...and AIBU to do this?

We are on an economy drive. Already we are pretty good but I know we can get better still!

I want to refill the containers with similar but cheaper product - family won't notice, but will piss and moan if the bottle is different. I want to keep morale up.

E.g:

Listerine sensitive clean mint
Laundry powder
Dove men shower creme
Aquafresh kids mouthwash
Fairy liquid

Armani is also a dentist, if I were to pretend I'd probably be an engineer. Or a vet. Can't see why anyone would be pretend to be a dentist. Smile

NoArmaniNoPunani · 26/02/2017 17:32

Apparently vets have over taken us with the highest suicide rates now MrsM.

Mrsmorton · 26/02/2017 17:40

Do we hate them as much as we hate us? I love vets. They're so clever. And ours is handsome.

OpalFruitsMarathonsandSpira · 26/02/2017 18:16

Ah, that makes sense now solo.

Have to watch out in Poundland and similar, often the products are in smaller amounts than other places, so doesn't always come out at a better deal

RandomMess · 26/02/2017 18:35

Lidl ketchup did really well in Which taste tests, even my fussy brood have accepted as a cheap alternative about 50p for a large squeezy bottle full.

KarmaKit · 26/02/2017 18:47

I only use corsodyl mouthwash (or actually the boots own version) when I have an infection, never otherwise. Makes my mouth feel weird afterwards! My teeth and general oral hygiene are fine.

I think I must be the only person on this thread who wouldn't "get away" with all this swapping bottles nonsense. My husband does the shopping with me (we do click and collect and he usually does the clicking bit because I get frustrated with the app). But even if he didn't he would notice if it was just the same bottle/box being refilled. He's not an idiot, or a child. If I thought we were spending too much on branded groceries I would just say "right we'll give this cheaper version a go", I can't see a reasonable person arguing with that.

OpalFruitsMarathonsandSpira · 26/02/2017 18:53

You are just right, Karma kit. Everyone with half a brain has a domestic set up and relationship just like yours. Anyone different is just nonsensical and married to a childish idiot.

Not what I said at all actually but ok! Confused

Lynnm63 · 26/02/2017 19:49

It's usually kids who object as they like the advertised shite. I think I trained mine from an early age as they see the price of things and say loudly 'Mum won't pay THAT much' embarrassing but true.
The thing is if you don't like the swap you can buy the branded one next time. It's not permanent like a tattoo or an amputation!
We don't have a Lidl locally so I shop in Aldi. I have noticed they seem to have very similar items. I find my ds like the Aldi ketchup as much as Heinz.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/02/2017 19:53

I know for a fact that with my lot it's purely psychological - if they think it's not their 'usual' brand then it won't taste right. I tend to test the water first with the cheaper stuff and once I know they will eat it then switch 'publicly'. Otherwise I found that I would switch all the things that I liked and used, and the baby stuff and cleaning stuff, but was still spending a fortune unnecessarily on everyone else's brands. Not really fair. Now we have a mix of cheaper things we use and then a few treats of branded things that are more expensive, I agree with the op that sometimes family members are resistant to change and a bit of sneaky switching is necessary.

My DD swears by Magnum washing up liquid, from Lidl. She says it is just as good, and lasts as long as Fairy.

Janey50 · 02/03/2017 02:37

Sorry! Just checked with DD and she said Magnum is made by Aldi not Lidl.

Dixiestamp · 02/03/2017 04:26

My DH made us all do a blind taste test of tomato ketchup last week- we were all positive we knew which one Heinz was, and preferred if, but it turned out to be the Lidl one!

Astoria7974 · 02/03/2017 07:11

Have you tried Costco? Can usually get some great bargains if you plan - got a massive bottle of Heinz ketchup in Aug last year £2 and it's still going strong.
