Round at the MIL & FIL visiting and DH left a tub of babys formula on the kitchen side when he made a bottle up for baby. Few hours go by and it's time for us too leave. I notice the baby formula isn't in the bag, ask DH where it is. He goes and searches the kitchen and comes out confused that it wasn't in there. Me, DH and MIL spend the next few minutes searching with no luck. MIL asks FIL has he saw the baby formula, he responds don't think so. We say are you sure and describe the box. He tells us
" what the empty one you left on the side? I took it outside with the rest of the recycling "

DH told his dad that it wasn't empty, how did he not notice when he lifted it up. His dad just started muttering too himself. Poor MIL went outside to see if she could salvage it but FIL must have pushed the boxes down as you do too make more room, so a squished formula box with a lot of it leaked it.

MIL is mortified and has offered to give us money too replace it, we have refused as it wasn't done purposley, just a " oops sorry silly me " of FIL would do. But apparently our fault for putting the formula on the side. Now we have the fun of tracking down baby formula on a Sunday evening when supermarkets and chemists are closed. Thank god for corner shops and garages being open!

AIBU too think FIL was being a bit giddy with his recycling or was it out fault for leaving it on the kitchen side?

side note - MIL manages too contain her recycling urges when it comes to DC baby formula box

I would be annoyed. But then my FIL would have done it on purpose because it hadn't been put away after it was used.

If it wasn't on purpose it's just one of those annoying things that happen

theBaldSoprano · 26/02/2017 17:50

It doesn't matter what decade you're in if you're not feeding the baby yourself, and formula is important, you make sure you have backup boxes

You might, but others like me don't bother unless I am travelling. I take my chances about the zombie apocalypse.

KungFuPandaWorksOut16 · 26/02/2017 17:50

I don't think I over reacted. I didn't have a go at FIL, I was sulking whilst tracking down formula. I wouldn't dream of just throwing something out if it wasn't mine. I'm entitled too a little moan. And yes eustace that was part of my point.
Oh definitley don't think FIL did it maliciously at all.

3littlepigs I shouldn't have too bulk buy a product in on the off chance somebody accidentally bins a box.

diddl · 26/02/2017 17:50

You'd at least give the box a shake, wouldn't you?

Not sure if I would have packed it away or not after use or left it out in case it was needed again.

He does sound very over zealous!

I really thought that formula milk only came in tins with a plastic lid!

novemberontrumpwatch · 26/02/2017 17:50

Which formula? They sell the popular ones in every Tesco Metro.

MoonfaceAndSilky · 26/02/2017 17:52

Men are typically selfish. As long as they get fed the rest can go to hell.

Slight overreactionConfused It was a box of formula and he didn't do it on purpose.

ScarletForYa · 26/02/2017 17:52

I'd be annoyed too OP. What a waste.

On a side note, where do you live that Supermarkets aren't open on a Sunday? Confused

KungFuPandaWorksOut16 · 26/02/2017 17:53

gytr mature.

scarlet I live in the NW, most supermarkets close at 4 where I am.

omnishamblesssssssssssssss · 26/02/2017 17:53

Surely you just gave FIL the name of the formula/cash and sent him off in a wild formula goose chase

MintChocAddict · 26/02/2017 17:54

Eh? You started your post at 5.15 on a Sunday and you're upset about tracking down formula when everything is shut. Just stop at a shop. Confused 24hr supermarket opening or at least until 9/10pm is everywhere OP.
Do you live on the moon?
And I'm sure your FIL didn't mean it. Sheesh!

It was an accident. They offered the money to replace it. YABU.

I wouldn't have left it out on the side, tbh.

Soubriquet · 26/02/2017 17:57

There's no 24 hour shop around here

If you needed something you either have to travel or wait until tomorrow

Everything apart from pubs is now shut

KungFuPandaWorksOut16 · 26/02/2017 17:58

mint read further up. My supermarkets near me close at 4
Where did I say he did it on purpose?

My mil threw out the envelope containing our baby's scan pics. They were in an envelope marked 'my new baby sister' in hot pink so it wasn't exactly anonymous!
Luckily we have a second set and that was the set the private scan gave our DD as a keep sake but I am pretty annoyed. She swears blind she didn't but they were on a table, she tidied and then they were gone.

minisoksmakehardwork · 26/02/2017 17:58

Your fil was daft, and could have at least been a little sheepish. But tbh you're even more insane for not having another tub of formula in store. That's just basic common sense, at least in our house it was. One open, one (or more with dts) in store. When you get near the bottom of open box or open stored box, buy another. So the cycle continues. And it is possible to get tubs to decant formula in. With dts I had 2 3 compartment dispensers and 2 cartons each in the changing bag for emergencies.

AlmaMartyr · 26/02/2017 18:03

There's no 24hr shop around here, everything closes at 4 on a Sunday. It's a 40 minute drive to anything that's open. We don't all live in major cities.

OneWithTheForce · 26/02/2017 18:07

3littlepigs I shouldn't have too bulk buy a product in on the off chance somebody accidentally bins a box.

Bulk buy? Confused you just keep one extra tin in the house. Not exactly bulk buying.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 26/02/2017 18:07

My baby was on hipp organic (as the more popular ones didn't agree with him). That wasn't available at petrol stations and corner shops.

Yanbu op. He doesn't sound at all sorry.

novemberontrumpwatch · 26/02/2017 18:12

can you get amazon now?

SuperFlyHigh · 26/02/2017 18:15

Mountain out of a molehill. We all mistakes and it's only baby formula not bloody caviar so easy to pick up in most shops and for a reasonable amount.

ScarletForYa · 26/02/2017 18:15

Things close at 4 on a Sunday in England? Shock (or just parts of it?)

I never knew that.

SuperFlyHigh · 26/02/2017 18:18

Scarlet my local Sainsbos both close at 5pm on Sunday's but even in back of beyond out of town place near Bath (not in Bath) their Co-op/spar etc is open til at least 8pm even on a Sunday.

diddl · 26/02/2017 18:22

Sunday opening-what's that??
Still a rarity here in Germany.

Batteriesallgone · 26/02/2017 18:22

He is totally unreasonable for not ensuring the recycling is clean, dry, and collapsed as far as possible.

He should have checked the box was empty. It's the kind of shit my dad used to do until I just lost it one day and said the general rule is not that his stuff = worthy, everything else = irrelevant bollocks that if it gets in his manly way can be readily disposed of. I said if he didn't want me in his fucking house don't be sneakily disrespectful about it by chucking out my stuff just be honest and say I'm not worthy and not welcome. Ok I overreacted BlushSmile but any who has felt the cumulative effect of shit like this probably knows where I was coming from with my rant!
