Banning golliwogs?

After watching a C4 programme on "PC gone mad" last night, I spotted a link to a Facebook video - see link below which gives 3 key reasons. Not sure how I feel about actually banning golliwogs (as that's censorship), but they do seem to bring out the worst in some factions of our society.

Justnowords Of course it's not in the same ballpark, but an acceptance of something small moves the parameters again until it becomes uncontrolled.

Thank you for clearing it up, and apologies. Flowers

Ah MumzyPops. You clearly don't remember what you posted or are confused. You did not insist OP tell the teacher, you argued the opposite.

Actually the OP did know who said the word. And another poster said children had been excluded for racist abuse, not expelled. So you were wrong, actually.

As I said, it must be lovely living in your head, where you get to twist the facts to suit yourself.

I was on that thread too, mumzy. You clearly said that you knew of cases where children had been expelled for a single use of the N word. Which is patently untrue- as you later acknowledged. There are circumstances where a child could be excluded.....

Been offline for a few days and I’m catching up on stuff. I was really surprised to see the amount of comments on this post - some really good points made.

Ghostyslovesheets; I think that golliwogs belong in museums too. I don’t think they should be ablated from our history as that could mean losing the lessons learned - so museums make sense.

Sunshinesupermum; “Don't put adult symbolism onto children by banning the make and sale of gollies. Children don't see any difference between black and white skin unless parents illustrate it.”

Although I agree with the second sentence above, I think that like it or not adults introduce racism at some stage (directly or indirectly via other children), and at some stage the child becomes aware of the racial connotations.

MrsDustyBusty; I wasn’t calling for a ban personally, it was from a Facebook video I spotted – I posted the link on my first post, but you don’t really need to watch the video to get the general idea.

LassWiTheDelicateAir; no.

Justnowords; I don’t think golliwogs are at the root of the problem either, but they’re a tool. They’re a method of perpetrating racism. i.e. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga being called a golliwog. As an adult, I’m sure he was able to brush that sort of thing off, but the very same thing happens in the playground …and that can have a negative impact on children, who after all are evolving and developing their fragile personalities.

Banning golliwogs? Ok, I accept that might not be ideal …but there are people out there who will keep using them as negative tools, and if you ban them they will eventually become less relevant, and less effective as a tool of racism. Maybe think of it this way; the government has taken steps to prevent secondary smoke inhalation by banning smoking in hospitals for example. The idea being that the smoking doesn't impact negatively on others (including those who choose not to smoke). While some people don't find golliwogs offensive, plenty of other people do, so it's about protecting their rights ...AND before anyone points out that smoking is a health issue, let's keep in mind that bullying and racism can have a negative effect on mental health.

Hmmm. My granny has one which belonged to my grandad as a child, and then my dad as a child, and is now still in her house with the photo albums etc. It's very, very old. She thinks it's racist and keeps it out of sight but doesn't want to throw it away as it's so old and was actually my dad's favourite toy as a child Confused I've thought about this before - if it's left behind when she passes away, what would I do with it? On the one hand I too would be really reluctant to part with an old toy that was cherished by two generations of my family and which is almost 100 years old. On the other hand, I'd be mortified if anyone saw it and thought I was one of those weirdos who collected old racist paraphanelia or something. Why can't they have had a cherished teddy bear instead?

Okay, so in 2008 a group of us moved to Amsterdam. In November these posters started to appear in town with horrible golliwogs on them and we all thought they were advertising a right wing, racist campaign. And we got really upset. Then we find out it was the Sint Nikolaas celebration. The Zwaarte Piets. Nobody born after 1970 can claim that these caricatures are not racist. It's been recognised and we know it and we hate it.

I think a case can be made that golliwogs shouldn't be sold in stores.

That said, I think if a child innocently brings to school a golliwog that his/her Grandma made, it would be extremely unreasonable to throw the toy away and tell the child that that's a racist object and they aren't allowed to have one.
