have that sort of cap), and also that anyone would pay the horrendous mark-up you pay on the small jars of Nutella because you get a glass included in the price and then not use the glass !!

WaitrosePigeon · 02/03/2017 14:25

That is such a good idea!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 02/03/2017 14:28

yes I do that and I re-use the Gu pudding containers for puddings, serving yogurt, nuts, salsa etc. it is nuts not to do this...

FourKidsNotCrazyYet · 02/03/2017 14:34

That's why they're like that is t it? They show that on German TV (or at least they did). We have them as breakfast juice glasses Smile

Igneococcus · 02/03/2017 14:42

When I was little (I'm 51, so that is a while ago), Nutella jars came with handles, they looked like miniature versions of the large German beer glasses. I think my mum still has one at home. Maybe that was only in Germany though.

Freshprincess · 02/03/2017 14:46

I've got loads, they're the perfect size for breakfast juice. They are extra tough though, they bounce off my kitchen floor.

blackheartsgirl · 02/03/2017 14:47

They get used here too, never thought of keeping the lids though, that's a great idea

Viserion · 02/03/2017 14:48

igneococcus not just Germany. My mum still has several like that from the UK.
