To say hello to a blackbird every evening and feel lovely about it

badonkydonk · 27/02/2017 18:20

Every evening at dusk, there is a beautiful blackbird singing its tuneful little heart out just behind my house. Same tree, and same time (later and later as the nights get longer). I just happened to notice him a few nights in row but I actively stand outside to hear it now.

The latest development is that I actually address him as Mr Blackbird (maybe Mrs Blackbird but I don't like to pry), say good evening to him and tell him how lovely he is (may have even asked him if he had a good day tonight!)

Does anyone else say hello to random things and get an overbearing sense of warmth from it?

Saw a Barn Owl on the way home from work the other night and it lifted my spirits so much. One of my favourite birds and there he was sat on a fence next to the petrol station.

I say hello to the fox with the limp most nights when he walks through our garden

So glad I am not alone in appreciating the lovely quirks of wildlife. I am slightly gutted I need to wait until tomorrow until I can hear his lovely tunes tomorrow.

He now has a name "Feodor" as in Feodor Chaliapin - I am not an opera buff but a quick google led me to the name and it fits. I imagine he is quite a dramatic bird.

God help me on Wednesday when I am in London (currently NW England) and I'll miss him as I wont be home till gone 7.

Love hearing the tales of the wonderful creatures that come and visit us all.

crazymissdaisy Yes! exactly. I can regain my demure, women about town appearance but rush home to hear a blackbird belt out some tunes!

Pfft.

The only birds we get in our garden are seagulls- and the things I mutter out the window to them are not suitable for posting pre-watershed.

KurriKurri Love it! "Mrs Tatty and Fat Boy"

Ah! I've got a lovely little robin that lives in my front hedge. I get a boost when I see him in the morning on the way to my car. He's lived there years.

I've also got a little family of ladybirds on my back window. There's even a black one with red spots. They seem so rare these days that I feel lucky when I spot them.

bertsdinner · 27/02/2017 19:11

Lovely thread, I love the sound of blackbirds singing. Ive got a sparrow that sings on top of a tall conifer at the moment, not very tunefully but I like to see him. He was really giving it his all over the weekend.
I get a robin following me when I garden, I went to put the bin out on Sunday and he flew down to watch.

Hidingtonothing · 27/02/2017 19:16

We get lots of birds in our garden (despite not having feeders because of a multitude of cat visitors) and I talk to them all. Today I've said hello to the biggest pigeon I've ever seen, a pair of gorgeous magpies and Mr and Mrs blackbird who come most days. Robins are my favourite and I see them fairly often, always feel strangely honoured when they deign to visit.

daisychain01 · 27/02/2017 19:19

What a lovely bunch of twitchers we are 🐦🦉

HemanOrSheRa · 27/02/2017 19:27

This is a lovely thread Smile. I say hello to birds, butterflies and lovely fuzzy bumblebees. We had a lovely robin in our garden but our neighbour cut the bush where it's nest was Sad. It disappeared and although it was years ago I've still not quite forgiven him. It was there for years before they arrived, or possibly it's offspring? I believe they return to their nests year on year.

I also say hello to cats and dogs when I'm out and about. In fact that is one of the best parts of my job. I work in the community visiting human beings but love all the animals I meet.

Autumnchill · 27/02/2017 19:35

I haven't had a garden for 19 years and whilst current one is a building site in the process of being turned into my haven, I get visited most Saturday mornings by a pair of Goldfinches and about 8 Long tailed tits (my favourite). First time I saw them in the tree at the end of the garden I just smiled.

I love weekends when I get to sit in silence and watch the birds in the garden

badonkydonk · 27/02/2017 20:18

Heman Yes! Bee's are the loveliest beings (pun not intended) around and I often sing a 'buzz buzz' song around them. Think buzz buzz here, buzz buzz there and and a couple of tra la las (and I hate musicals)

I was on the phone to my DH last night and noticed something wandering across one of our tables.....I hung up on him to rescue the ladybird that had strolled in to put her outside on a lovely leafy plant.......and may have stood watching her for longer than I consider normal.

I then rang DH back and made excuse about poor phone signal....

I love heron and saw one today, absolutely frozen into pointed hunting position on the grassy area near the loch. I stood and watched, amazed at how motionless he was, and then he struck....And a wee brown furry beast met a swift end!
My mother has a fabulous sparrowhawk who visits her very small garden to feast on the sparrows who live in the hedge. We all him Captain Jack.
Apologies for rather gruesome post. I like the snowdrops and crocuses too......

bobthebuddha · 27/02/2017 20:34

"a Robin was a sign someone was watching over you from above"

I like that idea; whenever we go up to my Dad's and go on our usual country walk, a robin always pops up in the same spot and follows us for a bit. Must be my Mum Smile

bobthebuddha · 27/02/2017 20:36

..and when I (occasionally these days) wobble home from a night out at 2am, there'll always be a blackbird singing his heart out on our road. It's a lovely thing to have in the heart of the Smoke!

CaoNiMa · 27/02/2017 20:38

Aww I wish I had a blackbird!

I have a resident magpie on my terrace, and silly superstition requires that I give it the full salute every time it catches my eye.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 27/02/2017 20:39

Whilst herons are impressive, Mr B**tard Heron (as we know him) who visits our pond is not. He has speared and wounded a couple of our fish, and managed to get one out through the netting somehow, but as it was too big for him to get down his neck he abandoned it on the lawn! Horrid to see...
The sparrowhawk visits occasionally but I don't actually see him often - usually just the remains of a big fat woodpigeon strewn across the garden.
We have a lovely shy little wren that lives up the driveway too, you wouldn't believe how loudly such a tiny thing can sign!
There are definitely more annoyingly noisy magpies and crows than there used to be though...not a very tuneful song.

camelfinger · 27/02/2017 20:39

The sound of a blackbird singing its heart reminds me of this time of year as a child, where the evenings were getting lighter and it felt like the whole summer was ahead of you. A really nice feeling. Good thread.

HellonHeels · 27/02/2017 20:39

Fab thread! I always say hello to birds. Crows can be very up for a chat. I have a blackbird pair and two robins who visit I feed them every day and get very excited when I see them. DBoyfriend has hedgehogs visit his garden and we both get excited abut those too.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 27/02/2017 20:44

I have a little fat robin always loitering about.
He comes all the way to the kitchen door.

No goldfinches yet this year.

Yanbu. I aaddress ours as Mr / Mrs Blackbird.

You should listen to me when I'm out running and greeting the birds, squirrels, cats as I pass Blush.

RortyCrankle · 27/02/2017 21:20

That's lovely. When I draw the curtains at the french doors, I always say good morning to the robin who sits about an inch from the glass waiting for me to throw out seeds and nuts. He fights off the sparrows until he has eaten and then often goes and has a bath in the big tray of water I put out. He is adorable - actually all the birds are lovely but he is special Smile

ThunderClouds · 27/02/2017 22:24

There was a lovely little family of goldcrests on our garage roof that I'd always say hi to! I was really sad when they left their nest.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 27/02/2017 22:42

Since pokemon go came out, I've been doing a lap of the woods in the mornings to go around the pokestops. It's been great going in there even on the mankiest days of winter, and in recent weeks the birdsong has really livened up. Smile

Last week I was running along a disused railway a few fields away from the housing estate and a bird of prey flew overhead. I'm not sure what it was, but its wingspan was impressive.
