To think £26 is too much too take my son to the cinema!!! Odeon discount needed!

Feeling like swearing loudly, so posting here instead.

Have promised to take DS2 to see Lego Batman today (as his big brother went with a friend earlier in the week), but our local Odeon is charging £14.50 for me and £10.25 for him. It's too much!!! I don't even want to see the bloody film!!! There's a Cineworld within driving distance but it's only slightly cheaper and 10 times less pleasant (we can walk to the Odeon, along the river, which is the only bit of the trip I'm looking forward to).

I was banking on using my Tesco vouchers for a discount, but have logged in to find that my credit is zero - not because it really is zero, but because their dumb voucher system means all the "change" from previous vouchers (including the ones I used for DS1 and his friend) won't be re-credited until our next statement.

Does anyone know of any Odeon offers out there to help me out of this??? I've googled, but so far only finding out-of-date offers and adverts.

OP posts:

No helpful advice on the price OP but if it makes you feel better, the film is pretty funny enjoyable even for a grown up. I took my DS last week ( and paid £20 including a coffee and pick n mix at Vue ).

sparechange · 19/02/2017 10:32

Do you have to go today?
Do Orange still do the 2 for 1 Wednesday tickets?

lljkk · 19/02/2017 10:32

We spent £89 to take 6 people to that movie yesterday (imax version, which I suppose I appreciate in a way, at least 3D was something we can't get at home). Not in London, either. The theatre was probably less than 10% full, as you might guess. We should have planned better to find out about the budget options, but it was too late. Lesson learnt the hard way & tbh, it's too much hassle for me in future to have to spend hours researching all these options each time. The LegoBatman movie is crap for adults, btw. Reminded me of Episodes 5&6 of Star Wars.

I figured out DH could have got the cinema tickets for £7 less, but really, still stupid amount of money. I suppose we have decided now to have a forever more NO CINEMA policy, which the kids kind of get after yesterday. At least the popcorn+drinks was only £15.

Going out is just so expensive. We spent £60 for a sit-down meal later even though DH ate absolutely nothing & three of the kids ordered off the relatively good value kid menu. With some other bits, Spent About £200 for a relatively simple day out.

I'm 'down south' it's that much here too, same with Vue.

Nearest independant is 20 miles away in a grim little back street. Nothing else there. It's quite quaint, they sell a few packets of sweets & lukewarm drinks. It isn't the same experience for a child at all. We have been three times (to see films we missed at the big cinemas), each time there's only been one other family. I just looked - it's only £9.50 for two tickets today.

We occasionally go to the Kids Viewings on a Sunday which are cheap, but as the kids get older they want to see what their friends are seeing now, not old films.

We are fortunate to be able to afford to go, I know, but it's still a lot of money for what it is & we definitely don't go often as we would if it was more reasonably priced.

titchy · 19/02/2017 10:33

Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday and use Compare the market 2 for 1 code (happy to pm you one!).

DoIDareDisturbTheUniverse · 19/02/2017 10:35

Do you have to go today? If you can go on tues or weds I can pm you my meerkats 2 for 1 code as we rarely use ours

AnnieAnoniMouse · 19/02/2017 10:36

Starry. My nearest one is 30 miles away 🤣

I used to live near Oxted, the independant cinema there is lovely, I miss it.

girlsyearapart · 19/02/2017 10:37

If you know anyone with a taste card you can get half price tickets at cineworld.
Or get odeon codes off eBay which I have done before.
Also sometimes cheaper showings at the watermans in Brentford ( 65 goes direct from richmond)
I feel your pain - we pretty much only do the Saturday / Sunday kids club ones now.
It doesn't take long for the films to get on to the cheaper showings they have Moana and Trolls now which are fairly new?

MiladyThesaurus · 19/02/2017 10:37

Can you go to another cinema? Our local vue is much cheaper than the odeon.

Soubriquet · 19/02/2017 10:37

Yes if you go on a Tuesday I'm happy to give you a meerkat movie code!

Iamastonished · 19/02/2017 10:38

BikeRunSki I have just checked the Paramount before posting. Adults are £6.50 and children £5.50. All circle seats are £6.50. Prices at the Parkway in Barnsley are surprisingly cheaper than the Paramount.

I love that they always have an interval for ice creams and teas etc.

TheSconeOfStone · 19/02/2017 10:39

My DH had just taken the kids to see Lego Batman at the local Reel cinema. £6.20 for an adult. He likes it because it's an old cinema (architecture nerd). We live in Devon so have traded careers for cheaper cost of living.

RandomMess · 19/02/2017 10:40

Vue have very recently at long last reduced their standard prices, they have finally realised it is just too expensive otherwise!

We went to the kids showings regularly for years whereas now it's a huge treat.

Christmasnoooooooooooo · 19/02/2017 10:41

Again not good for today but if any one is disabled there is card you can for discount as well. The details are on the odd one website

LouBlue1507 · 19/02/2017 10:45

You can get a years worth of 2for1 cinema tickets with compare the market when you make a qualifying purchase. Valid on Tuesday's and Wednesday's. Not much use now but definitely worth it, Martin Lewis mentioned UK travel insurance for one day costs £2 and is a qualifying purchase. Will save my partner and I tens of pounds!

Chloe84 · 19/02/2017 10:45

Odeon have an offer, kids go free to see Lego Batman until 23 Feb

www.odeon.co.uk/offers-and-promotions/kids_go_free_to_legoland/435/

Chloe84 · 19/02/2017 10:46

Oh sorry they go to Legoland free Blush

SummerHouse · 19/02/2017 10:47

The Lego batman film is brilliant. Can you off set the cost? Pack ups instead of eating out etc. We pay similar in Lincoln. It really is a rip off. But you might love it.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 19/02/2017 10:51

Dear god that's expensive, here in sunny Dorset one adult and three kids for £11.60 which included an on line booking fee

geordiedench · 19/02/2017 10:53

Our local Odeons charge the same as the OP's. Makes a family outing to the cinema horrendously expensive. But we do always buy snacks and drinks at Wilkos instead of paying £8 for 3p worth of popped corn.

dingdongdigeridoo · 19/02/2017 10:53

Do you work for a large company? If you have access to one of those employee discount sites then they often give savings on cinema tickets. I get lots of discounts because I work for a huge company, but that's the only one I regularly use!

Squirmy65ghyg · 19/02/2017 10:54

My vue still shows a tenner for adults and 8. Quid for kids? Which is why we only do mini mornings. It's too much money.

frayedbuspass · 19/02/2017 11:02

Is there not a cheaper family ticket?

MaudOnceMore · 19/02/2017 11:03

Interestingly, our Odeon charges slightly less for adults and slightly more for children - also in London - so they're tweaking the prices even in the same locality.

At the very least, OP, get a Première Card, as you soon rack up enough points to get a free ticket.

BeMorePanda · 19/02/2017 11:06

I don't think you can get much cheaper than this is London.

This is why we pretty much only go to the cinema for the cheap early morning weekend sessions (where they show older films). Any time we go to a new film and pay full price it is a MAJOR event and costs me and 2 DC about £35 or more. And I take homemade popcorn. Luckily they don't seem to be that bothered.
