...and AIBU to do this?

We are on an economy drive. Already we are pretty good but I know we can get better still!

I want to refill the containers with similar but cheaper product - family won't notice, but will piss and moan if the bottle is different. I want to keep morale up.

E.g:

Listerine sensitive clean mint
Laundry powder
Dove men shower creme
Aquafresh kids mouthwash
Fairy liquid

I do this in the bathroom. DSDs have inherited their DMs adamant stance that only expensive brands of shampoo/conditioner/shower gel etc work on their "special" hair and skin. They are often overheard commenting about how lovely their conditioner makes their hair - not bad for Aldi Herbals at less than a quid a bottle!

OpalFruitsMarathonsandSpira · 25/02/2017 11:54

"special" hair and skin.

Yy

DH has special teeth! Wink

Butterfly I have a foaming face wash - I'll refill it with handwash after. That will be nice for the kids too actually, easier to lather up.

Aldi chocolate is BETTER BETTER BETTER than the big brands, especially that vile Kraft Mondilez Cadbury stuff that is sticky with palm oil.

OpalFruitsMarathonsandSpira · 25/02/2017 16:50

Just saved £5.06 in Lidl (£24.92) compared to Asda. (£29.98). If you scale that up for the full week or even the year that is significant savings.

B&M often sell these items much cheaper than supermarkets so try those and bulk buy if you see a good offer.

I bulk buy shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, toothpaste. Mouthwash & bio laundry detergent lasts ages in our house so I would probably buy two of each if I saw a good deal.

GoodDayToYou · 25/02/2017 17:05

I can happily recommend mixing laundry powder with soda crystals. Tbh, I prefer it as many brands smell too strong and have too much crap in. I doubt anyone would notice.

GeorgeTheHamster · 25/02/2017 17:12

I didn't know mouthwash was a waste of money. But Listerine is much cheaper in the cheap shops than the supermarkets.

OpalFruitsMarathonsandSpira · 25/02/2017 17:23

GeorgeTheHamster me neither. I'm going to ask my dentist to gently suggest this to DH.

I don't use it, but I'd be fairly fucked off if he told me I couldn't use, say, deodorant because a few people online told him so! Grin

Lidls ketchup is much better than Heinz and also have more tomatoes per 100grams than Heinz one.

Stick with Fairy washing up liquid (the original one - better than Platinium), but only buy it when on offer and bigger bottle.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 25/02/2017 17:29

As a dentist I'd say ditch the mouthwash completely.

OverthinkingSpartacus · 25/02/2017 17:53

Poundland can be great for branded products.

I pop in there to browse toiletries and make up before going to boots etc.
The cosmetic section you need a little bit of time to filter through the displays, but I think it's worth it for the saving. I never used to look in Poundland much as I assume it would be junk (there is some of that tbf)

I'd popped in once to grab paper plates and saw a nail polish id just paid six quid for in boots..

Bought a lovely tinted Burts Bees lip balm in there last week.

OP, see the teeth here --->Grin ? Well, MrsMorton knows exactly what she's talking about! wink wink

Gingernaut · 26/02/2017 01:50

I have used the Aldi 'premium' washing up liquid and it was awful.

I like to leave thing to soak with a little squirt of liquid and the Aldi shite just didn't dissolve.

I'd come back hours later and find a little blob of green still sitting at the bottom of whatever it was I was going to wash.

When I washed up it was very hard to rinse off and I live in a hard water area, where detegents have a hard time soaking.

Gingernaut · 26/02/2017 01:51

Where detergents have a hard time FOAMING. Sorry.

countrygirl55 · 26/02/2017 07:51

Huge vote for Morning Fresh washing up liquid (can get a massive bottle in Poundland). Best on glasses by a country mile imo.

presidentfart · 26/02/2017 09:04

It's dentists giving you advice on not using mouthwash though 😀

NoArmaniNoPunani · 26/02/2017 09:23

Especially listerine, full of alcohol and causes erosion and staining. What possible benefit could it have?

OpalFruitsMarathonsandSpira · 26/02/2017 10:17

Solo I don't understand that post, sorry.

President fart. Meh it's people on the internet claiming they are dentists. They can alert me to find out more, but I don't take anything I read online as fact without further research. It sounds very viable.

As I said up thread I'll speak to my actual dentist, the one with certification on her wall.

Solo · 26/02/2017 13:47

MrsMorton is a dentist!

Solo · 26/02/2017 13:49

But I can see that it's no good telling you that.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 26/02/2017 14:24

Why would anyone pretend to be a dentist online? We are one of the most hated professions! If I was going to choose a fake job I'd pick something glamorous

Agerbilatemycardigan · 26/02/2017 15:11

I know this is off topic, but have just read the post about mouthwash and wanted to wade in with my tuppence worth. I've seen my dentist and my hygienist this week, and both of them told me not to use mouthwash, and that it's not only a waste of money, but can also damage teeth with long term use.
