Not to tell DH how to cook the gyoza?

KellyBoo800 · 24/02/2017 20:30

DH is cooking dinner (I cook most nights, chores are evenly split so it's not about pulling his weight or anything). We had some frozen gyoza in the freezer that he fancied.

He's just called me into the kitchen to ask me how to cook them. I told him to read the instructions on the packet, but he said they don't make sense. I have cooked them once before, a few weeks ago, and just followed the instructions. Apparently that means that I should know how to cook them now and tell him so he doesn't have to try to understand the instructions.

Problem is I don't remember exactly how to do them with the timings so he is literally expecting me to stand next to him and read him the instructions and tell him exactly what to do. Apparently I'm being difficult because I told him to figure it out.

I know it sounds petty but I just hate the expectation that even on my night off from cooking I need to stand there and help him do it. He is more than capable of following a set of instructions himself. For what it's worth they are as simple as "fry in a little bit of oil for this amount of time, then add whatever amount of water the instructions say, and then add a lid and let them steam for another period of time". I have been looking after my DSD since 3pm and my 10 month old niece all day, I just want to sit down with a glass of wine ffs!!

PS I realise this is a small problem and hasn't triggered an actual argument. It just bothered me because no one stands there and reads the instructions for me when I cook something new!

Surely microwave ones just go soggy? Shallow fried then steamed gives you that lovely crispy edge and soft shell.

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 24/02/2017 21:02

Kill him and turn him into gyoza. It's the only way

KellyBoo800 · 24/02/2017 21:03

I love this thread. A bit of polite lip service has been paid to the AIBU but a sturdy 85% of the posts are basically either asking what gyoza are or saying how freaking awesome they are. You're a good 'un, OP.

I'm just happy to be bringing joy and gyoza to people's Friday nights WinkGrin

Every single time my exDH did anything in the kitchen I was called in to "help" - every fucking time. I'd have to make the gravy or stir a pot, or the favourite "is this done enough for you?", because sitting opposite me at the table for 18 years wasn't enough information about how I like my food done. Even when we split up he lived abroad he facetimed me to ask me how to make a lasagna, because I make it the best, apparently. Note, I'm a decent cook but in no way world-beating.

Eaatpoint I attempted my own once...the wrappers were quite easy to make by hand but I could get the flavouring quite right and I could get a nice neat parcel. Very traumatising.

Couldn't. Obviously meant couldn't.

too busy scoffing all the gyoza to pay attention to spelling

M&S ones are shit. Best ones that I have found are Costco frozen ones.

Fruitcocktail6 · 24/02/2017 21:18

Sapporo is going strong, we go there all the time! A hidden gem in catford

Ohyesiam · 24/02/2017 21:18

My oh can be like this. Some days he doesn't even seen to be able to pit something in a bag without someone holding the bag open, ffs.....
I think it's about wanting to be witnessed doing things.

harderandharder2breathe · 24/02/2017 21:19

Yanbu

It's not hard to read a packet. If it doesn't make sense you read it again. And then just muddle through and try not to poison anyone.

I hate drippy people like this that can't do such a simple thing without someone standing next to them telling them what to do

TatianaLarina · 24/02/2017 21:20

Prawn gyoza at Hare and Tortoise are great.

Hassled · 24/02/2017 21:23

Chinese supermarkets sell them. Lots of them. They're probably not Wagamama quality but they're damned good. Actually they may be dumplings rather than gyoza but similar sort of thing. I have an insane amount in my freezer and it's my current "can't be arsed to cook" meal of choice.

OuchBollocks · 24/02/2017 21:27

Fantastic Fruitcocktail6! I used to live in Catford, it was my favourite place, it looks so uninspiring tucked away with all the fried chicken and pie and mash shops but it was so good. Delighted to hear it's going strong :)

Cwtchythings · 24/02/2017 21:29

I didn't know Ocado has gyoza! Next online shop they will be in my basket!

OP my DH run out of the kitchen calling for me last week because the washing machine was beeping. Turned out he had put a wash on and not closed the door properly. Why he couldn't work that out without my help I have no idea.

plominoagain · 24/02/2017 21:36

I love the Morrisons gyoza that they tend to hide at the end of the freezer aisle next to the pizza section ! I only noticed them about a month ago , but they're turning into a bit of a late night habit .

They also do some mean pierogi as well .

Elledouble · 24/02/2017 21:43

Ohhhhh. Gyoza. I need them now.

My partner occasionally says (once I've started cooking) "...oh I was thinking I might cook something..."

I've told him just to tell me if he's going to cook, and then to get the fuck on with it. But he'd need me to stand next to him and tell me how to do things, so actually it's less bother to do it myself. We've been together six and a half years, I think I can still count the number of dinners he's cooked me on my fingers.

KermitRuffinsTrumpet · 24/02/2017 21:45

I make my own, I even make the dough. Easy enough but not quick. Dead tasty though

RB68 · 24/02/2017 21:50

ahhh he can't be bothered with glasses or is in denial...

winewolfhowls · 24/02/2017 21:52

I could easily eat nine gyoza they are amazing. Dunno what pierogi is though.

glueandstick · 24/02/2017 21:55

Waitrose do prawn gyoza. They are delish (and microwavable).

winewolfhowls · 24/02/2017 21:57

Asda don't do gyoza on the online shopping the utter bastards

Itsmytemporaryname · 24/02/2017 21:57

Can everyone stop saying the word gyoza now.

SealSong · 24/02/2017 22:03

So pleased to be reminded by this thread that I have a pack of prawn and vegetable Chinese dumplings in the freezer (very similar to gyoza). That's lunch tomorrow sorted.

mainlywingingit · 24/02/2017 22:04
