Pancakes for tea - AIBU or DH?!

It's Pancake Day on Tuesday! Bloody love Pancake Day.
Although, who's BU?
I think stacks of pancakes for tea on Pancake Day (dinner to the Southerner lot) with loads of different toppings, fruit and fillings is perfectly adequate.
DH thinks that's not a substantial tea, and they're perfectly good as a starter but it's not a main meal for the kids.
Am I unreasonable to think "Shurrup, it's Pancake Day!" and continue to fill us all with pancakes or do you do something else as well?

I guess he could add crispy bacon for protein.we love pancakes here. That's all we will have. In fact it's a regular favorite even when not pancake day.

SongBirdsKeepSinging · 27/02/2017 03:38

YANBU I grew up having only sweet pancakes on pancake day and I do the same now. It's only one day a year and I have such lovely memories of it growing up.

oobedobe · 27/02/2017 03:58

YANBU we did this tonight, as DH is away and I am busy Tuesday evening. My DDs eat loads of fruit, veg and a balanced diet for 99% of the year, pancake day we just eat crepe style pancakes usually with Nutella or lemon/sugar - I like savoury they are not bothered. It is one night people.

During the year we often have American-style fat pancakes for brunch, but that is entirely different and involves maple syrup, sausages etc.

Also eggs/milk=protein
Flour=carbs therefore pancakes are (almost) a balanced meal Grin

Juanbablo · 27/02/2017 07:10

Pancake day means pancakes for dinner! I usually do ham and cheese ones followed by whatever obscene sweet toppings the children want.

00100001 · 27/02/2017 07:21

We have pancakes for dinner every other week or so.

heap and filling!

user1483387154 · 27/02/2017 07:22

Oh dear, your OH would hate it over here. We have a 3 course pancake meal
starter: Pancake soup (sounds disgusting but is delicious) its basically a bouillion with small stripes of pancake in and some herbs on top
main course: savoury pancakes, scrambled eggs, ham, cheese and tomatoes with mustard and mayo.
Desert: Sweet pancakes with icecream, maple syrup, fruit, nutella etc

Ifailed · 27/02/2017 07:24

we used to make loads of batter, then use some to make toad-in-the-hole as a main, the rest went to old school pancakes with lemon juice and sugar. Can't remember anyone complaining of hunger.

Eolian · 27/02/2017 07:25

I'm with your dh. It would genuinely not occur to me that pancake day meant having just sweet pancakes for dinner! If I were going to do that, I'd definitely do French-style savoury pancakes as a main course (with salad etc), then sweet pancakes for pudding.

You are correct OP.

When i grew up we just had them for dinner and nothing else. We also never did any fillings/toppings other than lemon and sugar. One glorious year i ate 27 pancakes.

Sadly my dc hate them. So i have to cook a normal dinner for them and just make some to myself and DH later.

contractor6 · 27/02/2017 07:38

Dh working late tomorrow so he has no say. First time ill have done pancakes for dd, so obviously will have to make loads to try all the different toppings Grin

triangularchocolate · 27/02/2017 07:40

Pancakes for tea is compulsory in this house! I grew up in a no puddings or fizzy drinks house with sweets once a week but we got pancakes for tea on pancake day. Probably why I love them so much Smile. I used to have savoury pancakes to start (spinach, mushroom and cheese) but not bothering this year - just going straight for the lemon and sugar classic (but will try to stop at 2).

ElinorRigby · 27/02/2017 07:41

Buckwheat flour also makes excellent pancakes. (You can do half wheat flour, half buckwheat.)

maddiemookins16mum · 27/02/2017 07:41

YANBU, one day a year won't hurt. YABU in assuming all southerners say dinner though 😊.

HSMMaCM · 27/02/2017 07:43

Pancake pizzas followed by pancakes with any junk you can find in the house for the rest of mains/pudding.

whattodowiththepoo · 27/02/2017 07:46

We had pancakes 3 times yesterday, high light of the year so far.

Dumdedumdedum · 27/02/2017 07:50

When I was a child, we'd have a normal meal followed by pancakes with lemon and sugar on Shrove Tuesday. (Don't forget the pancakes on Jif Lemon Day!) When I became a parent, I started making savoury pancakes (cheese and ham, spinach and cheese, mushroom in bechamel sauce, wrapped up and covered in a coating sauce with lots of cheese on top, baked in the oven till cheese bubbling brown) as the main course, followed by pancakes with whatever sweet topping anyone fancies (Nutella is the big favourite in our house, though I like maple syrup and ice-cream!).
Enjoy! Oh, so, yes, it is your DH who is being unreasonable if you intend to have pancakes for both courses Wink

livingthegoodlife · 27/02/2017 07:52

Just pancakes for dinner here with lemon juice and sugar a fruit. Nothing else! It's only one dinner and won't harm!

WhoKn0wsWhereTheTimeG0es · 27/02/2017 08:05

Well, I'm not changing the habits of a lifetime, pancakes will only be for pudding here tomorrow, that's how I was brought up and what we've always done. Wouldn't seem like such a treat if we had already had them for main course (we don't do puddings normally).

Pengweng · 27/02/2017 08:11

DH is being unreasonable!

I will be making pancakes for dinner (though i make scotch pancakes as I can not do the really thin ones no matter how much i try) along with bacon and scrambled eggs. Mmmmmmmmmmm and then maybe one with ice cream for pudding.

glitterazi · 27/02/2017 08:16

I've never had a savoury pancake we usually go straight for the sweet dessert type ones Blush
Although I now feel the urge to make that cheese one mentioned upthread as well. OMG.

I am sort of with your dh in that couldn't picture just sweet pancakes for dinner so we have pancakes for breakfast (drop scone style yoghurt ones) after school snack (used to be lunch before dc at school) and dinner-
have done green eggs and ham (pesto in pancakes scrambled egg and slice of ham) and also an italian inspired sort of pancake lasagne- which was fab but quite a lot of work ..
before heading to the crepe style which are now returning to just lemon sugar possibly one honey & whipped cream as a change..

Gazelda · 27/02/2017 08:17

I'm introducing DD (8) to the delights of Findus Crispy Pancakes, and might chuck a few cherry toms on her plate for health benefits. Then we'll have a stack of regular pancakes with loads of topping choices. Then she's going to Brownies for a pancake party.
Back to the 10-a-day on Weds.
