AIBU?

To ask for the rest of the chicken?

I recently went over to a friend's house after dinner and she and her DH had had roast chicken plus the trimmings.

While she was making cups of tea, she started to bag up the rest of the chicken and the carcass to go in the bin! There was at least half a chicken left and so I expressed my astonishment at her throwing it away.

Apparently she never keeps leftovers and always bins whatever is left, even if it's half a roast!Shock
So I asked her if I could have it instead. She said yes but was a bit Confused about it, but I couldn't bear all that going to waste when you could get another 2 meals out of it. So WIBU?

It's only weird to ask for the chicken if they were planning on eating but I find it quite shocking that people would throw good food in the bin!

I do this every time I go to my sister's or friends for a roast, I take the leftover meat, veg and potatoes so I can have a roast the following day. They now make extra for me to take as it's my favourite meal and cooking a roast for one is such a faff Grin

you would be most welcome around mine, due to an awful upbringing I have soo many hang ups regarding food. If my food goes cold on my plate, that's it I can't eat any more so have to leave it and it gets binned. I cannot reheat food, any food, I can't batch cook as that would mean reheating. The same goes for anything left in a joint after the main meal is served, I often throw away half eaten gammon joints, a chicken with just a breast off etc, Xmas day turkey goes in the bin Xmas day evening, I'd probably barf handing it over but you would be most welcome to it

Good for you! The only reason I cringed reading your message was discovering that your friend was about to waste (CRIMINAL!!) perfectly good food. I really can't bear waste of any kind, it's so upsetting. So although she may have thought it slightly odd, shame on her for being so wasteful, and I hope you enjoyed the chicken. xx

If food was going in the bin but I knew I could use it, I would totally ask for it!!

NennyNooNoo I'm not buying far more food than I need; I buy the right amount for DH and I and if there's any left over that he doesn't want (though he usually does), it gets thrown away.

Unfortunately, the hypothetical chicken I bought was already dead and would have been bought by someone else had I not bought it.

The thought of eating food after it's been cooked and isn't hot anymore makes me feel quite ill

How utterly bizarre. There are countless types of food that we cook and eat cold. Haven't you ever eaten a chicken sandwich?

I remember taking a food parcel round to a friends once, just bits and pieces out the cupboard because she was on the bones of her arse. As I was putting stuff in the fridge she mentioned a half joint of pork that was in there, her mum had bought it and cooked it there. It was headed for the bin 😲😲😲 Half a joint of pork ffs !!

I'd do it in a heartbeat at a close friend's or family member's. What's the big deal if they are going to toss it anyway? But I wouldn't ask at the home of someone I didn't know really well.

I don't use the turkey carcass and at Thanksgiving I routinely offer it to DS1 and DiL or my brother to take home for stock or soup and one or the other usually takes me up on it. It goes to waste otherwise.

I feel like I've totally let myself down if I throw food away. I always try and use up leftovers and bit and bobs in the fridge. Throwing food away is immoral, in my opinion.

Why not just buy individual portions "Dimples"? Then there wouldn't be as much wastage.

Given the carbon footprint of the food we buy, not to mention the methane produced by landfill and all manner of other ethical and environmental issues, throwing away perfectly good food really does have an impact well beyond your own wallet.

if only it was that easy .. I can get up Sunday morning, be expecting to make dinner for 6, buy for 6, cook for 6 and as I'm about to dish up find out there will only be 2 of us ..

I do think some people's obsession with food waste is a reason they are overweight though.

MIL is obsessed by it so will eat everything in sight to stop it going to waste. She is very overweight.

She has reduced Ds1 to tears over half a piece of uneaten toast. I cannot get myself worked up about 1/2 of bread.

Being from Yorkshire I would likely have called the police if any of my mates tried to throw a perfectly good roast away.

Imo you were restrained.

I'd have asked too but I'd have said it was for the dog. We do have a dog.

This kind of wastage (and ridiculous "I would think you were weird for asking for the leftovers" type comment) gives me the rage. A bit like "I can only use the bath towel once then I just HAVE to wash it cos it's so bleugh".

FFS. We really are so pampered in our first world lives.

And I don't agree that obsessing about food waste leads to obesity. Good grief. It's just common sense not to throw good food away if it can be used again.

SpreadYourHappiness - you are absolutely wrong about food wastage not affecting anyone else. Such a short sighted attitude, hardly know where to begin.

I'm from Yorkshire too. Nothing justifies such a terrible waste. I roast, then have chicken the next day and gorgeous soup for lunch. If I don't eat all the soup I freeze the rest. I practically gag when stripping the bones but soup. I still wouldn't have asked for the meat but would judge FOREVER.

You were not B at all U.
People who waste perfectly good food like that should be forcibly starved for a bit.
That'd larn 'em!

Yanbu at all. I agree it's morally wrong to waste food, especially meat. It makes me think your friend must be a complete airhead with more money than sense.

For those of you who think there is no environmental 'cost' to wasting food, you are quite, quite wrong:

AcrossthePond55 Fair enough, I've read your article and I see that food wastage across the world does affect the environment.

However, that won't affect how I deal with food. I suppose, I just don't care.

I would do it! I simply don't have the money to waste food, everything is planned to within an inch of its life. If someone gave me food to make another dinner for the 3 of us that would give me a spare pound or so for next month as I could push a dinner back. Not to mention lovely real chicken soup, mmm...
