To say hello to a blackbird every evening and feel lovely about it

badonkydonk · 27/02/2017 18:20

Every evening at dusk, there is a beautiful blackbird singing its tuneful little heart out just behind my house. Same tree, and same time (later and later as the nights get longer). I just happened to notice him a few nights in row but I actively stand outside to hear it now.

The latest development is that I actually address him as Mr Blackbird (maybe Mrs Blackbird but I don't like to pry), say good evening to him and tell him how lovely he is (may have even asked him if he had a good day tonight!)

Does anyone else say hello to random things and get an overbearing sense of warmth from it?

We have blackbirds, sparrows, a pair of coal tits, what I think might be a willow fit, a wren and a robin in our garden. There are also some collared doves & pigeons. I love them all & could watch them all day.

There's also a couple of guard crows who shout at the cats & fox whenever they get too close. Today a cat had climbed the tree behind our garden to try & catch the blackbird I think, and the crows were screaming at it until it left!

Thank you.

I've been keeping mine on a diet of peanuts, wild bird mix and nijer seed for the goldfinches.

I'll try some raisins tomorrow.

They also like it when I do some weeding and sweeping, I suppose it's the grubs they are after, so it motivates me to do more gardening.

Slippersandacuppa · 28/02/2017 20:20

Oooh you lovely lot!

Mr and Mrs Duck have started popping into our garden every morning when I'm letting the chickens out. I always give them a scoop of layers pellets/corn. They seem very appreciative (and I must say, he is particularly chivalrous. Always lets her eat first. She has a very healthy appetite) and it makes me wonder if they could be the same pair that we saw regularly last year?

Little Robin often sits on top of the coop or somewhere in the run while I'm letting the girls and boy out too.

I might sometimes pretend I'm Snow White in the forest with all the birds and animals skipping around me...

Magicpaintbrush · 28/02/2017 20:38

Yes, I chat to the collared doves on our bird table and they seem to be strangely interested in me and listen to what I am saying. They also try to attract my attention through the kitchen window when the bird table is empty. I can see these birds being very easy to domesticate in the right circumstances. They are adorable.

We have a family of 3 squirrels that run along the back fence every day, several times and I always say good morning mr/mrs squirrel, enjoy your breakfast/lunch!

We have judgy blackbird here. He sits in the same spot staring though the living room window for most of the day. Judging. I can see him doing it. Especially if the DC have been watching telly for a while. They are called Mr and Mrs Judgy Blackbird. Although he's not so perfect. I saw him having a right row with two other blackbirds the other day, while his Mrs Blackbird was squawking like she was on Jeremy Kyle.

"One morning I was walking past the field (the gate, our usual meeting point, was at the far end) and there was no sign of her, so I called out "Good morning, Miss Piggy" not expecting a reaction, but at least I hadn't ignored my friend. Well, she came running out of her house and bounded to the gate to make sure she could get her morning scratch! I've never seen a full-sized pig move so fast, and the fact she went to where I would be rather than where I was just then astounded me."

" did miss her when she left."

I have a robin I speak to - even if I'm inside and see him through the window.

LouisevilleLlama · 28/02/2017 23:35

My nan somehow had tame foxes come to her every couple days she used to talk to

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 01/03/2017 00:05

We too take simple pleasure in watching the seasons change and putting feed and water out for blackbirds, sparrows and assorted company.

When relocating I tentatively mentioned I had liked feeding the wild birds in our old garden to the new owners. They very kindly said they loved putting out birdfood and absolutely intended to do this, so that softened the wrench of moving.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 01/03/2017 00:14

SirJohn and Chardonnay. I discovered how my blackbirds love sultanas when I crumbled some stale scones for them - they definitely picked out the fruit! I probably go through a kilo a week - but only cost about 85p per 500g for the basics ones, worth every penny for the enjoyment!
My birds are also rather partial to a bit of hard cheese.
Interestingly the robin in my garden won't touch the sultanas though. I only ever see the blackbirds eating them ( and the big fat wood pigeons).

beebeecee · 01/03/2017 00:17

Thank you for this thread!

I LOVE birdsong and miss it so much now that I live in the city. 😔

But feeling the love vicariously Smile

I just put out some raisins and brushed the dog outside because Mr and Mrs Blackbird have been round for soft furnishings.

HumpMeBogart · 01/03/2017 10:47

This thread has made me so happy! And also woken up my desire to move out of London and live in a beautiful village somewhere. been watching a lot of Miss Marple recently

Ifonlyiweretaller · 01/03/2017 13:09

I do hope yours like the sultanas too Chardonnay! I like the 'soft furnishings' comment - I always put the fluff from my tumble dryer out for them as well as I imagine it makes nice soft bedding for the nests.

LondonHuffyPuffy · 01/03/2017 16:36

Although I live in London, there is a canal and a couple of lakes near us and we are also very close to the Thames and a nature reserve, so there's a lot of wildlife near us. I regularly see ducks, geese, swans, moorhens and coots as well as more usual garden birds. I converse (quietly) with all of them.

My favourite though is the most majestic heron. He (I think it's a he?) has two or three preferred fishing spots. We have an understanding. as long as I stand very, very still and don't make a show of him, he will let me watch him.

Cottongusset · 01/03/2017 16:41

Love this thread. I smile at all dogs that I meet and chat if I get the chance, same with cats. I adore all animals. I thank all flowers that I have in the house and garden when they have gone over for giving me the best of their beautiful lives.

SecretWitch · 01/03/2017 16:42

There some lovely cows I greet each morning on my way to work. An ancient tree I pass is always saluted with " Hello tree". I like feeling connected to nature.

skerrywind · 01/03/2017 17:21

Lots of birds here- I live surrounded by native woodland.

My faourite is an owl who sits on a tree near my bedroom window and hoots me lullabies all through the night. I find the call very soothing.

LornaMumsnet · 01/03/2017 17:27

YANBU

I love birds.

The office regularly hears of my bird obsessed related shenanigans.

We've got a lovely big tree in our garden - perfect for feathery visitors.

AugustRose · 01/03/2017 17:47

YANBU at all, I talk to the birds all the time. Usually the jackdaws who squawk at me while I'm putting food out, they can be a bit greedy.

daisychain it was at the end of January, you missed it sorry.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 01/03/2017 17:52

Here's my dude from the garden. Hatched last year, nesting again this year. Smile

skerry owls are very special. A few years ago when it was very cold we were lucky enough to see the barn owl in the daytime, he/she landed on a tree stump in the garden, so beautiful.

My mum used to have a little robin who came in the house to feed. If she was upstairs he would fly by the window until she came down then hop into the kitchen when she opened the door.

For years we had a blackbird in the garden who had white feathers in his tail.
