To actually wear one of these...

So, against the advice of a few MNers (and arguably my better judgement), I went and bought a "trendy" modern-ish rain bonnet (one of these - www.instagram.com/thebonnit/?hl=en). Got it in the post on Friday and now summoning up the courage to wear it if it rains on my way into work.

While this may have worked for Rihanna, still kind of wondering if I can carry it off on the tube, so in a complete abdication of responsibility, thought I'd let Mumsnet decide...

Oh I love that. It would look crap on me but if you can pull it off then go for it.

Blankiefan · 20/02/2017 20:51

I have this. Does the same job. Looks equally as silly. You've got to own it really.

Crunchymum · 20/02/2017 20:52

As I've got specs it's not practical for me (unless there is zero wind) but fuck it, if it keeps you dry then go for it.

Catanddogmake6 · 20/02/2017 20:52

These were compulsory in the mid 1980s as part of our school uniform to put over our summer straw hats and winter velour hats when it rained. We looked very daft and old fashioned then and that was thirty years ago. Just need some nice sensible, flat brown laced up shoes to go with it. Having said that they are probably due a revival ...

steff13 · 20/02/2017 20:52

Here only elderly ladies wear them. Or, plastic grocery bags if they're caught out without one.

NotYoda · 20/02/2017 20:53

Are you a lady hister? If so, do it! Make sure you accessorise with 50's fashion, red lippie and tattoos.

NotYoda · 20/02/2017 20:53

hipster, not hister

TheGirlWhoWasntThere · 20/02/2017 20:53

Of course you should wear it. They are incredibly practical . Wear it and look fabulous.

I've got several and I love them. One is even leopard print!

(I do and have for a long, long time dressed in vintage clothes (25+ years and I'm in my early 40's). And to be honest I've never cared a hoot what anyone else thinks. )

Closedenv · 20/02/2017 20:53

It's so sensible go ahead. why do people have to dress inappropriately and suffer for it yet be viewed as odd or not looking good if wearing anything that remotely fits the weather. Wish parasols would come back Grin

TowerRavenSeven · 20/02/2017 20:54

Well, my grandmother had ones like that she wore in her 80's and 90's!
I say stick with an umbrella!

TheGirlWhoWasntThere · 20/02/2017 20:55

B.T. W. Where I work we sell them in packs of 3 for £2.00!

AcrossthePond55 · 20/02/2017 20:56

See, I think it's absolutely 'function over form' and I'd wear it because I have the type of hair that frizzes and kinks at the littlest bit of moisture.

If a random bunch of people on the street think I look odd, well, fuck 'em. I'll look fabulous when I reach my destination.

TheFirstMrsDV · 20/02/2017 20:57

They are great.
But they are not trendy or modern. They are exactly the same as the ones the ladies who left my hair salon in 1982 used to wear :D

ArriettyClock1 · 20/02/2017 20:59

Is it to protect your weekly shampoo and set?

It's very ugly. Sorry.

I think they do a clever attachment on some coats. It's sort of attached at the back of the neck, and you can put it up over your hair any time it rains...

A 'hood', I think it's called...I find they work really well, and I don't look like I have a bag on my head ;-D

Spybot · 20/02/2017 21:04

I really hope these come back into fashion ! If I had one I'd probably wear it as I hate wearing attached hoods. I feel my vision is blocked.

In wish I could get a nice parasol here too. I live somewhere hot and on blistering days I sometimes take shade under a golf umbrella but it doesn't look very stylish

Purplepotatoe · 20/02/2017 21:04

Not sure I would, but how sensible is that! Will keep my eye out on the tube tomorrow!

cate16 · 20/02/2017 21:06

Anyone remember the really thin pleated plastic ones - used to get them in Christmas crackers ?
I'm thinking one of those would be really useful now :)

SuperDandy · 20/02/2017 21:07

Closedenv, I use parasols, and they are much admired and envied. You can get them online, and they are lovely. So very nice to have when there isn't enough shade about.

Italiangreyhound · 20/02/2017 21:08

Just go for it. But you need lots of make up and a fancy hair do to make it 'work' (IMHO).

SuperFlyHigh · 20/02/2017 21:09

I think the only ones I'd wear at a push are leopard like TheGirlWhoWasntThere or zebra print maybe, definitely not clear with the edging as sadly that does remind me of my elderly relatives (now sadly deceased).

I'm sure if you do the retro look though it can be carried off well.justnotbyme

SuperFlyHigh · 20/02/2017 21:12

Reasons the last raincoat I could wear with workwear was a Zara cheapie black raincoatwith a button on hood, it was really handy and i loved it (I'd not worn a smart raincoat with a hood before).

However I forgot that Zara stitching isn't that secure at the best of times and the buttons that secured the hood to the neck of the coat soon came off... It was handy whilst it lasted though!

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/02/2017 21:15

Why is everyone so frightened of a bit of rain.

Waiting for dd to come out of a meeting In watched a couple with a toddler stood in a doorway. The mum was having a screaming fit at the child because child wanted to walk and the mum kept telling them they would get wet and trying to force child back into buggy. It went on for a good 20 minutes and it really was only drizzling

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/02/2017 21:18

Personally op I wouldn't because I would think people on the tube might mistake me for an American tourist
