Annoyed - drinks at work

ChanningsPony · 01/03/2017 15:56

So, I've been in my new job for a few months now and we all share making teas and coffees.

I like doing it sometimes, chance to walk about and get away from the screen. I'll do it once a day or so for 5/6 people and we take it in turns with no issue.

I like sugar in my drink. Another team member feels like I shouldn't have sugar and will not put it in. Just one sugar, that's all I have.
Surely, it's up to me if I would like sugar or not and not for them to dictate?

AIBU to put milk in their black coffee everyday? Grin Grin

All food and drink brought into my office goes through the Decalorising Machine in the lobby. Or so we tell ourselves.

HappyFlappy · 05/03/2017 18:53

I wouldn't bother making them one at all and when it's their round, decline. Fucking arsey to do this. Sick of the fucking food police.

I'm with expat here - but putting milk into their black coffee (it's good for them - it's full of calcium) would also be very, very tempting . . . Grin

Iamastonished · 05/03/2017 18:54

I would put sugar in your coffee if I was making it - if I remember. TBH I only know one person in RL who has sugar in hot drinks, so adding sugar isn't naturally on my radar. No-one on my team at work takes sugar BTW. I think more and more these days it is unusual. I still wouldn't feel it my responsibility to be the sugar police.

If I were you I would just keep some sugar in my desk.

HappyFlappy · 05/03/2017 18:54

Bichy

LOL Grin Grin Grin

HappyFlappy · 05/03/2017 18:58

diabetic was putting the sugar in after taking advice from her medical specialist as a way to maintain her blood sugar

Excellent point noot - hypoglycaemia can be very dangerous.

It's got sod all to do with other people how someone likes their food and drink.

AlpacaPicnic · 05/03/2017 19:08

When I First started work, I was the only person in the world ever to take sugar in my tea... you would think according to the responses of the people I worked with.
Honestly, they acted like I asked for a scoop of human poo stirred in... they pulled faces, they remarked loudly on how they couldn't possibly drink tea with sugar in it. I might have 'accidently' added sugar to their drinks just once.
It worked :)

Heatherjayne1972 · 05/03/2017 19:28

See this is the reason I never drink tea/coffee at work
Just water no one can get that wrong

WankingMonkey · 05/03/2017 19:34

I have a friend who does this and it drives me insane. I have commented a few times and she insists she HAS put sugar in too as if I cannot tell the difference. I usually just decline a cuppa if I am at hers now..its not worth it.

MammaBean1988 · 05/03/2017 19:51

I would like to know more about the office dynamic. Does this colleague police anyone else's drinks? Are they a fudrick in other, unrelated, ways?

Could this be, for example, a gender or age or weight -based issue ("i know better cos I'm xyz")?

Ya def Nbu. They def are bu.

MrsDoylesTeabags · 05/03/2017 19:58

That's just daft, People can be so pissy can't they.
We make rounds in our office too but people usually get what they ask for.
Next time you make a round what you should do is make all the teas and milky drinks first and then stir their drink before washing the spoon. Coffee tastes all tainted with the other drinks and is PA as fuck but they'll think you're just rubbish at making drinks and not be sure whats wrong with their drink

Birdsbeesandtrees · 05/03/2017 19:58

wicked. I would have taken my own with me and said "I know you don't use salt so I've saved you the trouble of you buying it just for me" And smiled sweetly.

pho3be · 05/03/2017 20:26

Read this with interest as my co worker does exactly the same thing!!!!

The first time I met my MIL she asked me if I'd like a hot drink. So I said yes followed by Tea and one sugar please. First she tells me that they don't "do" sugary drinks in her house and it spoils the Lapdance Shoeshine or whatever it was called. So I said no thanks. Dh was sat there like Hmm He went and made me a coffee and pointedly shouted that he was putting some Demerara in for me. She sat there with a face like thunder. The next time we went he'd had a word and they'd got in some PG Tips and white sugar. :o

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 06/03/2017 10:06

Also when she comes around I always offer her a coffee which after inspecting the jar and discovering its Douwe Egbert she may accept a cup. However I always give her Aldi gold and she's never noticed. Not once.

paxillin · 06/03/2017 11:30

Thank Christ for that Flabrador. The last thing we want is the calm voice of reason!

I would love someone who does this explain here why they refuse to put sugar / salt / etc in others food or drinks.

I hate sugar in my tea but I have about ten sachets of sugar in my drawer in case visitors like sugar.

He's a twat. Twats at work are so much harder to deal with because of the dynamics if a friend did this you'd just say wtf is wrong with you? He's doing it for a weird bit of power and control. Arsehole.

THIS ^

QuitMoaning · 06/03/2017 15:59

Sugar in tea makes me gag and when I used to make rounds of tea, I would continually forget for one person (it became a joke between us all).

But, I did used to collect sachets and give them to her for those times I did forget so I wasn't truly awful.

CheddarIsNotTheOnlyCheese · 06/03/2017 18:16

Paxillin that made me :o too. Sounds like a stellar username. I'm sad. I know I am but I have a ziplock bag with my beloved Twinings Breakfast tea bags and a little pot of sugar on me at all times. Nothing worse than not being able to have a nice brew when you need one.

Stars2theside · 07/03/2017 01:46

I think it's totally unreasonable that you haven't done it already! I would have given them 2 opportunities... 1st one I'd have asked why no sugar, 2nd one I'd have said forgot the sugar again! Then when it was my turn I would make the milkiest coffee known to man! Grin then if questioned - say "it tastes sooo much better that way!"
