AIBU?

To ask for the rest of the chicken?

I recently went over to a friend's house after dinner and she and her DH had had roast chicken plus the trimmings.

While she was making cups of tea, she started to bag up the rest of the chicken and the carcass to go in the bin! There was at least half a chicken left and so I expressed my astonishment at her throwing it away.

Apparently she never keeps leftovers and always bins whatever is left, even if it's half a roast!Shock
So I asked her if I could have it instead. She said yes but was a bit Confused about it, but I couldn't bear all that going to waste when you could get another 2 meals out of it. So WIBU?

The thought of eating food after it's been cooked and isn't hot anymore makes me feel quite ill
Then cook it again in a curry or stir-fry. Or I make a risotto sometimes. And use the carcass for soup or stock. None of that is cold. Do you not eat ham? Because that's been cooked and is now cold.

Reminds me of when I was in a pub in Paris and the lady at the table next to mine left her sausages (which were on a side plate, untouched). The waitress clearing the table must have seen me eyeing them as she offered them to me saying that it would be a shame to waste food. I was like, yeah, gimme! DH wanted to hide under the table though.

I'm quite happy to be seen as odd if it stops food being wasted!

I wouldn't have asked, I don't waste food but I wouldn't make a friend feel uncomfortable, I value my friends over chickens.

I would have been horrified... at someone throwing the chicken away! I probably would have thrown myself in front of the bin shouting 'noooooooohhh' Grin

I would definitely ask OP. Although would also try and educate my friend about delicious leftover roast chicken sandwiches.

I wouldn't ask for leftovers normally obviously - but half a chicken in the bin!! Shock

I'm not sure the dead chicken cares whether it's all been eaten or not Confused

BreatheDeep No, thank you. I don't re-cook food either. I'm quite happy to eat pre-cooked meats and so on that I've bought, I just don't like leftovers. Each to their own. It doesn't affect anyone else.

That poor chicken. It almost didn't fulfill it's destiny.

Spread - your attitude is extraordinarily wasteful and - frankly - ridiculous.

Don't worry startwig, there's plenty of us as 'odd' as you in this regard! Wink

As someone who will even batter the bones to make stock with an old stainless steel hammer (especially kept for this task) and if I don't have time to do it, I will freeze the carcass until I do have the time, YANBU.

My auntie does the same OP. I always host on new years day and she takes home all the left overs. Comes with tupperware and everything.

Nothing wrong with it IMO. And it would save a stinky chicken carcass going in my bin so I would be quite pleased.

I get be FIL the carcass for stock so wouldn't have batted an eyelid if you asked for my leftovers.

I've taken chicken leftover for "stock" and then returned some of the stock (having eaten the rest of the chicken. I really hate waste too.

Yanbu! I would ask for it and would not be ashamed! I think wasting food is disgusting.

If your good friends why not - you are used to each other's ways. My gran used to ask for leftovers if they were sausages!

I would be horrified, and not only would I have insisted on taking the leftovers, but she'd have got quite a ticking off about wasting food.

I can understand not keeping the bones for stock, not everyone does that (although I do), but you don't throw away perfectly good meat, ffs!

Naicehamshop Oh yes, I admit I am wasteful when it comes to food. But that's my choice; it doesn't affect anyone else.

Im sure you're being provocative and your posts should be taken with a pinch of salt.

I probably would've done the same. In my house we never have leftovers from a chicken! My DTDs will pick at it 'till only bare bones are left. There is seldom enough for sandwiches the next day. To waste half a chicken though... ouch Shock.

It does affect other people but if you can't see that then there is no hope changing your mind.

Report
NennyNooNoo · 01/03/2017 19:46

Wasting food does affect other people because you are buying far more food than you need and reducing the amount available to others. You won't see the results yourself but imagine if everyone bought twice as much food as they needed. Although I think the real issue here is a waste of an animal's life.
