Why people think it's funny to let a baby chew/suck on a slice of lemon and video them crying after it?
Seen things like this shared on facebook for a while now and I just don't get it - seems quite cruel actually.

A friend of mine did it.
She also weaned her baby at 12 weeks old so I kept my mouth firmly shut
Makes me think though - if I sucked all the juice out of a lemon wedge like her baby did, I would have a belly ache and probably annoy very nice poo the following day hate to think what that does to a 4 month old's digestive system

My nice loved sucking on lemons as a baby. But giving them to babies that cry afterwards in cruel.

Why on earth would you have a belly ache from 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice? That is not normal. (on average, 1 lemon = 2 tablespoons, assuming a wedge is 1/4 a lemon)

Because neat lemon juice is so acidic I have quite a sensitive tummy (IBS), so do babies!

What sort of nasty fucker does that to their child?

I wouldn't think it was funny if they were crying but babies do make a funny face when they taste something sour.

I wouldn't be that upset about someone doing or filming it especially if the baby wasn't upset. It doesn't hurt the baby. It is quite funny when they taste it, make a face and then go back for more. But I quite like lemons so perhaps I have a weird opinion of it.

OTOH when DH fed DS a hot pepper "as a joke" I lost my shit at him because that's horrible. He hadn't realised how hot it was (should have tasted it himself first) but even so.

I've always thought the advice for citrus fruits is to wait until they are at least 10-12 months. Some of these babies are maybe 4/6 months.

To clarify not my friends babies - these stupid videos that appear in your time line from time to time for some odd reason with loads of ppl commenting underneath how hilarious is it.

No current advice to wait on citrus. But yes I think I'd wait until they were a bit older and more confident at eating, you wouldn't want to put them off trying new things!

About the weaning at 12 weeks thing. When I had my DD (more than 20 years ago) I think the advice was 12 weeks. Or 16. I can't remember exactly now. Certainly a lot less than the 6 months now recommended. So maybe she just listened to her Mum rather than the HV?

It's not the trying of new things that's cruel - it's the deliberately feeding a baby something that will make it cry, videoing it and sharing it for 'laughs'

I doubt Chinese babies eat what passes as Chinese food in the U.K. to be honest. It's full of salt and god knows what else.

DN loved lemons - you won't know if they'll cry unless you try - the sharing is a sign of the times isn't it?

It was still happening - only you didn't know about it - so wasn't an issue

Honestly, I've never seen one where the baby cries. I've seen them where they screw up their face and that's funny, and cute.

12 weeks was standard HV advice to wean 20-25 years ago when I had my older children.

My little boy grabbed a lemon slice at about 7 months. Straight in the mouth and he loved it. At 4 he will still go for the lemon slice in your drink if you look the other way

Haven;t you ever had a tequila shot? Or basically anything with lemon juice in? It's a teaspoon full of juice!

Babies actually have quite insensitive tastebuds, lots of them will happy suck a lemon

I really don't see the issue as long as they're old enough. My DS grabbed one from my drink in a family pub at 10 months. His face was picture, got a laugh from us all and he'd forgotten 15 seconds later.

He was about five Dear!

Although to be fair he is 8 now and DH brought home a joke pen from work which gives you a slight electric shock when you press the end and DS thought this was hilarious and wouldn't stop playing with it

Oh I thought he was a baby!

I bet he loved the joke pen, just watch he doesn't slip it in his school bag to trick his teacher with!!
