Massive World Book Day/ parenting fail!

I have been really happy with my preparedness for world book day this year. I had a terrible head cold and was ill the end of last week Sinuitis headache - edging into migraine level headache and I was exhausted so I slept a lot through Thursday/Friday/Saturday was still feeling ropey Monday but I went into town and gathered the things I needed to make two costumes for WBD.

Finished off the costumes yesterday - and I was happy with the results dd1 and dd2 looked great in them. All good.

Dd1 is in a different school to dd2 she sets off earlier and went off looking ace - so far so good - pic on FB for the relatives.

DD2 got dressed up and I took a picture she asked me to put that on FB as she likes the nice comments from various Aunties and Uncles etc. We set off Then she see's some children she knows from reception/ yr 1 - we are only a few minutes from school so we were virtually there. The children ask dd what she is wearing and she tells them and I say "you know for World Book day". Mother of these children (the younger one is wearing a tutu so I thought she was dressed up too..) just looks at me and says nowt. We carry on through school side gate and I notice complete lack of costumes - I say to dd2 "are you sure it is today?" She says "yes - we were talking about it this yesterday!" - clearly I had missed the bit in the newsletter where they said they were doing World Book day - - not on world book day but a week or so later!

So my dd2 school is doing WBD next week - because that makes sense, and I have dragged poor dd2 to school dressed up on the wrong frickin day - I feel terrible and stupid about it and pissed off with the school. I imagine if I had been doing all the pick ups the last week instead of sharing them with dh I may have had that useful convo with another parent where the date would have come up. But I can't be sure of that - or obviously if I had noticed the date in the newsletter - poor dd2!

although I do have to wonder about not celebrating world book day ON world book day - we wouldn't celebrate a bank holiday on a different day so seems a bit silly...

Great life lesson for your child - everyone makes mistakes!!!

The local facebook group has a few snippy posts on it now, quite a few parents have sent their primary kids dressed up when they are not doing it today (it is actually the week after next for some reason).

The school have only sent out an email about it, no paper copies, it seems like quite a few parents have not received or read it.

One parent furious at the suggestion by an a fellow parent that school have spare uniform that they'll probably loan the kids for today, doesn't want her child dressed in someone elses 'cast offs'. She was phoning school to enquire! School are rather strict on uniform normally...

currently donning dark glasses and possibly a hat for the school run.. and leaving at last minute. Blush

The ones doing it the week after next are probably killing two birds with one stone by doubling it up with Comic Relief!

I made a silly and embarrassing mistake last week and I'm still cringing about it OP. UGH. It's a horrible feeling. Oddly enough it was also a situation where I hadn't read something carefully. I showed up expecting one thing, all bouncey and jolly and was met by confused faces. I actually burst into tears and ran out so you have one up on me! Hey ho! Such is life!

RubyRoseViolet · 02/03/2017 15:40

And I was the only parent (out of 300 children) who sent their child into school on an INSET day once.....and I'm a teacher myself and I was at my own INSET day! Does that help?! I'm actually quite organised usually!

DS' school did WBD today but despite having the newsletter in front of me I panicked and made him change out of his uniform and into jeans and a minecraft t-shirt on Tuesday morning.

I'm not sure how I managed to make that mistake as my intention was to get him an actual costume on Wednesday when I got paid so it should've clicked that I was early ... Didn't dawn on me until I saw all the other kids arriving in uniform.

I had to ring my school yesterday to double check. WBD is obv today, school had sent a text before half term saying it was tomorrow, ds1 said tomorrow but ds2 swears it was today. And I've not done pick up all week since they've been back as have been at work. Luckily it's tomorrow

DD has been brilliant about it. She is such a level headed girl it is quite a relief as the older two have Aspergers and a mistake like this would send their anxiety levels into the stratosphere! Thank you for the shared experiences folks, I have come to terms with my fuck up. But I am having beer tonight!
