To be irritated by kids dressing up as Buzz Lightyear on World Book Day?

It's World Book Day. Children are invited to go to school as their favourite book character. Why oh why is Facebook full of photos of little darlings dressed as Buzz Lightyear & various Disney Princesses?!
For some reason it really makes my teeth itch! GrinGrinGrin

Ofud well said.

When mine were little you could spot the parents who were competitive and those like me who couldn't care a shiny shite.

My daughter went as 'anna' from Frozen. Totally not a book. But I ran out of time. There were some Elsa's and princesses I noticed. It doesn't bother me what other children go as.

GahBuggerit · 02/03/2017 13:07

Peaky - seriously ignore ignore ignore. TBF there are a very small number of wind bags people in real life who actually embarrass themselves by giving a crap how OTHER PEOPLES kids go in dressed as.

The only time they are arsed is if they have spent a fortune on an outfit certain their kid will 'win' and they dont and the prize goes to a Buzz or whatever (maybe because Buzz is having a bit of a bad time at the minute and needs a confidence boost for instance).

My DS won last year, his outfit was a last minute bodge job, he won because he'd had a bit of a bad time and was struggling but trying his best so Teacher made sure he won something nice and not school work related to give him a bit of a boost. I loved her for that. Dont think the Mum who spent £100+ on a full on velvet replica Willy Wonka outfit did though Grin

I can't believe people get so fucking judgy about a child's costume, who really cares if a child dresses up as a princess or super hero? All these characters are in books. And as for it being lazy parenting.... well I actually have no words in regards to that asshole comment. Hmm

DS is off to school as Horrid Henry, the WBD theme in his school is 'bedtime stories' so they have the option of going as a character from a book or in their PJs, which is a great idea if you can't source/make a character costume for whatever reason.

MiladyThesaurus · 02/03/2017 13:11

Those saying they don't have time to make a costume, it's around the same time of year each year isn't it? So not like there is short notice. Could be a good thing to do during half term maybe, and it doesn't have to be expensive, most of it can be made up of basic clothes they already have with a few added accessories.

I love the veiled smuggery of one who hasn't realised that the kids not being at school does not mean that you're not at work.

And that actually pretty much all of us have better things to do than scheduling world book day costume making.

Rikalaily · 02/03/2017 13:13

World book day is tomorrow at my kids school. One of my daughters is going as Annie, which started off as a comic strip, then musical theater and movie, then the creator decided to write the book. I ordered it especially so she could take it in on wbd (late) and my girls can't wait to read it!

GColdtimer · 02/03/2017 13:14

peaky please ignore, there are many, many of us who do not give a shiny shit what other people;s children go dressed as to world book day. Honestly, this is competitive parenting at its worst. Flowers for you.

And Chloe1984 Those saying they don't have time to make a costume, it's around the same time of year each year isn't it? So not like there is short notice. Really? I honestly have no words.

FunnysInLaJardin · 02/03/2017 13:14

DS2 went as Batman. DH owns many of the graphic novels and so DS2 took one along for back up.

I too am in the camp of 'they can wear something they already have'.

Its great to see all the kids dressed up no matter what they are wearing.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/03/2017 13:15

YABU. You don't know the parents current financial situation. They could have had an unexpected bill or lost their jobs ect. Anything could have happened. It may have been a case of Oh just use what we've got.

GahBuggerit · 02/03/2017 13:15

I love the juxtaposition of feeling very smug about perfect superior outfits from literary greats but the kids will be picking up judgemental arseholery from their parents Grin

"My, your kids a bit horrible isn't he, hes just been very sneery towards my childs clothing because its not "the right kind""
"yea I know......but he can read Funnybones in his head so....... swings and roundabouts......."

bumsexatthebingo · 02/03/2017 13:15

Well my dd took the book of the film when she dressed as Elsa. A big thick chapter book that she was able to read independently in reception. Because, you know, I spent time listening to my child read and reading to her daily from birth instead of thinking that a fancy costume once a year would have any effect on her reading. The home made, funny and worthy costumes are nothing but a competition among the parents and nothing to do with the child at all.

Whiterabbitears · 02/03/2017 13:15

and that actually pretty much all of us have better things to do than scheduling world book costume making

This! Totally agree!

LaurieMarlow · 02/03/2017 13:16

It's all a complete misguided farce anyway. Kids learn to love books by being read to and reading. Not dressing up as fucking Willy Wonka.

So while I'm sure it's a bit of fun and all that, it turns ugly when it facilitates some of the cuntish behaviour seen on this thread and it becomes a stick to beat other mums with.

An appropriate protest would be to send your kid in an Elsa dress and use the time you would have spent hand crocheting your masterpiece actually reading to them.

Because that's what wbd should actually be about.

spiney · 02/03/2017 13:17

Sorry bumsex but that's crap.

GColdtimer · 02/03/2017 13:18

Oh my word, had missed this: It's just lazy parents who can't be bothered to be remotely interested in encouraging their kids.

Shock

Pointxtaken My dcs did their own outfits for world book day, they love it and spend the whole week planning and changing their minds and helping each other with their costumes. I did their make up this morning, but they are pretty much on their own with it. If that makes me a lazy parent who is not interested in my kids then so bloody be it. FFS.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 02/03/2017 13:18

One year when I had very little time I filled a bottle with coloured liquid, gave DS1 a wooden spoon and sent him in own clothes as George from George's Marvellous Medicine. Sorted Wink

bumsexatthebingo · 02/03/2017 13:18

What's crap? That reading with your child is more likely to get the to love reading than a yearly fancy dress show or that the worthy costumes are more about the parents?

theoracleofdelphi · 02/03/2017 13:19

My OP was a bit tongue in cheek because I quite enjoy the guaranteed ensuing bun fight!

At DD's school today they did have to take the book & actually it was brilliant. My favourite was a year 6 girl in a tall cardboard box with drawn on handles that had "The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe by C S Lewis" written on it! GrinGrinGrin

My DD went in her older sister's ancient cat costume with some black eyeliner on her nose as Adolphus Tips (which is her favourite book)

A lot cheaper than a Disney dress!

OP posts:
Deadsouls · 02/03/2017 13:22

I'm totally not a costume making mum. I'm just not! Just reading up on some of the comments.

GColdtimer · 02/03/2017 13:22

The point is theoracle is that a disney dress is something they will already have in their dressing up box and can shove it on in the morning.

Why would you care? It honestly baffles me the amount of energy people put into judging (and goading) others.

LaurieMarlow - spot on. totally agree with you.

spiney · 02/03/2017 13:25

Bumsex Not the reading bit - that's great of course but the homemade costumes ......nothing but a competition for competitive parents bit. That's crap.

Whiterabbitears · 02/03/2017 13:26

Agree with bumsex after reading this thread that there is competition between parents, I will be looking out for this at school pick up time!

spiney · 02/03/2017 13:26

Sorry didn't quote exactly correctly.

gillybeanz · 02/03/2017 13:27

When my dc used to do this one year nearly all the boys went as Wally, it was difficult to spot where wally wasn't. Grin
