Driver caused me to emergency stop and just drove off!

Hi,
I've just returned from going out with my 20 month old daughter in the car. Whilst driving along a road, a learner driver pulled out in front of me, causing me to emergency stop, the driver just carried on and swiftly drove away. Am I being unreasonable to be shocked that the driving instructor in charge didn't get out to see if we were ok, or even awknowledge what had happened. We are ok and I have his reg no.
Thanks!

What if, instead of the learner driver pulling out on you, it had been a child running out into the road?

The OP stopped and didn't hit anything. So the child would be incredibly lucky it was the OP driving down the road and not some speeding idiot who couldn't stop in time.

You were supposed to get out, check that the deer was OK, write a 5000 word essay on what had happened, complete with diagram of road conditions and a watercolour of the deer, then log it with 101. Obvs.

Don't be daft OP. You had a shock but you can't just make up 'facts' about the law to suit you, it's not illegal not to stop. There was no collision. Well done you on your fast reaction.

ExplodedCloud · 28/02/2017 14:05

Oh Hattie. You forgot to stipulate a diagram.

ExplodedCloud · 28/02/2017 14:07

Whoops sorry. You did!

I did an emergency stop yesterday morning when a deer jumped out in front of me and then I just drove on

I know someone who was knocked off his bike by a deer that ran into him.

The deer then ran off and didn't even leave it's insurance details, leaving my friend in the road with a broken collar bone.

Buzzardbird · 28/02/2017 14:07

How long have you been driving? Is this really the first time you have had to slam your brakes on?
Drivers pull out on me daily, and I don't travel far these days.

I did think that Buzzard. I emergency stopped this morning actually, nearly went bonnet to bonnet with a tractor who was stopped on a sharp corner.. I was only going steady too!

ExplodedCloud · 28/02/2017 14:11

Bloody sheep jumped onto our car once and then bounced off without a word. Inconsiderate Baaaastard

Huldra · 28/02/2017 14:12

They made a mistake, you caught it and used the breaks, no cars were hit or people hurt. It can give you a fright yes but all you can do is carry on, mentally and physically! The other option is for two cars to be stopped the other side of a slight bend, car doors opening and closing, people engaged in a conversation. That would be a good way to start a real pile up.

RTKangaMummy · 28/02/2017 14:13

Are you near a test centre (if in driving school car) cos it might have been a driving test was being taken?

Buzzardbird · 28/02/2017 14:15

Hope you are ok Everything that is a problem at the moment...with the hedge trimming going on.
The birds that keep flying in front of me causing me to slam on the brakes are going to be in big trouble now I know they are supposed to stop.
I hope you are ok now too OP, I am sure it was a shock if it was the first time it has happened. You will encounter this at least weekly though I'm afraid.

I would take it to the papers OP, get 20 month old to do a great 'compo face'.

BewtySkoolDropowt · 28/02/2017 14:16

Op, I seriously think you should report it to the police, on the non emergency number.

Then report back here to tell us what they said.

melj1213 · 28/02/2017 14:16

YABU - you did an emergency stop, yes it can leave you shaken and it would have been nice for the instructor, if not the driver, to have acknowledged their actions impacted on you (with a hand wave for example) but beyond that, they did nothing wrong beyond being a learner driver making a mistake

You were driving down a 30mph road at 28mph and should have been braking for the "slight bend" anyway, so at 25 mph if someone pulled out in front of me, I'd call having to stop suddenly as more like "heavy breaking" than an "emergency stop".

but it's still illegal to carry on, if the person carries out an emergency stop.

For someone who is so indignant about a learner driver making mistakes about road use, you don't seem to know much about them either! Maybe you could have a few more lessons on the Highway Code, emergency stops in particular.

Wouldn't matter if you got the Police on them Cloud, they would just pull the wool over the PC's eyes.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 28/02/2017 14:17

Oh, I'm fine Buzzard . Funnily enough, it was one of my DP's employees, he's got a contracting business.
I don't think his response of putting his thumb up and simply moving out of my way was good enough to be honest. Disgraceful. Grin

Blardy peasants Everything...and they're another one 'pheasants', no regard for road safety at all!

kali110 · 28/02/2017 14:19

What are you going to do with the reg? Claim for damages Confused

Aeroflotgirl · 28/02/2017 14:20

Were they in a learner school car, it is the driving instructors responsibility. I could understand if she collided with you, but you only had to stop suddenly, btw those who have a full licence do this as well.

NerrSnerr · 28/02/2017 14:20

I'd love to hear that phone call to the police I really would. Yes they made a mistake but I'm sure that you had noticed the learner at the junction so was aware they may pull out? All that happened is you stopped your car and if anything like me everything comes flying off the back seat.

Did you honestly have time to think 'I'll grab the pen and paper and write down the reg' and then sit there in the middle of the road writing it down?

Only if it were a foreign learner driver. Ideally wearing a hijab.
