To think the shop assistant was a bit harsh about my dc stealing.

We were out shopping at the weekend and I went into a shop with dd in the buggy . The shop has quite narrow aisles and the one I needed had a pillar in the middle so I parked dd up at the end and nipped down the aisle to get what I wanted, paid and we left. Yesterday morning I was cleaning the bottom of the buggy and I found a lipstick and two nail varnishes. Dd must have reached out from under the rain cover and picked them off the shelf whilst I was down the aisle! Obviously I'm mortified!

So I went back to the shop today with the stuff, offered to pay or return it and apologised profusely. The woman was awful to me. What kind of person let's their kids steal... I really should have checked before I left etc. She said they couldn't take the lipstick and nail varnish back in case I'd tampered with them. I said that I would pay for them so she scanned them through, I paid and I went to pick them up when she said that there was no way I could have them, she said 'did you really expect to be able get away with stealing them then get to keep them!'.

Now I didn't go in expecting to receive my mother of the year certificate but AIBU to think that I didn't deserve to be humiliated either?

OP, if you're on Twitter and Facebook please put this on Superdrug's pages. You should get a response quite soon.

IvorHughJarrs · 27/02/2017 18:49

I would write or e-mail and complain as I'm sure that would be against company policy. She should not treat you like that when you have done the decent thing

Smurfy23 · 27/02/2017 18:49

YANBU

What a power-tripping cow. Definitely need to complain. She needs to get over herself

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 27/02/2017 18:49

And the over reaction of the century goes to.............Shop worker.
Mind you. You've probably got to take some of the blame. That's what you get for being honest (Tongue in cheeks obviously.

WaitrosePigeon · 27/02/2017 18:50

What a fucking bitch!

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 27/02/2017 18:51

That is disgusting, you really must complain OP.

Champers4Pampers · 27/02/2017 18:52

YANBU

This is a horrible way to be treated when you were trying to do doing the right thing. A lot of people would of just put it down to experience and ignored it rather than going back to pay.

BEWARE- I have a feeling the DM are going to pick up on this thread.

Serialweightwatcher · 27/02/2017 18:53

I think we should all tweet superdrug .... just wrong to basically reprimand someone for doing the decent thing. Yes there are plenty of shoplifters but they don't usually go back to pay - ludicrous

pyjamaarama1 · 27/02/2017 18:53

You were a lot more honest that a lot of people would be.
You didn't deserve that at all.

daisychain01 · 27/02/2017 18:53

Perhaps on this one occasion, it wouldn't be a bad thing Champers -

One thing the DM is good for is a sabre-rattling campaign!

Isabellaandthepotofbasil · 27/02/2017 18:55

Thank you for your replies. Not bothered about the money I'm just relieved I wasn't being ridiculous! The assistant just seemed very angry and exasperated so maybe they get a lot of stuff stolen.

OP posts:
Armadillostoes · 27/02/2017 18:55

Another voice in the complain camp. You paid for the items and the shop assistant stole them! Neither you nor your baby did anything wrong.

Serialweightwatcher · 27/02/2017 18:57

I'm sure they do get a lot of stuff stolen OP, but that's why she should have thanked you for your honesty

JeffreySadsacIsUnwell · 27/02/2017 18:58

For once, it wouldn't be a bad thing if the DM picked up on it!

I'd definitely complain to head office - one of their employees has stolen from you.

FWIW, when DS managed to nick a small plastic duck from Sainsburys and stuff it up his jumper aged about 13 months, I went back the next day to pay. The manager thanked me, refused to take any money and gave it to DS. He did recognise me as a regular customer though, and knew me by name!

Astro55 · 27/02/2017 18:58

Maybe she does get a lot of stolen stuff - which suggests stuff that doesn't get returned - takes guts to take back something a toddler took

leghoul · 27/02/2017 19:01

That's ridiculous. Theft can't happen if the child is under 10 but the fact when you realised and went back (I did this once with nappies but that was my error as I put them on the buggy, genuine mistake, walked out, realised and went back in to a till and paid) she then made you pay but refused to hand over the goods and added abuse for good measure when it's already embarassing- horrible

123yourusername · 27/02/2017 19:02

So you let the shop assistant steal from you and left the shop without them 🤔?

tinglyfing · 27/02/2017 19:02

What???!!! Fuming for you op. Sorry but I would have absolutely lost the plot with her if she had spoken to me like that. Go back, get her name and make sure she knows you're not taking that absolutely disgusting behaviour. Who the hell does she think she is??!!!!!

AnoiseAnnoysanOyster · 27/02/2017 19:05

I used to have a Saturday job in Superdrug and tons of stuff gets stolen. However the shop assistant was a dick and I would be complaining if I were you OP.

fuckingwall · 27/02/2017 19:05

Did you get a receipt?

paxillin · 27/02/2017 19:05

Tweet it, Superdrug will send you a year's supply of lipsticks and an apology.

Emmageddon · 27/02/2017 19:06

My 15 month old son nicked a hideous purple cardigan from Debenhams once, I found it when I was lifting his buggy onto the train home. The funny thing was, the alarms had gone off when I left the shop, and the security guard checked my shopping bag and my receipt and concluded it must be the alarm being faulty. Neither of us noticed DS happily playing with the security tag on the cardigan.

Anyway, I returned the item, and was greeted with nothing but kindness from the shop staff, and a smidgeon of embarrassed laughter from the security guard.

I can't believe a major chain like Superdrug would have such an odd policy for the return of inadvertently taken items.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 27/02/2017 19:06

That's the problem though, Jeffrey.
The DM don't pounce when you want them to

GatoradeMeBitch · 27/02/2017 19:07

So, you paid for the items that you took back, and then she wouldn't even let you have them?!

If it was a chain store, write and make a formal complaint.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 27/02/2017 19:08

YNBU! If you'd intended to steal it you wouldn't have bloody taken it back!

Hope you complained. Brew
