Been offline for a few days and I’m catching up on stuff. I was really surprised to see the amount of comments on this post - some really good points made.
Ghostyslovesheets; I think that golliwogs belong in museums too. I don’t think they should be ablated from our history as that could mean losing the lessons learned - so museums make sense.
Sunshinesupermum; “Don't put adult symbolism onto children by banning the make and sale of gollies. Children don't see any difference between black and white skin unless parents illustrate it.”
Although I agree with the second sentence above, I think that like it or not adults introduce racism at some stage (directly or indirectly via other children), and at some stage the child becomes aware of the racial connotations.
MrsDustyBusty; I wasn’t calling for a ban personally, it was from a Facebook video I spotted – I posted the link on my first post, but you don’t really need to watch the video to get the general idea.
LassWiTheDelicateAir; no.
Justnowords; I don’t think golliwogs are at the root of the problem either, but they’re a tool. They’re a method of perpetrating racism. i.e. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga being called a golliwog. As an adult, I’m sure he was able to brush that sort of thing off, but the very same thing happens in the playground …and that can have a negative impact on children, who after all are evolving and developing their fragile personalities.
Banning golliwogs? Ok, I accept that might not be ideal …but there are people out there who will keep using them as negative tools, and if you ban them they will eventually become less relevant, and less effective as a tool of racism. Maybe think of it this way; the government has taken steps to prevent secondary smoke inhalation by banning smoking in hospitals for example. The idea being that the smoking doesn't impact negatively on others (including those who choose not to smoke). While some people don't find golliwogs offensive, plenty of other people do, so it's about protecting their rights ...AND before anyone points out that smoking is a health issue, let's keep in mind that bullying and racism can have a negative effect on mental health.
