To actually wear one of these...

So, against the advice of a few MNers (and arguably my better judgement), I went and bought a "trendy" modern-ish rain bonnet (one of these - www.instagram.com/thebonnit/?hl=en). Got it in the post on Friday and now summoning up the courage to wear it if it rains on my way into work.

While this may have worked for Rihanna, still kind of wondering if I can carry it off on the tube, so in a complete abdication of responsibility, thought I'd let Mumsnet decide...

They actually look really cute on all the women in the photos on Instagram! But I just know that on me it would just look, well, not like that at all. Hopefully you look more like the people who can carry it off than like the people who can't carry it off! Because it does look useful...

Ilovetorrentialrain · 20/02/2017 21:20

Hmm I definitely wouldn't as it looks in no way modern. However it's very practical so I wish these did look acceptable - no umbrella needed - but still just no.

Likewise these:

So practical and I secretly wish they were OK!

To actually wear one of these...
SurferRona · 20/02/2017 21:22

Someone (early 30s?) on the train platform this morning had one of these on. No idea this was 'a thing'. Not a good look I'm afraid! (It wasn't actually raining either....) OP why on earth don't you just get a mini ultralight brolly? Flat ones fit in coat pockets if you don't use a bag Confused

70ontheinside · 20/02/2017 21:22

Thanks, those instagram pics made me snort lol!

If you are indeed some kind of lady hipster, go ahead. Otherwise I'd stick with the old umbrella.

MyBeloved · 20/02/2017 21:23

Just no.

Well, not until I get my free bus pass and prescriptions anyway Grin

mycatwantstokillme1 · 20/02/2017 21:24

ooh a mac hat! my nan doesn't leave the house without one (she's 91, but has had them for as long as i can remember and I'm 44)

Just do it! Nothing wrong with a good old mac hat Smile

semanwen · 20/02/2017 21:31

They sell them for about 50p in old style hardware shops (and my local post office)

BestZebbie · 20/02/2017 21:32

I notice that very few of the ladies in the instagram are wearing coats to go with their rain hats! I think the look might be different when you are soaking wet and buttoned up, rather than getting ready to weld a spitfire together with avocados :-)

Ilovetorrentialrain when I went to Venice a couple of years ago, all the super stylish Italian ladies above the age of about 40 had one of those shopping trollies, all in lovely colours and funky looking. It hasn't caught on here yet, but it's only a matter of time...

This type of thing:

user1473256244 · 20/02/2017 21:42

Ha ha yes! I wear an anorak without shame on a rainy day, so why not!

CthulhusMum · 20/02/2017 21:45

I carry one in my handbag, if it rains my bright hair dye can run, not terribly trendy but who cares.

NuffSaidSam · 20/02/2017 21:46

In London no-one will look twice! People wear all kinds of crazy stuff, no-one bats an eyelid. It's one of the great joys of living in London imo.

Chippednailvarnishing · 20/02/2017 21:50

What you need OP is this new fangled invention called an umbrella, I'll see if I can source a picture for you.

Ahhh the shopping trolley, my childhood was spent in Kilburn with my Mum dragging me and the fecking shopping trolley home. Poor Mum

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 20/02/2017 21:52

Haha. Sorry OP but you've just reminded me of one of my favourite videos ever.

F1GI · 20/02/2017 22:01

peronslly i'd go with a coat with a hood
but yanbu to wear that if you want

AliceBanned · 20/02/2017 22:03

I remember my gran making me wear one in the 1970s when I was in my early teens - she would really insist if I was out with her in the village and it started to rain. I was utterly mortified and dreaded bumping into any of my school friends! Traumatised for years! Shock Grin

AliceBanned · 20/02/2017 22:09

I love how on the Bonnit website, they've got someone wearing one sitting in her sexy underwear! Grin

Ilovetorrentialrain · 20/02/2017 22:10

Foureyesarebetter they just make perfect sense. Somehow I seem to think lugging four heavy carrier bags is a better look. Love the idea fashionable Italians are using trollies. There is hope.

alpacawhacker · 20/02/2017 22:12

As a small child I had a mackintosh and sou'wester which I remember with great fondness, perhaps I should revive that look! Grin

I'd look like a crazy bag lady with one of those rain hoods on though.

DramaAlpaca · 20/02/2017 22:13

That hideous item reminds me of my lovely grandmother. She'd always have one with her to wear in the rain, and when we were out for a walk & it started to rain she'd produce a couple of spare ones & make me & my brother wear them too. The shame.

wonderingsoul · 20/02/2017 22:14

My dp brought me one once

We was on a make or break wrakend away after talkimg about splitimg up.

We went away to the beach for the night
Id told him i had permed my hair a few days before so he brought me one just incase it rained cis he had heard you couldnt wash your hair for a while.

I wore it because it was utterly randomly thoughtfull

paxillin · 20/02/2017 22:23

Looks great with cherry red lipstick, sunglasses and a petticoat. Otherwise as attractive as varicose vein stockings. But your hair will stay dry and look great afterwards.

Oldraver · 20/02/2017 22:25

Foureyesarebetter...My Mum lived in Spain and the last time I went there 6 odd years ago everyone had a shopping trolley. Even the young men, I was quite taken aback

One day on the beach someone waltzed off the beach with a trolley that held all the chairs, brollies etc and I saw lots of people watching. I swear the whole beach had trolley envy

unfortunateevents · 20/02/2017 22:28

No, just no. There is nothing modern about that. What is wrong with an umbrella or a coat with a hood?

Shallishanti · 20/02/2017 22:32

Foureyes can you really not get those trolleys where you are? I went to buy one for my mum and was overwhelmed by choice!
As for the hoods....was definitely an old lady look 30 years ago...I can't think of a situation in which either a hooded coat, an umbrella or a hat wouldn't be a better idea...and a better look. That said, getting wet isn't really usually such a disaster is it?
