Driver caused me to emergency stop and just drove off!

Hi,
I've just returned from going out with my 20 month old daughter in the car. Whilst driving along a road, a learner driver pulled out in front of me, causing me to emergency stop, the driver just carried on and swiftly drove away. Am I being unreasonable to be shocked that the driving instructor in charge didn't get out to see if we were ok, or even awknowledge what had happened. We are ok and I have his reg no.
Thanks!

OP not OW dyac.

HateSummer · 28/02/2017 16:28

Yeah I know. Crap isn't it?

KateDaniels2 · 28/02/2017 16:31

If the Op was 9n a bend and didnt see the car until the kast secind, she has no way of knowing if the car just signalled. Or didnt check mirrors.

It actually could bevargued she was go8ng to fast for that corner. Had there have been standing traffic and sonething in the road she would have had to emergency brake.

Excuse typos. Need to stop posting at work Grin

Northernlurker · 28/02/2017 16:33

I think you need driving lessons op. I agree with every other poster on the thread, you've been very silly about this.

As someone who works for the police I can tell you exactly how it would go...

Police how can I help

Well a learner driver pulled out in front of me and had to apply my brakes hard.

Oh ok was there a collision

No I managed to apply my brakes in time but the learner driver just drove off they didn't even stop and get out which I know is illegal

Sorry, let me get this right you think it's illegal to drive away from a non-accident

Yes I had my baby in the car and I had to slam on, I have the car reg would you like it?

For what?

Well as they have broken the law driving away without checking if I am ok, also to send someone round to have a chat with the driving instructor about the learner pulling out of a junction

Ok, unfortunately we don't send police round to people's houses to inform them that they "nearly" caused an accident, especially learner drivers, if the police did do that we would have no resources for solving actual crimes.

The rest of the conversation would depend on the other person..... in the ops case she would probably flounce off the phone without so much as a thank you or goodbye... never to be heard of again!!!

I think the relevance of the 20 month old daughter to the story is the same as the reason why people put 'Baby on Board' signs in their rear screens. I always drive much more carefully behind any car that displays the sign whereas I am totally reckless behind cars that do not

pictish · 28/02/2017 16:48

Hehe this is brilliant. OP don't be daft. We are taught to do an emergency stop while learning to drive for a reason...so you can stop suddenly and safely, which you did. It is not illegal to carry on after causing another driver to do an emergency stop - after all, how can we know?
Now stop being so silly.

DonkeyOaty · 28/02/2017 16:56

OP has had a fright, a near miss with your baby is quite upsetting.

Go have a hot sweet tea.

trappedinsuburbia · 28/02/2017 16:57

OP sorry you got a fright, its even worse when the little ones are in the car BUT......
if your going round a corner and there is a hidden junction (there should be a road sign showing this) then you need to be better prepared that this is likely to happen. Sorry but I actually think your in the wrong here and were travelling too fast. If you can't brake in the distance of the actual bit of road you can see (which you managed to) then again you are going to fast. The speed limit here is irrelevant.

Willow2016 · 28/02/2017 16:57

Sorry yo got a fright OP but totally OTT reaction, having your child in the car has no bearing on what happened at all, you would still have had to stop if they werent there!

No harm was done, next time slow down when you approach a bend in the road, you never know whats round it.

Oh and re read your higway code Wink

LouKout · 28/02/2017 17:03

Donkey is right.

Bet most of the people being rude and sarky to OP would not be thrilled either if a car pulled out in front of them nearly causing an accident, while they had a baby in car.

sparechange · 28/02/2017 17:04

OP isn't coming back to this thread...

pictish · 28/02/2017 17:11

LouKout we've all been there.
It is customary to mutter some expletives under your breath and maybe wave your hands about a bit. Driving is dangerous.

Verbena37 · 28/02/2017 17:15

Nope......not illegal to carry on after emergency stop.
An emergency stop OP should be carried out swiftly, smoothly and safely. To pull off again, check blind spots and mirrors before signalling and pulling away.

Whilst the learner shouldn't have pulled out, YANVU to assume you don't have to alter your driving when there is a problem in the road. As you said you were doing 28mph, then went around a bend.....you should be aware of having to possibly slow or stop at any time and especially at a bend. There could have been an ac int I need the road, some sheep, a lorry slowly pulling out etc. Always be ready and don't assume you just carry on going.
When you saw him signal, you should have automatically slowed your speed. Perhaps then, you wouldn't have had to stop so suddenly.

Been driving long..?

HarmlessChap · 28/02/2017 17:48

Had a classic recently approaching a side road the driver, chatting away to passenger, pulled out to turn right into my path then realised they hadn't looked and slammed on the brakes, as had I a fraction before. Apologetic wave and mouthed sorry before reversing back into the road they came out of without looking to see that a car (turning left) had moved up to occupy the position. Thankfully that car quickly realised what was happening and continued to pull out and the two narrowly missed each other. None of us got out to check, everyone was OK.

I didn't even put a post on facebook.

insancerre · 28/02/2017 17:50

Oh dear
I don't drive and people like the op make me very glad I'm not a car driver but still quite scared that I'm a pedestrian

ThoraGruntwhistle · 28/02/2017 17:51

Not sure where you got the idea that you had to stop and exchange details if you've caused someone else to brake Confused it must take you bleedin ages to get anywhere.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 28/02/2017 17:53

Bet most of the people being rude and sarky to OP would not be thrilled either if a car pulled out in front of them nearly causing an accident, while they had a baby in car.

Of course no one would be happy whoever was in the car, baby or not!

I wouldn't however have demanded they should have stopped, taken their number or claimed wrongly it's illegal.
