To be irritated by kids dressing up as Buzz Lightyear on World Book Day?

It's World Book Day. Children are invited to go to school as their favourite book character. Why oh why is Facebook full of photos of little darlings dressed as Buzz Lightyear & various Disney Princesses?!
For some reason it really makes my teeth itch! GrinGrinGrin

I nearly sent mine in a Las Vegas visor for 'fear and loathing in Las Vegas' but thought better if it :)

natwebb79 · 02/03/2017 14:28

This is why I love my son's teacher. They read them a book about a boy in his pyjamas do the whole class have got to dress as 'Herb' and just go on pyjmas too. I bloody love her.

MiladyThesaurus · 02/03/2017 14:29

I think DS's headteacher would probably find that note hilarious.

He's a hobbit today, so I'd presumably need to send him with several large packed lunches if I was trying to be authentic.

kierenthecommunity · 02/03/2017 14:30

My YR boy loves the Mr Men, all of them. I may have just been reading Mr Bump a bit more than usual to try and convince him that's his favourite, as it's the only one I reckon I could have a stab at and be recognisable Wink

So he's wearing a long sleeved blue tshirt, blue jogging pants with bandages from the poundshop wrapped around the hem and his dad's running hat. Believe me, it looks as piss poor as it sounds Grin

I only wish we had dressing up clothes we could have used but he's not really into any characters yet

Some pertinent advice from the 'Institute of Studies' in the Daily Mash: "worry about something else".

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 02/03/2017 14:40

Our school has told parents to just dress kids in PJs for book day as they know everyone will have a pair for their kids. Not one parent I know is upset by this, in fact everyone is thrilled they don't have to get up at the arse crack of dawn to do face painting and spend a fortune on an outfit!

Sleepyblueocean · 02/03/2017 14:40

Mine was stickman. I think an authentic packed lunch would be a struggle there.

bumsexatthebingo · 02/03/2017 14:46

Got to be The Hungry Caterpillar for the packed lunch. 1 lollipop, 1 piece of Swiss cheese, 1 slice of salami etc

VaginaSuprise · 02/03/2017 15:04

I always thought the ultimate book day costume would be God or Jesus. Really the bible offers so many characters to go as. You could just tweek the same dressing gown/nightie year after year and just be any biblical person. Satan would be a good one too.

No offence intended but it is a book after allSmile

LaurieMarlow · 02/03/2017 15:34

stickman eats blueberries served on leaves. Not very filling though.

steppemum · 02/03/2017 15:37

I do sometimes wonder if mn are in the real world.

I have never and will never go out and buy a costume for one day at school!

  1. I can't afford it
  2. in principle I think it is a waste of money and resources.

My kids always go in cobbled together from dress up box, plus stuck/sewn on bits. Sometimes more succesful than others.

But the big issue with WBD is that my kids ALWAYS do one of 2 things

  1. say they are not dressing up, no, don't want a costume, going in uniform, under no circumstances getting dressed up, and then at 7pm the night before change their mind
or
  1. we plan ahead, do it over half term (oh boy was I smug - very busy 2 weeks after half term, so costume sorted in advance, good parenting sticker please) Then they decide (dd2 I am looking at you) that because the letter says go in your FAVOURITE character, and the one she has chosen isn't her FAVOURITE that she has now completely changed her mind about what she is going as. This on Sunday afternoon, I am away for work Mon-Wed, arrive back 7 pm wed night, and dd1's birthday is Thursday.

sigh. 2 oldest now at secondary, dd2 in year 4, 2 more WBD to go.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 02/03/2017 16:17

bumsex
Can you imagine the lunchbox police reaction to a Very Hungry Caterpillar lunch Shock

heateallthebuns · 02/03/2017 16:34

Gonna use that Georges marvellous medicine idea if I can persuade ds next year! Mine went as ironman, but turns out it's tomorrow at their school!!!! I think it's cute whatever they wear.

MiladyThesaurus · 02/03/2017 17:46

If you need super easy ideas for next WBD (particularly for secondary school age), the characters from the divergent series are very easy. Last time DS1 had a WBD dressing up thing, he went as Caleb Prior and just dressed in blue (he already had blue jeans, a blue tshirt and a blue hoodie). You can pick a dauntless character and dress in all black.

DS2 changed character throughout the day apparently. It seems that a grey cloak is very versatile. I dropped off a peregrin took and picked up a Gandalf the grey.

teenagetantrums · 02/03/2017 18:00

My kids always, went as someone from harry potter. School uniform plus a cape and a wand. In my opinion the whole day Isa waste of time. Why don't they just the kids to bring I thiet favourite books.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/03/2017 18:05

YANBU. I know someone whose daughter has gone as Jesse from toy story. Arghh! And most kids on my Facebook have gone as Harry Potterz. There are other books FFS!

NerrSnerr · 02/03/2017 18:09

Toddler are you really complaining that kids have gone as Harry Potter? Shock horror! Children dress up for World Book Day as a very popular character from a very popular book!

TheOnlyLivingBoyinNewCork · 02/03/2017 18:09

There are many other books, but Harry Potter is most certainly a book character, so what are you complaining about? Since when does it say dress up as a character but be original, and don't buy your costume in a shop, and make sure mummy spends half term making it.....etc?

EveOnline2016 · 02/03/2017 18:09

Well seeing as I live in Wales I have already forked out for Welsh costumes for st David day. So world kook day they can wear what they got.

Dd went as Matilda and ds went in clothes that was a bit tatty and went as Charlie from Charlie and the chocolate factory

Ferrisday · 02/03/2017 18:21

If they have seen it in a book, they can dress up as it.
My ds loved his Toystory books.
Yes I bought them because he'd watched the movie.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 02/03/2017 18:59

Mine went in as Tintin in yR. He hated dressing up with a passion so it was just brown trousers, white shirt and hair gel for a quiff.
He hated me giving him a quiff.
This year was Rohl Dahl themed. He was fantastic Mr Fox, so I did some bodging with furry fabric as I happened to have the time.
I think next year I'll print off lots of random words on the computer, stick them on an old T-shirt and send him in as a dictionary.

BlurryFace · 02/03/2017 19:21

One of my 3yo's favourite books is a compendium of short stories about the characters from Toy Story, though he hasn't managed to sit through the film yet. I don't see the harm in it, the characters are probably in several books.

Hulababy · 02/03/2017 19:25

It really really doesn't bother me. We had WBD at my school today and had numerous children in outfits that are generally better known for films, TV or comics. But when asked everyone of the children I spoke to could tell me, and many show me, a book involving their character.

WBD doesn't specify that the book has to be of a specific type, quality or reach a specifically form of 'book snob' meter. Anything that gets children reading any book and interested in books and stories is good, and even more so for some specific children.

And those superhero and princess outfits can be expensive and long sought over - let the children wear them and get your moneys worth if they want to!

Hulababy · 02/03/2017 19:33

Online it says that WBD is organised by UNESCO to promote reading, publishing and copyright.

Nowhere does it say what type of book or that the book must be of a suitable high worthiness.

Its main aim is to promote reading - surely any form of reading is better than no reading.

Hulababy · 02/03/2017 19:35

reuset

You said you won't be convinced by Where's Wally.
WBD itself disagrees with your take on it.
One of their special WBD books this year is a Where's Wally book: www.worldbookday.com/books/
