I'd go but would understand others reasons not. If China were a dragon the Shanghai is the head (with Beijing its heart.)
.. a few good Shanghai ideas so thought I'd share, list not exhaustible... If you imagine Shanghai similar to London but, where London is divided into North and South of the water, Shanghai is divided East and West of the water (River Pu.) The East is more modern in architectural style.
Linky things may not work. 'Cause of the Great Firewall of China, download Google Translate China before entering then it'll work. A good free VPN is the Puffin app.
Shanghai Science and Technology Museum
SSTM is excellent. There's an interactive area for smaller children but the place is generally excellent. Underneath, beside Metro, is a huge knock off market.

Huang pu river by Ferry
There are scheduled ferryboats between East Jinling Road Ferry Dock / The Bund in Puxi and Dongchang Road Ferry Dock in Pudong. The ferry ticket costs CNY 2 (20p.) Walk toward Huangpu River from East Nanjing Road and turn right to walk down along the Bund, East Jinling Road Ferry Dock can be seen soon. Dongchang Road Ferry Dock is about 10-15 minutes' walk south of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower/ Superbrand Mall (Din Tai Fung.)

Din Tai Fung
Personally cannot beat Din Tai Fung on the third floor of Super Brand Mall (by the Pearl Tower) as the food's yum and the views looking-over the Bund are fantastic!
