...and AIBU to do this?

We are on an economy drive. Already we are pretty good but I know we can get better still!

I want to refill the containers with similar but cheaper product - family won't notice, but will piss and moan if the bottle is different. I want to keep morale up.

E.g:

Listerine sensitive clean mint
Laundry powder
Dove men shower creme
Aquafresh kids mouthwash
Fairy liquid

We have a dental nurse visiting our school kids at the minute, she recommends using a pea sized amount of toothpaste and not rinsing your mouth with water or mouth rinse at all. Supposedly doing this is far better than using mouth rinses, although if your using mouth rinse for gum disease etc this would be different.

HashiAsLarry · 24/02/2017 23:51

hand wash - we don't hand wash a lot.

Obviously we wash Blush

Twiggy71 · 24/02/2017 23:54

Oh and i usely use liquid hand soap in my bathroom but bought a nice bar of soap instead, its lasting for blinking ever Grin

nebulae · 24/02/2017 23:57

It's ridiculous really. I'm sticking with my Asda one and even then I'm only buying it when it's on offer. Cheapskate that I am grin

Another cheapskate here and not afraid to admit it. I swapped the Liz Earle one for the Superdrug versions and I refuse to pay full price for those, I always wait until they're on offer.

I agree with previous comments about Fairy liquid though. I only use Fairy Platinum, everything else I've tried has been a false economy. You can pick up the Platinum one fairly cheap at Home Bargains/Quality Save anyway.

TheFrendo · 24/02/2017 23:59

Use half a tablet in your dishwasher.

Buy a half sack (12.5Kg) of potatoes.

Buy a 10Kg sack of Basmati.

Do not buy (very often, if at all) biscuits, crips, fizzy drinks, fruit juice, reday meals.

OpalFruitsMarathonsandSpira · 25/02/2017 00:02

I boil in the bag for basmati Blush

Aldi's washing up liquid wins all the awards. I only use Tesco's own brands nowadays for washing and cleaning products. Not only are they cheaper, but they don't hurt animals doing unnecessary tests like Fairy and other big brands do.

TheFrendo · 25/02/2017 00:06

crips, reday? Apologies for the obvious typos.

missbishi · 25/02/2017 00:07

Whilst you're at Home Bargains, check out the Nicky loo roll. Great quality.

PigletJohn · 25/02/2017 00:07

Aldi WUL, washing powder and dishwasher tablets are top class. They battle with the expensive ones in every Which test.

raspberryrippleicecream · 25/02/2017 00:13

Second that PigletJohn.

I live in a soft water area and can use half recommend amounts quite happily.

MimsyFluff · 25/02/2017 00:24

I've been using aldis washing liquid for years now. I ran out last week, DH was nipping to the local shop I told him several times to get a bottle of fairy he came home with some cheap brand and it's half used already Angry Hmm

FearMe · 25/02/2017 00:28

You do realise that many own brand products are made by the same company?
Weetabix make their product for everyone for example.
Just replace with aldi products, in my opinion they are far better than any of the main brands.

FearMe · 25/02/2017 00:29

Oh and the blue aldi mouth wash should do it, their premium washing up liquid also.

Sudocreamface · 25/02/2017 00:30

Maybe be careful with mouthwash. I started using it for the first time recently and after a few months noticed tiny brown stains on my teeth that I'd never had before..,,Google told me it was mouthwash wich made sense as it was the only new thing. Mine was cheap mouth wash though.

Lynnm63 · 25/02/2017 00:45

ALDI washing up liquid is great as is there non bio washing powder. They regularly win the Good Housekeeping awards. Nicky loo roll from home bargains is brilliant, I've been buying it for years.

kateandme · 25/02/2017 01:02

if they dont notice do it.if it lasts a couple of weeks then tell them.dont be high and mighty just say.right I swappedthis and that,we all did fine so sorry I wasn't hiding just wanted to test different things to help us all you included to see if you coud manage.
then ask if you can carry on.

flour
eggs

MuchAdoAboutItAll · 25/02/2017 01:19

I buy Tesco's mouthwash which may well taste different to Listerine but it is the same colour so no one in my house has complained/noticed even though it's in the bottle I bought it in. I'm feeling a bit uneasy now Sudocreamface Shock Grin

I agree with Lynnm63 that Aldi's Magnum washing up liquid is brilliant. My mum picks one up for me whenever she's in there so mine is actually free!!

My best find has been Tesco's Treacle Moon bath/shower products which are cheapy versions of Philosophy ones. The vanilla flavour and the gentle powder love (pink) ones smell good. 500ml bottles for £3 and they are frequently on offer as well.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 25/02/2017 01:46

Have a look on eBay for companies that bulk sell cleaning products.

We do a box for service users with washing powder and stuff in we buy it in 10kg sacks and stuff like colour catchers loose by the 1000 or washing up liquid in 5 litre bottles, and put it into reusable containers
You may not need it at the same volumes but it's very inexpensive but decemt stuff

Solo · 25/02/2017 01:55

Use colour catchers more than once. I use mine until they are dark in colour.

Mouthwash; my dentist asked if I was using a particular mouthwash as I had some brown stains. I don't use it, but he said that that particular one causes staining. It's erm..Corsodyl!

CrazyCavalierLady · 25/02/2017 02:03

I did this years ago. There are only a handful of brand name products I ever buy and I wait until they are on sale. Deodorant, shampoo/conditioner, laundry stain remover, milk and dog food

BikeRunSki · 25/02/2017 07:15

In soft water areas, the very cheap basics type dishwasher tablets actually work better than the complicated 5-in-1type tablets..

omnishamblesssssssssssssss · 25/02/2017 08:04

I seem to have accidentally trained my kids up since birth. Never stuck to one brand. We all look at price/weight when buying. Although we tend to buy organic food or grow our own.

ememem84 · 25/02/2017 08:07

We have tried non branded pretty much everything.

I buy all our toiletries in boots. Because I get points and vouchers and can then use these for replacements. Yesterday I bought two giant things of listerine 4 oral b pro expert toothpastes (usually £5.30 each but 2 for £5). If you only buy when deals are on it makes more sense.

ememem84 · 25/02/2017 08:07

We also buy coop own washing powder. Fabric softener etc.

Cleaning products aren't bothered by a brand as long as it cleans.
