Round at the MIL & FIL visiting and DH left a tub of babys formula on the kitchen side when he made a bottle up for baby. Few hours go by and it's time for us too leave. I notice the baby formula isn't in the bag, ask DH where it is. He goes and searches the kitchen and comes out confused that it wasn't in there. Me, DH and MIL spend the next few minutes searching with no luck. MIL asks FIL has he saw the baby formula, he responds don't think so. We say are you sure and describe the box. He tells us
" what the empty one you left on the side? I took it outside with the rest of the recycling "

DH told his dad that it wasn't empty, how did he not notice when he lifted it up. His dad just started muttering too himself. Poor MIL went outside to see if she could salvage it but FIL must have pushed the boxes down as you do too make more room, so a squished formula box with a lot of it leaked it.

MIL is mortified and has offered to give us money too replace it, we have refused as it wasn't done purposley, just a " oops sorry silly me " of FIL would do. But apparently our fault for putting the formula on the side. Now we have the fun of tracking down baby formula on a Sunday evening when supermarkets and chemists are closed. Thank god for corner shops and garages being open!

AIBU too think FIL was being a bit giddy with his recycling or was it out fault for leaving it on the kitchen side?

side note - MIL manages too contain her recycling urges when it comes to DC baby formula box

Yes I would advise to have a spare tin in the cupboard at all times

You don't know what could happen. You could drop the tin for example

Desperina · 26/02/2017 18:28

You have to your name literally the formula on your back? Hmm

The formula that your baby needs to live? Hmm

There is either more to this I.e. You are having a bad day and this was your Final Straw or.. well.. HmmHmmHmm

Artandco · 26/02/2017 18:39

It's hardly bulk buying to have a tin in use and a spare. What if baby or you were ill the next few days, you would need spare at home wouldn't you?

BastardBloodAndSand · 26/02/2017 18:42

Is it just me who'd have plucked it out of the recycling then ?? Blush

ArriettyClock1 · 26/02/2017 18:42

Meh

Small mistake. Massive over reaction.

Believeitornot · 26/02/2017 18:43

Do you have spare food in the cupboard for yourselves?

If so, why not for your baby? Confused

squiggleirl · 26/02/2017 18:44

Teeny tiny question?

What would you have done had the formula lid come off/opened as you travelled home?

FIL's over-zealous tidying aside aside, it's not the best idea to rely on one opened box of formula surviving transportation between houses, is it?

SuperFlyHigh · 26/02/2017 18:46

Bastard apparently formula tin was "squished and a lot leaked out of it".

MsJamieFraser · 26/02/2017 18:46

I think it's just one of those things, it was accidental.

welshmist · 26/02/2017 18:47

Gosh as a GM I kept formula and spare foodstuffs for grandson. You never knew when they would be needed. I threw out the milk formula when he went onto ordinary milk. I still keep emergency meal stuff just in case. I would certainly have spare milk for my own child. I am a worrier and always thought supposing I became ill or DC did and I could not leave the house so needed stuff urgently.

LagunaBubbles · 26/02/2017 18:47

Highinthesky - bit of a stereotypical over reaction there "men are selfish".....the men in your life may well be but you're talking rubbish.

RainbowBriteRules · 26/02/2017 18:54

YANBU OP. Round here nothing is open at the moment that would sell formula. Possibly one of the supermarkets about 40 mins drive away but I would need to check. So that would be over an hour round trip. A hassle I would not need with a hungry baby. Also they may not sell the specific brand I would need.

DD2 took ages to settle on the right formula.

Once when she was a baby we ran out of formula on a Sunday. DH had to do an hour and a half round trip (we were visiting relatives at the time) to find some. The wrong sort but at least we could feed her. After that I had lots of spares everywhere!

khajiit13 · 26/02/2017 19:00

Well he wouldn't do it on purpose would he? A mistake but I understand why you're frustrated

GogoGobo · 26/02/2017 19:02

YABU. It was a mistake. Perhaps you are easily irritated.

SacharissaCrisplock · 26/02/2017 19:07

YANBU. If we're visiting the in-laws we tend to take the whole tin with us in case we stay longer or anything.

To those saying you should have a backup, well, yes, but our backup is at home so not much use if we're out and about. Essentially taking the whole tin is taking backup in case more feeds are needed.

You can't take backups of backups or it starts getting silly and you've got half of Sainsbury's in the car for each trip out.

Inertia · 26/02/2017 19:18

Doesn't he wash out recyclable containers before he puts them out for collection?

Patchouli666 · 26/02/2017 19:22

Could he have been trying to make a point about tidiness? We've had people with babies over and the mess they make while washing a bottle -water sprayed all over worktop and not wiped up. Dribbles of both powder and milk near the bottle and container of baby milk powder. The powder on the worktop then goes sticky. It's not wiped up. Steriliser left out and lid and all innards all over top. Then baby needs a banana etc, skin just left on top with all the rest of it etc. Weve got kids but it drove us mad!

Chewbecca · 26/02/2017 19:25

Not a big deal or worthy of your annoyance IMO

DizzyFizzyLizzy · 26/02/2017 19:30

I'm with you OP. We bought a tin of formula as we required. It is too expensive to have back up tins.

However, I did buy loads of the ready made cartons of formula for the cupboard. They were great. Took a stash when we were out and about and never had to take the tin of formula with us (also meant we had a wee backup in case we unexpectedly ran out, but that never happened).

When DD was tiny, I also found the ready made cartons helped with the constipation that was caused by the powder (far better than fannying around with cooled boiled water, as suggested by the HV). I'm pregnant with DC2 and this time around I'm going to use both powder and ready made formula regularly to try to minimise the constipation.

lottieandmia · 26/02/2017 19:30

That would annoy me too but try living with my mum. I have known her to throw away

£250 in cash
My husband's birth certificate
Many, many important letters and other documents

She does not look and she doesn't learn from her mistakes either Angry

GabsAlot · 26/02/2017 19:35

they do realise theyve contaminated the whole recycling now-youre meant to rinse eveyrthing out first

RupertsMum2 · 26/02/2017 19:38

Ah how I remember sitting crying outside Tesco, 21 years ago, waiting for it to open and then realising the clocks had changed and it would be another hour. This after running out of formula. I always made sure I had a spare tin after that. These things happen OP. I hope you found some.

NotaSnowflake · 26/02/2017 20:00

When my child was a baby and we went out anywhere or to stay anywhere we just took ready mixed cartons of formula. The vitamin C content is higher in ready mixed formula too. And in the case of Aptamil at least, it tends to dislodge any 'constipation' that baba may have! (Midwife gave me that tip!) Smile

NotaSnowflake · 26/02/2017 20:01

Sounds like Hipp Organic if it was in a box? Not easy to find at convenience stores to be fair

Artandco · 26/02/2017 20:08

I don't use undertand the ' no spares it's expensive comment'

A) it's not being used any quicker so same cost overall

B) if a tin goes flying you a) have same cost of replacing b) now have no food left to give baby

The thought of there not being back up food at home for a small baby gives me the jitters. People must knock or spill stuff occasionally ie at 3am.
I breastfed, boobs there, don't run out. But I still kept a botttle and a few pre made formulas just in case. If I had been taken ill say 10pm on a Sunday, Dh would have been left with little options to feed a hungry baby. It's part of being a parent.
