AIBU?

To ask for the rest of the chicken?

I recently went over to a friend's house after dinner and she and her DH had had roast chicken plus the trimmings.

While she was making cups of tea, she started to bag up the rest of the chicken and the carcass to go in the bin! There was at least half a chicken left and so I expressed my astonishment at her throwing it away.

Apparently she never keeps leftovers and always bins whatever is left, even if it's half a roast!Shock
So I asked her if I could have it instead. She said yes but was a bit Confused about it, but I couldn't bear all that going to waste when you could get another 2 meals out of it. So WIBU?

Nah I'd have asked too. I don't go in for this magic chicken stuff I'd never be able to make it last a month like the rest of you however it would still do a pie or sandwiches and a stock.

So fast just to watch it go into a bin when there's another meal and a soup to he gotten out of it.

Bit then I take veg peelings fir the bunnies anyway...Blush

No worries Sukey. I probably could have been clearer that I am in support of the OP.

">>IMO, saying "food waste doesn't bother me at all" is a bit like saying "it's fine to be rude to old people because it doesn't actually hurt them" or "I'm ok with vandalising buses, they still run, what's the problem?"

I would've offered a guest the (food) chicken in general after we have close friends visit, I normally offer for them to have anything they'd like before leaving, so I wouldn't think it odd if someone asked. It's good not to waste food.

Whatever people say, food in the UK is comparatively cheap for most people and this is the consequence in that people don't value it. This then leads to animals being raised in disgusting conditions to keep it cheap because a lot of people won't pay for a nicely raised chicken. And then they get all precious about 'not eating leftovers' and think nothing about throwing half of it away because it wasn't especially expensive.

This x10000. If you can't afford to be eating ethical meat then you shouldn't be eating meat IMO.

I definitely would've asked for the chicken if I knew it was just being thrown away. I have a friend that doesn't eat leftovers and whenever I'm over, she gives me all the food she was going to throw away. Sometimes there's a lot of it, enough to feed me for 3-4 days. She once asked, "are you sure you want this stuff because I was just getting ready to throw it all away". The stuff was cooked either the day before or earlier that night and it was perfectly fine to eat. Then one day she said, "I appreciate you being my garbage disposal because now my garbage isn't as heavy now that there's no more leftovers in it. You are more than welcome to stop by and take away all my leftovers because you know I don't want them".

You sound like such a tight arse Scrooge! I’d be disgusted if someone asked me that. Absolutely no class whatsoever. And it’s totally something MIL would do, actually she has done which is why I can’t stand it!!

If you can't stand something because it's something your mother in law has done, you really need to rethink how you approach life imo!

@ihatehashtags why would you be disgusted if someone asked for the food they knew you were throwing away? Of course I'm not asking for food off a plate, but I hate waste and if she does not want the food and has told me she normally throws it out what's the problem with someone else getting use out of it.

I always ask for the food I know my friends are going to bin. Why let it go to the landfill and if I know for a fact that they're going to throw it away, why not take it?

That's really wasteful. But asking for it seems grabby to me. If she'd offered it, fine.

Well done OP. Good for you. Pisses me off when an animal has died just to be thrown in the bin quarter eaten and I think you are by far the morally superior one in this situation and fuck social norms.

I was once peeling veg for a friend and, rather than chuck the peelings in the bin wrapped them in newspaper to take home for my compost

Instead, fry up with some onion, garlic and chilli. You're welcome! Smile
