To say hello to a blackbird every evening and feel lovely about it

Every evening at dusk, there is a beautiful blackbird singing its tuneful little heart out just behind my house. Same tree, and same time (later and later as the nights get longer). I just happened to notice him a few nights in row but I actively stand outside to hear it now.

The latest development is that I actually address him as Mr Blackbird (maybe Mrs Blackbird but I don't like to pry), say good evening to him and tell him how lovely he is (may have even asked him if he had a good day tonight!)

Does anyone else say hello to random things and get an overbearing sense of warmth from it?

Just discovered that DH regularly chats to robins, asks them all sorts, no answers yet though.

Saw my first coal tit yesterday.....was really excited!

I don't know if you find the same but all the birds seem to love fat balls as well as the food I scatter on the ground. They disappear even faster in the summer and I sometimes have to replenish a couple of times a day. I get buckets of 50 fat balls delivered by Wilko and they disapppear at a fast rate.

The top of my peanut feeder doesn't close properly because of the branch it's on and I've noticed a blue tit dipping it's whole body head first into the feeder and taking a whole peanut, instead of perching and pecking on the outside. I'm scared he's going to get stuck in the feeder and may have to move it to a new branch as his whole body goes in when the feeder is half full.

I started putting water out for them in a very big pot tray. I had no idea how much they needed it but watching them they use it quite frequently. It's so funny seeing a couple perched on the side trying to have a drink while getting drenched by a couple of starlings having a very vigorous bath Grin

I go hiking in woodland at weekends and there's a sort of robin relay keeping an eye on me the whole way. If they're close enough, I say hello.

RumbleMum · 10/03/2017 23:29

Me too. I have a female blackbird who pops up when I go down to my chickens and she squawks at me till I give her mealworms. For some reason I always greet her with 'hello, lady!'

Mysteriouscurle · 10/03/2017 23:33

We have several mr and mrs blackbirds a robin and a grey squirrel. I love the blackbirds especially. We also have several other birds that come to the feeder. I sit at my window with my rspb book flicking hurriedly through all the different pictures trying to identify them. When I retire I shall sit there all day and be an expertGrin

Mysteriouscurle · 10/03/2017 23:34

I talk to them all as wellBlush

EllieFredrickson · 10/03/2017 23:44

Us too. For a good year or so we know we had the same blackbird as he had a streak of white in his wing. He was called Maggy after a Magpie.

We have quite a few - probably encouraged by the mealworms.

Loads out and about too - not so keen when they fly low in front of the car. Find myself telling them off!

Our blackbird has been singing his heart out recently. I'm sure that one of his phrases sounds like "I'm a Barbie girl" or maybe I'm just imagining it.Hmm

Always Smile

When I was in my first year of uni in halls in the middle of the city a blackbird used to sing all through the early hours of the morning and I would always talk to it, I loved that there was a tiny piece of nature in the middle of the city that most people probably never noticed.

10 years on and DD and I always talk to/about all of the birds we see on our walk to nursery through the park every morning. I'm very proud that she's only 2 and can name a number of different birds accurately Smile

GallicosCats · 26/04/2017 21:44

MumW birds can be great mimics so you never know, he could have heard the song.Grin

YANBU

We have a beautiful robin I always greet in my garden.

I'm sure he's trying to communicate with me.

And , yes, it definitely gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside Smile

Onceuponatime21 · 26/04/2017 22:24

I love my garden birds. So much so that the cat is going to have to be confined to the house for the next 6 months as she has already clocked one of the blackbird nests... I love cats, and my cat, but love my birds too!

maitaimojito · 26/04/2017 22:27

I have a blackbird that darts between my feet when I'm gardening, picking up the worms that have been dug up.

Every time I go in the garden he seems to appear. I've started to feed him sultanas and he was sat next to the window chirping at me the other day when I got home from work. It's amazing how tame he is.

stayathomegardener · 26/04/2017 22:47

We had a Robin that kept coming in the house.
He sat on top of the tree at Christmas.
DH found him dead in the porch last month. I was irrationally upset.

Freyanna · 26/04/2017 22:56

I always speak to cats when I am out and see one.

We also have a blackbird in the garden I call Larry. He is always first out when I replenish the bird feeder.

We have two wood pigeons who I call Wilfred and Eileen after the WW1 couple who were devoted to each other.

Blimey01 · 26/04/2017 22:58

Since i was was a child when i see a magpie on its own i always say ' hello Sir how's your wife?'
Not sure where it comes from Hmm

AverysillyoldHector · 26/04/2017 23:02

Our Mr blackbird sings beautifully every evening, it is just a wonderful sound. I love lying in bed listening to Mr and Mrs owl chatting across the trees. And we have Mr and Mrs Buzzard who raise a family every year - I always tell them how pleased we are to have them back Smile

UrsulaPandress · 26/04/2017 23:06

I speak to every animal I see.

At the moment I take a glass of wine into the garden of an evening to enjoy the blackbird's song.

Trustyourself2 · 26/04/2017 23:06

I was whistling to a blackbird in my garden today and I swear he was answering back. Probably tellin me to eff off and get a life!
