And for those who haven't yet seen it, here is SNL's Melissa McCarthy sketch. It bears more than one viewing, I think. 😀

merrymouse · 19/02/2017 15:08

How many people voted for Trump because they really supported him and how many people voted for Trump because they were either 'Never Hillarys', 'Always Republicans', protesting against established politicians or just vaguely thought it would be a laugh to have a reality TV star as president?

How many votes did Hillary lose because people wanted Bernie instead, couldn't be bothered to vote for her or were more inspired by a third party candidate? How many people didn't bother to vote because they didn't think Trump could win?

It's pretty difficult to imagine what the Trump administration will be like in 6 months, never mind in 4 years, but how far can Trump go just by preaching to the converted?

A lot has been made of the fact that Hillary took the rust belt for granted. However, if Trump has nothing to offer except a 4 year campaign, isn't he doing the same thing?

NotDavidTennant · 19/02/2017 15:18

This link to a poll was posted a few threads back.

The results suggest that the population break down into four groups:

Believers 22%
Conditional Supporters 22%
Opposed but Curious 21%
Resisters 35%

This suggest a lower limit of Trump support of 22% and upper limit of 65%.

Lweji · 19/02/2017 15:30

SNL is on a break. Until the 4th May. Sad

There's nothing on the weekend, is there? The nearest will be Monday's night shows, I suppose.

Destinysdaughter · 19/02/2017 15:30

Anyone heard anything about riots in Paris and France? It's on Twitter but don't know if it's fake news??

Roussette · 19/02/2017 15:32

I think we have to take comfort in the fact that whilst we are not going to turn his supporters against him and as you are all saying it will have to hit them in the pocket or be something really bad.... he is not going to increase his fanbase is he?

Surely there won't be anyone out there who was a Democrat thinking of being a Republican because of how marvellously he is doing. If anything non voters will be spurred on to voting given his awful division of people and uneasiness about Bannon, Russia etc.

He promised to open up all the coal mines on Saturday - that ain't gonna happen. Is the Wall going to happen? The new EO next week re the muslim ban, is that going to go through? He can promise all he likes, he can sign EOs till the cows come home but getting it through and passed is another matter and in 2018 there might hopefully be more Dems to block him. That's what made Obama's life difficult wasn't it? He couldn't do all he wanted. Let Fat Orange One experience that in 2018, that'll be wonderful.

I think people have bought into him because he's given them hope. As claig used to say "stick it to the establishment" but as less happens, as their lives aren't changed, the hope will fade.

Meanwhile I'm wishing him to get more ranty, more ridiculous, sign more stupid order that don't happen, hold more rallies where there were 20,000 last year and 2,000 this year... I want him to lose some control in what he says and does because there is still a smidgeon of safeguards in place and I want him to look stupid and ineffectual.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 19/02/2017 15:34

There was something on BBC News24 last night about protests in Paris (demos) after a young black man was anally raped with a police baton & hospitalised earlier this month. If I recall, the assault was during riots, but the current protests were largely peaceful. The man is being named only as "Théo" - may help you track some coverage down.

SanFranBear · 19/02/2017 15:35

John Oliver is on tonight I think, Lweji. It's repeated on Sky on Mondays but I expect you could track down a live stream somewhere.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 19/02/2017 15:37

I have a quite unhealthy crush going on with JO... I do like an intelligent man who makes me laugh. I know he's also confining my every bias but theres something about a Brit commenting on the US that just dies something for me Smile

Roussette · 19/02/2017 15:44

I can't get it 'not available in your country' it says. Shame, I think he might have done something for me too Grin

cozietoesie · 19/02/2017 15:49

Well it's taken me long enough to realise but it didn't hit me until last night.

He's channelling John Wayne isn't he? Wink

Lweji · 19/02/2017 15:53

Oh, goody. John Oliver.

Meanwhile, I found this: it's

Strangely up to date.

BiglyBadgers · 19/02/2017 15:58

Has anyone seen Angry Spice recently? I am starting to worry about him. He has gone awfully quiet since Trump started doing his own press conferences. Maybe he is locked in a cupboard somewhere

Rousette - it's normally re-shown on Sky Atlantic on Monday nights..

Roussette · 19/02/2017 16:23

Thanks Sanfran

cozietoesie · 19/02/2017 16:24

I stand corrected, Lweji. That Colbert piece might just be the one to stand alongside McCarthy's.

Lord they hated it. (The Administration.) Faces like lavatory cisterns almost every one. Smile

AcrossthePond55 · 19/02/2017 16:25

merrymouse I'd say that the vast majority of 'pro-Trumps' we know were 'single issue' voters. They didn't necessarily think he was 'good' but they voted for him because he supported their particular 'pet issue', whether it was anti-Muslim, pro-guns, or anti-choice. There are pretty much quotes from friends; 'I don't like the way he treats women, but he's anti-abortion so I'm voting for him', 'I think he's sort of an asshole, but he'll let me keep my guns', and when being told about his nefarious business dealings 'I don't care about any of that, he'll keep the Muslims out'. Already a few of them are having second thoughts about Trump's desire to really keep his promises. One has gone so far as to say "Holy shit, he's fucking crazy!". Well, yeah, we told you that a year ago!

And a big 'YES' to some not voting for Hillary because she wasn't Bernie, but I think the majority of those votes either went to third party candidates or they didn't vote at all. Most of the people I know who did that were young people (under 30). When it was pointed out to them that a vote NOT cast for Hillary was a vote FOR Trump (as none of the third party candidates had a chance in hell), I got a pouty "I don't care, I want to make my point".

Well, now we're paying the price.

cozietoesie · 19/02/2017 16:29

And meanwhile, China is just enjoying the sunshine on that 'ol river bank?

cozietoesie · 19/02/2017 16:31

Did you and yours escape the worst of the weather, Across?

BiglyBadgers · 19/02/2017 16:34

Good to see the media starting to get better at dealing with the random Fake News allegations from Trump supporters

haven't seen this brought up yet, but I found this interesting - Mattis distancing himself from Trump a bit??

SNL was a re-run last night; they will have so much to choose from for next week they must be reeling with all the possibilities.

AcrossthePond55 · 19/02/2017 16:39

Lots of rain and our drive was 'rutty', but we're fine. We don't live near a lake or river and our place is on a hill so no flooding worries for the house. We did keep an eye on our cellar, though. The last year like this (1997) we had to run a sump pump! There was standing water on our roads but the drainage ditches worked fine.

I don't think the current incoming storms are bringing in as much rain as they'd predicted. Looks like the worst of it is passing to the south of us. So Cal is really getting hammered!
