To ask if 35 really is middle aged

Colleague described a new worker who is around 35 as middle aged the other day. I was rather shocked I'm 45 and consider myself middle aged and 35 young.

I think 0-30 you're young
31-60 middle aged
61+ you're old
I am 37 so middle aged. Don't feel it but certainly look it after a night of no sleep 😉

Libitina · 26/02/2017 20:23

I'm 46 and don't consider myself 'middle-aged' yet. Maybe by the time I'm 55?

donquixotedelamancha · 26/02/2017 20:33

"I'm 50 and I don't consider myself middle-aged at all, or even particularly close to being middle-aged. Maybe 60? But I've friends who are 60+ and I don't even consider them to be middle-aged."

I don't feel fat, unfortunately objective reality disagrees.

thatscottishconfection · 26/02/2017 20:38

Depends, doesn't it? My DH died at 37 so, thankfully unbeknownst to him, was middle aged at 18

twinklefoot · 26/02/2017 20:39

I must admit I am shocked that most people on this thread don't think they are middle-aged at 50! I must inform you most people do see you as middle-aged!Grin

winefortea · 26/02/2017 20:40

When I was 16, 35 was middle-aged. Now I'm in my 40's I'd say definitely not!

Mind you, I'm still waiting to feel like a grown-up!

AWhistlingWoman · 26/02/2017 20:46

I'm 37 and would say I am middle-aged.

If I make it to 70 (and I would consider myself very lucky) I'm just over the midway point Grin

Flowers scottish you just never know do you? Sorry that your DH passed away so young.

RoboticSealpup · 26/02/2017 21:13

Hell no! I turned 35 earlier this year and I don't even have any wrinkles yet.

But it freaked me out a bit the other day when I googled an actor I have a crush on and realised that he played the little boy in the 1999 movie 'Big Daddy' with Adam Sandler. I felt like a dirty old lady. Blush

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 26/02/2017 21:24

I'm getting a scooter for my 36th birthday Grin

I have long hair, original colour.
Occasionally get IDed.
Love literally hanging around in playgrounds (although I did pull my shoulder on monkey bars at 35)
Enjoying the 90s fashion revival so I can wear my teenage fashions which still fit.

Definitely not middle-aged here!

I don't plan on being middle-aged until my joints give up on camping. Wink

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 26/02/2017 21:24

I'd say so yeah.

haveacupoftea · 26/02/2017 22:18

I think middle aged is like 55-75 and 80+ is older...but not always 'old'.

You're not young after 30 but not middle aged either...IMO

Sallystyle · 26/02/2017 22:25

I am 35. I am not middle aged.

ifcatscouldtalk · 26/02/2017 23:00

I think some people are thinking along the lines of if you act young and are fit and healthy you've not reached middle age. My husband is older than me at 47. He looks young and runs marathons and is very fit, he is still middle aged. I would say around early 40's-50's is middle aged. I'd love to say it's 60 but looking at the maths, how many people live to 120? Middle aged surely means mid way through your life?

ifcatscouldtalk · 26/02/2017 23:18

Scottish sorry about your husband, that is too young. One of the reasons I have no problems with being middle aged when I get to 40 is that it would mean at least I'd live to 80. Of course no one knows. Flowers.

atheistmantis · 27/02/2017 19:48

middle age starts at a year above your own age.

brasty · 27/02/2017 20:03

Middle aged is the middle of your life expectancy. So early 40s.

Elendon · 28/02/2017 07:53

I'm sure that my aunt, uncle and father (brothers and sister) all thought they were not middle aged at 35. All were dead by 70.

On my mum's side, I'm sure she felt middle aged by 45, but she and her sister are still going strong (91 and 88 respectively) and their brother lived post cancer at 50 until 78.
